Project Overview3D Dolls House
Difficulty Level = Beginner
Sew your little one a large two story house or castle to play with and treasure forever. It has a handle for carrying and is closed together with buttons and tabs. It has dowels in the corners to help keep its shape. The front of the house opens out flat, creating a little play area to add a walkway and a pond. There are lots of furniture options to decorate inside. Create a traditional house with gable trims, window shutters and window box, or a castle with dragon, knight and fairy appliqued onto the sides. Pair it with a set of Felt Dolls for your little one to play with.
Each step of the house construction is quite simple and beginner friendly, however, be prepared that it is very long! The furniture is trickier. We’ve taken care to explain the furniture in beginner friendly terms, however, note that a beginner may find it easier to hand sew the furniture than attempt it on a machine. The whole sew is extremely satisfying! Anyone of any level can truly sew this, adding all kind of magical, unique touches of their own to make a one-of-a-kind family heirloom.
Our Facebook group is a great place to get help, share your tips and creations! We are a friendly bunch, and we love to help and see what you have made.
Please read the full instructions before getting started.
Wash, dry, and press your fabric before starting your project. A bit of prep now prevents shrinking and means your garment will stay the same size you made it.
Never leave a child or baby unattended or allow to sleep in a garment made from one of our patterns with ties, snaps, buttons, or anything they could remove, choke on, or get caught on. Always use caution if you are unsure. We love our patterns, but we love your bundles of joy more!

You will need a woven or non-stretch fabric for both the Main and Lining fabric. Cotton or quilting cotton are great options for the Doll House, OPTIONAL Side and Main Panels, and OPTIONAL Furniture.
TIP – If using a quilting cotton, cut the fabric on the bias (diagonally to grainline) to reduce fraying. The small amount of fraying that occurs adds charm to the Doll House. If you are using felt, you can cut at any angle, as it doesn’t fray.
OPTIONAL Castle, Knight, Fairy Princess, OR House – If you are adding these you will need a woven or non-stretch fabric. Cotton or quilting cotton, different textured vinyl are all great options.
OPTIONAL Vinyl – You can use color vinyl for parts of the Doll House. You will need a mixture of colors up to 0.5 yard per color or scraps for smaller pieces.

• NOTE – The yardage was calculated using 20-inch wide Peltex.
• Polyfil or Batting
• OPTIONAL Fusible Webbing – approximately 6 yards will be sufficient. If you are using Vinyl you will not need fusible webbing. If you are using a woven fabric, we recommend using fusible webbing.
• Hook and Loop tape (Velcro) – approximately 1 yard will be sufficient
• ⅜ inch wide Buttons x11 OR size 20 Snaps x11 for the Button Tabs. Alternatively, you can use hook and loop tape.
• OPTIONAL Quilt – you will need 1-inch single fold bias binding to finish the quilt. Approximately 1 ½ yards will be sufficient.
• ⅜ inch width Dowels – 6x 18 inches, 6x 20 inches, 2x 28 inches
• Thread to match
Tools needed are, sewing machine, pins, scissors, open toe foot, tape measure or ruler. You might find it easier to use a needle designed for thicker projects, rather than the standard needle size.
Printing Your PatternSettings
The pattern is a separate download. Choose either the US letter paper, A4 paper, or A0 paper. Print at 100%.
On the second page, you will find a 1-inch and a 3-inch square test box. Print this page first, on its own, and measure these squares.
Once you are happy that the test box is accurate, print the rest of the pattern pages.
Please follow this video for information and assistance on assembling this pattern.

File Types
We have included three to four file types for you to choose from. Please choose whichever you are more familiar with or works best with your cutting machine. For cut files of the smaller pieces for some of our patterns, like the Dolls House Quiet Book and Add-on, we do not include a PDF copy. All versions come with .SVG, .PNG, and .DXF.
You will start by downloading the files from your account. Open your software and choose the file type you’d like to work with.
Pattern Cut Files
When working with cut files to cut small pattern pieces, it is imperative that you make sure the file is the correct size prior to cutting. We have included a one-inch square box offset in each file. You should be able to move the square off to the side, so it isn’t cut with the rest of your file. For files that also have square pieces, please be sure to compare them to the cut chart in the original file instructions. We’d always prefer you double check than have something cut out that isn’t useable!
Other Cut Files
For all other cut files, you should resize to your project needs. Please do keep in mind the size of some of the features. Going very small may make it difficult to cut smaller fonts or finer details.
Media
As mentioned earlier, it is very important to choose the correct media to for your cut. There is a huge selection to choose from and it can be overwhelming. Be sure to use the materials suggested by your machine for the type of project you are completing.

If you have folded your fabric correctly the fold will be parallel to the two edges of the fabric that are finished. The raw edges (e.g. the ones you could pick at and threads would come off) will be at a right angle to your fold.

1 . Hand Stitching- Attaching ThreadSeam Allowance
1⁄2 inch seam allowance included (unless otherwise stated) – Top stitching 1⁄8 inch – Basting 1⁄4 inch
1.1Thread the needle and tie a knot in the end of the thread.
On the inside of one of the fabric pieces, put the needle through a tiny bit of fabric.
1.2Pull the thread almost all the way to the knot. Stop pulling, split the thread close to the knot creating a gap then slip the needle through the gap.
1.3Pull the thread taut. The thread should now be knotted to the fabric.
NOTE – Tying the thread to the fabric this way will prevent the knot from coming through the fabric as you stitch.
1.4Put the needle through to the right side or underside of the fabric depending on which side of the fabric the needle needs to be on for the next step.
2 . Hand Stitching- Backstitch2.0Backstitches are used for outlining or adding fine detail.
2.1Thread the needle with colored embroidery floss/thread and attach to the inside of the fabric pieces, following the ‘Attaching Thread’ directions in the Hand Stitching Instructions above.
Pull the needle to the right side of the fabric close to the raw edge, or at the point you want to start your stitches. Pull the thread to the right side.
2.2Push the needle down about ⅛ inch away, pulling the thread all the way through. This will create a small stitch.
2.3Push the needle back up about ⅛ inch away, pulling the thread all the way through, creating a gap from the first stitch.
2.4Push the needle back into the same hole as step 2.2, pulling the thread all the way through. This will close the gap and complete the first backstitch.
2.5Repeat steps 2.3 to 2.4 creating a length of backstitches as desired.
3 . Hand Stitching- Satin Stitch3.0Satin stitches are flat stitches used to fill in a shape with smooth straight stitches giving a satin-like look.
3.1Thread the needle with colored embroidery floss/thread and attach to the inside of the fabric piece, following the ‘Attaching Thread’ directions in the Hand Stitching Instructions above.
Pull the needle to the right side of the fabric at the point you want to start your stitches. Pull the thread to the right side.
3.2Stitch around the entire shape, following the ‘Backstitch’ directions above, creating an outline.
3.3Bring the needle to the right side of the fabric at the outer edge of the stitching done in step 3.2 near the middle of your shape.
3.4Move the needle across the shape, pushing the needle down through the fabric on the outside of the shape.
NOTE – A Satin Stitch can be stitched vertically or on an angle, stitching on an angle gives a different look to the stitches.
NOTE – As you form the stitches, make sure not to twist the strands so the strands stay flat.
3.5Bring the needle back to the right side next to the first stitch. Push the needle back down next to the first stich at the outer edge of the stitching from step 3.2.
TIP – The stitches should always begin on one side of the shape and end on the other side. Although it is tempting to save thread by starting the next stitch next to a completed stitch, this creates gaps instead of a solid satin look.
3.6Repeat steps 3.3 to 3.5 stitching along one side of the shape.
3.7Bring the needle back to the first stitch. Repeat steps 3.3 to 3.5 to complete the opposite side of the shape.
4 . Hand Stitching- Slipstitch4.0These stitches can be used to join two pieces together almost invisibly.
4.1Thread the needle with thread or colored embroidery floss/thread and attach to the inside of the fabric pieces, following the ‘Attaching Thread’ directions in the Hand Sewing Instructions above.
Directly across from the starting point, push the needle through the felt and then back down through the fold on the opposite seam to create a stitch that is between ⅛ – ¼ inch long. When the thread is pulled through, the stitch is concealed within the seam crease, this will be a horizontal stitch connecting the left and right sides of the opening.
4.2Repeat all the way around. To tighten the stitches, gently pull the thread. This will conceal the stitches in between the seams.
NOTE – The stitches have been left loose in this picture to show what the ladder stitch looks like. Pull the thread through and taut after each stitch.
0 . AppliqueSeam Allowance
1⁄2 inch seam allowance included (unless otherwise stated) – Top stitching 1⁄8 inch – Basting 1⁄4 inch
0.0There are many ways to appliqué. We are leaving the edges raw in this tutorial, and then stitching down. If you have a preferred method, please use this. Alternatively, there are four options below to choose from.
TIP – Use an open toe foot as it allows you to see where you are stitching.
1 . Straight Stitch Applique1.0This is the quickest and easiest method of appliqué. Use your machines default applique setting if it has one.
1.1Apply fusible webbing to the back of the fabric appliqué.
TIP – Use the manufacturer’s instructions for ironing in place. We would also suggest you place a pressing cloth between the fabric and your iron to protect your iron. Occasionally the glue used in the interfacing can leak out and can mark your iron. If you do not have a pressing cloth, a clean, thin tea towel or scrap of 100% cotton can suffice.
1.2Place the appliqué onto the fabric as desired. Press.
1.3Starting on a straight edge, align the edge of the fabric with the middle of the foot.
1.4Pull the bobbin thread to the top.
1.5Holding both threads taut, stitch along the edge of the appliqué using ⅛ inch seam allowance.
2 . Zigzag Stitch Applique2.0A narrow zig zag stitch is almost an invisible stitch that secures the edges of the applique. Choose a longer stitch length between 0.5 and 1.5, and a narrower stitch width between 0.7 and 1.5. Decide which stitch length you prefer and write them down.
2.1Apply fusible webbing to the back of the fabric applique.
2.2Place the applique onto the fabric as desired. Press.
2.3Starting on a straight edge, align the edge of the fabric with the middle of the foot.
2.4Pull the bobbin thread to the top.
2.5Holding both threads taut, stitch along the edge of the appliqué.
2.6The right swing of the needle will be on the background fabric just on the outside of the applique.
2.7On the left swing of the needle, the needle will land just inside of the appliqué.
2.8Repeat steps 2.5 to 2.7 around the appliqué.
TIP – When turning around the appliqué, the needle needs to be on the right swing and on the outside of the appliqué.
3 . Satin Stitch Applique3.0A satin stitch is a zig zag stitch that is close together, so you are unable to see the background fabric. If your machine has a satin stitch setting, select that setting. The ideal stitch settings are stitch length 0.2 to 0.5, and stitch width between 2.0 to 4.0. Decide which setting you prefer and write them down.
3.1Apply fusible webbing to the back of the fabric applique.
3.2Place the applique onto the fabric as desired. Press.
3.3Starting on a straight edge, align the edge of the fabric with the middle of the foot.
3.4Pull the bobbin thread to the top.
3.5Holding both threads taut, stitch along the edge of the appliqué.
3.6The right swing of the needle will be on the background fabric just on the outside of the applique.
3.7On the left swing of the needle, the needle will land as far inside of the applique as you’ve set the stitch width to be.
3.8Repeat steps 3.5 to 3.7 around the applique.
TIP – When turning around the applique or pivoting at a corner on an outside curve, the needle needs to be on the right swing and on the outside of the applique.
TIP – When turning or pivoting on an inside curve, the needle needs to be on the left swing and the inside of the applique.
4 . Blanket Stitch4.0The blanket stitch is a straight stitch with a perpendicular stitch along the side. If your machine has a blanket stitch setting, select that setting. Many machines have more than one blanket stitch options. The ideal stitch settings are stitch length 2.0 to 3.3 and stitch width between 2.0 to 3.6. Decide which setting you prefer and write them down.
4.1Apply fusible webbing to the back of the fabric applique.
4.2Place the applique onto the fabric as desired. Press.
4.3Starting on a straight edge, align the edge of the fabric with the middle of the foot.
4.4Pull the bobbin thread to the top.
4.5Holding both threads taut, stitch along the edge of the appliqué.
4.6The right swing of the needle will be on the background fabric just on the outside of the applique.
TIP – The goal is to have the outside, or right needle, “hug” the outer edge of the applique.
4.7On the left swing of the needle, the perpendicular stitch will land in the applique.
TIP – When you need to pivot the applique to stitch around a curve or pivot at a corner, the needle needs to be on the right swing on the outside of the applique. Don’t pivot while on the left swing, doing so will create a “v” stitch back to the outer edge of the applique rather than the desired straight blanket stitch.
4.8Repeat steps 4.5 to 4.7 around the applique.
0 . PreparationSeam Allowance
1⁄2 inch seam allowance included (unless otherwise stated) – Top stitching 1⁄8 inch – Basting 1⁄4 inch
0.1Pattern Markings
Transfer all pattern markings and notches to the fabric using a disappearing ink pen or tailor’s chalk. For the Dollies you will need to transfer all facial features and turning marks to one of two cut pieces.
0.2OPTIONAL Quilt: Bias Binding
If you are not using store bought binding, you will need to create double fold binding to bind the Quilt.
Follow this free DIY Bias Binding tutorial to create the bias binding.
0.3Fusible Webbing
Iron the fusible webbing onto each piece and cut them out. Set aside. Do not remove the paper backing yet, that will be done in a later step.
1 . Dowel Casings1.0NOTE – You will repeat this step later for other Dowel Strips (e.g. the ‘Middle Dowel Strips’). However, for now, do this for 1 of the 6 pieces labelled ‘Dowel Strip’ only.
1.1Fold a Dowel Strip to the wrong side by ½ inch at the short edge. Press.
1.2Fold again by ½ inch. Press.
1.3Topstitch using ⅛ inch seam allowance.
1.4Fold one long edge to the wrong side by ½ inch. Press.
1.5Lay a Side Wall Lining right side up. Place the Dowel Strip on top, right sides facing up, matching long raw edges and the short bottom unstitched edge of the Dowel Strip. Pin.
NOTE – The stitched short edge should sit approximately ¾ inch below the corner where the Side Wall slants for the Roof.
NOTE – You will attach a Dowel Strip to each long edge of both Side Wall Linings.
1.6Stitch ONLY along the long folded edge using a ⅛ inch seam allowance.
1.7Baste the long raw edge of the Dowel Strip to the Side Wall Lining using a ¼ inch seam allowance.
TIP – Basting is just like normal stitching except the stitches need to be long and loose so that they can be removed later, if needed. Stitch within the seam allowance, so that the basting stitches are not seen in the final Doll House, while keeping the stitches loose enough to pull out just in case they are visible. The purpose is to hold a piece of fabric in place until that section is properly sewn. Set the machine to a long loose stitch. Test it on a piece of fabric first to make sure that the stitches can easily be removed. Do not backstitch at either end. Leave the ends loose, with approximately 1 inch of thread tails at either end of the stitching.
1.8Repeat steps 1.1 to 1.7 to attach a second Dowel Strip to the other side of the Side Wall Lining.
1.9Repeat steps 1.1 to 1.8 to attach a Dowel Strip to either side of the second Side Wall Lining.
1.10Repeat steps 1.1 to 1.3 with a Middle Dowel Strip.
Fold each long edge to the wrong side by ½ inch. Press.
1.11Lay a Side Wall Lining right side up.
Find and mark the center of the Side Wall Lining and the Middle Dowel Strip. Place the Middle Dowel Strip onto the Side Wall Lining, matching centers, and bottom edges. Pin.
NOTE – The top stitched edge should sit approximately 2 ½ inches below the pointed top of the Side Wall Lining.
1.12Stitch along the folded edges, using a ⅛ inch seam allowance.
1.13Measure a little more than halfway up the long side of the Side Wall. Align the loop tape with the stitched edge of the Dowel Strip, then continue laying it horizontally across the Side Wall. Pin in place.
Stitch in place, but DO NOT stitch on the Dowel Strips.
1.14Repeat steps 1.10 to 1.13 for the second Side Wall.
NOTE – The Loop Tape on this Side Wall will mirror the other Side Wall.
1.15Next you will attach your last two Dowel Strips to either side of one Wall/Floor piece. The Wall/Floor piece is the one that will fold out flat so if you have cut them from different colors, select the piece that will be the front Floor outside the house when the House is open. You will add the optional walkway to this piece later.
Repeat steps 1.1 to 1.8, stitching the Dowel Strips onto both shorter edges.
NOTE – The opening of the Dowel Strip should be facing the same direction for both pieces. As the
pieces are assembled, the opening should be facing away from the house.1.16Repeat steps 1.1 to 1.8 stitching the Second Floor Dowel Strip onto one long edge of the Second Floor Lining piece. If you have cut the Second Floor and Second Floor Lining pieces from different colors, this is the lining side that will be facing downwards in the finished dolls house (e.g., it will be the ceiling of the bottom floor).
1.17Repeat steps 1.1 to 1.8 stitching the Second Floor Dowel Strip onto the second long edge.
NOTE – The opening of the Dowel Strip should be facing the same direction for both pieces.
1.18Repeat steps 1.1 to 1.8 stitching a Roof Dowel Strip onto a long edge of the Roof Lining.
1.19Repeat steps 1.1 to 1.8 stitching the second Roof Dowel Strip onto a long edge of the Roof Lining.
NOTE – The opening of the Dowel Strip should be facing the same direction for both pieces.
1.20Repeat steps 1.18 to 1.19 for the second Roof Lining.
NOTE – The opening of the Dowel Strip should be facing the same direction for both pieces.
