Description
Make a Christmas decoration that will last for years with this free advent calendar sewing pattern. This sweet advent calendar makes a tree on a fabric backing with little pockets for the days and adorable ornaments to go in the pockets! As you countdown to Christmas, you pull out an ornament and decorate the tree! You can either sew or glue every step so this is a really great craft project to do with the kidlets. Make the full calendar for a lovely heirloom Christmas decoration. Or make up the ornaments for beautiful tree decorations!

- +Preparation
- A piece of dowel approximately 24 inches long (or any thin tube that can take the weight of the calendar)
- Ribbon or twine approximately 30 inches long for hanging the calendar. You could use any width ribbon, we would recommend ¼ to 1 inch wide.
- Ribbon for hanging ornaments – you will need approximately 75 inches of ¼ or ½ inch wide ribbon
- 24 Buttons – These are for hanging your ornaments from. You can use any size, or even a variety. We used a variety sized between ⅜ and ⅝ inch.
- Felt or ribbon for attaching the calendar to the dowel. Depending on the width of your dowel, you will need approximately 8 inches long by ¾ inch wide. Wait to cut this until you reach the last step of attaching the calendar to your dowel.
- OPTIONAL – A small handful of batting or polyfill if you want to stuff any of your ornaments to give a slight 3D effect
- OPTIONAL – Any other decorations you want! Think ribbons, buttons, sparkles, eyes, embroidery etc.
- OPTIONAL – Fray stop or pinking shears if you are using fabric which frays
- Thread to match if you are sewing
- If you wish to sew it, you will need a sewing machine or a needle for hand sewing.
- Alternatively, you can use a hot glue gun.

This cute advent calendar is a tree on fabric backing with little pockets and adorable ornaments to go in the pockets!

Please read the full instructions before getting started.
Wash, dry, and press your fabric before starting your project. A bit of prep now prevents shrinking and means your garment will stay the same size you made it.
Never leave a child or baby unattended or allow to sleep in a garment made from one of our patterns with ties, snaps, buttons, or anything they could remove, choke on, or get caught on. Always use caution if you are unsure. We love our patterns, but we love your bundles of joy more!

Materials and ToolsThis pattern is designed to be created entirely using non-stretch fabrics that do not fray such as felt and fleece. We do not finish the edges of any of the parts of the calendar or ornaments. All the fabric requirements below are for felt or fleece.
If you wish to use fabrics that can fray such as cotton or quilting cotton, you can either finish the edges with a product such as fray stop, back them with an iron-on interfacing to make them sturdier, or cut using pinking shears to reduce fraying.
Backing fabric – This is what you will be attaching your tree and pockets to. You will need a piece that is 20 inches wide by 35 inches long. We used a cream felt fabric in the tutorial, but you could use any color.
The Tree – You will need a small scrap of brown for the trunk. The total green you will need for the tree is approximately 15 x 20 inches. For the solid tree option, this is just in one color. If you are doing the layers, you’ll need it split into 2 colors of green. And for the individual branches it can be split into 2 or 3 shades of green.
The Pouches – Approximately 20 x 15 inches of fabric for the pouches. We used a mix of red and green, but you could use any color.
Numbers – If you wish to number your pouches, you’ll need a contrasting color for the numbers. We used white. You will need approximately 15 x 10 inches to make all 24 numbers.
The Ornaments – The quantities for these are all scraps of various colors. See the chart on the next page for what colors we used for the tutorial. Use the same or choose your own. If you want to use exactly as per what we did in the tutorial, the complete colors you will need are: Red, grey, yellow, brown, black, white, dark blue, light blue, nude/skin, light green, mid green & dark green.

Printing Your PatternSettings
The pattern is a separate download. Choose either the US letter paper, A4 paper, or A0 paper size based on the printer you wish to use. If you are in the US or Canada then your printer will likely use US letter paper. Other regions normally use A4 paper. Some people prefer to print their patterns at a print shop: A0 is best in this case.
Print at 100%.
On the second page, you will find a 1-inch and a 3-inch square test box. Print this page first, on its own, and measure these squares.
Once you are happy that the test box is accurate, print the rest of the pattern pages.

File Types
We have included three to four file types for you to choose from. Please choose whichever you are more familiar with or works best with your cutting machine. For cut files of the smaller pieces for some of our patterns, like the Dolls House Quiet Book and Add-on, we do not include a PDF copy. All versions come with .SVG, .PNG, and .DXF.
You will start by downloading the files from your account. Open your software and choose the file type you’d like to work with.
Pattern Cut Files
When working with cut files to cut small pattern pieces, it is imperative that you make sure the file is the correct size prior to cutting. We have included a one-inch square box offset in each file. You should be able to move the square off to the side, so it isn’t cut with the rest of your file. For files that also have square pieces, please be sure to compare them to the cut chart in the original file instructions. We’d always prefer you double check than have something cut out that isn’t useable!
Other Cut Files
For all other cut files, you should resize to your project needs. Please do keep in mind the size of some of the features. Going very small may make it difficult to cut smaller fonts or finer details.
Media
As mentioned earlier, it is very important to choose the correct media to for your cut. There is a huge selection to choose from and it can be overwhelming. Be sure to use the materials suggested by your machine for the type of project you are completing.
Download DXF FileCutting InstructionsThe Advent Calendar has three tree option: A solid tree piece, tree branch layers arranged in rows, and individual branch pieces. Choose your tree style and cut the pieces appropriately.
The Advent Calendar also has two pouch options: Row style and individual pockets.
The Advent Calendar has several numbering options: you can leave the pouches unnumbered, stitch or use fabric paint to number the pouches, or use the numbers provided to cut felt to attach. If you are cutting the numbers from felt, cut one of each number 1 – 24.
You will need 24 ornaments and one tree topper. You will find there are 26 options in the pattern pieces. You can pick your favorite 24 or mix and match them so you have some duplicates of ones you like the most. You may like one of the stars as the tree topper as we have used in the tutorial, or an Angel, or any other ornament. Whatever you would prefer! Cut the fabric for each as directed on the pattern pieces.

Cutting Checklist:

- ASSEMBLE TREE – Place the tree trunk in the center of the backing approximately 13.5 inches from the bottom. Based upon the tree style you selected, attach the tree to the backing piece. SOLID TREE OPTION – If using the solid tree, sew or glue around the outside edge of the tree. TREE BRANCH LAYERS OPTION – If using the tree branch layers, attach the branches starting with the bottom layer and working your way to the top. INDIVIDUAL BRANCH PIECES OPTION – Decide upon your layout with the various colors and assemble starting at the bottom working your way to the top.
- NUMBERS – If you wish to label each of the pouches, do this now. If stitching or using fabric paint, label each pouch 1 to 24. If using felt numbers, stitch, or glue around the outside edge of each number. For the individual pouches option, put the label in the center of the pouch. For the pouch strips option, space your numbers evenly across the strip. Your pouches will be divided separately every 3 inches in the next step.
- POUCHES – Based upon the pouch style you selected, attach the pouches to the bottom half of the backing. Individual pouches need to be spaced evenly in four rows of six. Sew down one side, across the bottom, and up the opposite side of each pouch. The four row pouches will be spaced evenly. Sew down one side, across the bottom, and up the opposite side of each pouch. Sew a vertical line down every 3 inches to create the six pouches from each row.
- ORNAMENTS – You will need to select 24 ornaments plus one tree topper for the calendar. The tutorial uses the star as a tree topper, but you can use any ornament you wish! Assemble each ornament by either gluing or sewing it together. Assemble from the bottom layer of the ornament upwards, using the completed image on the pattern piece or the full sewing instructions below as a guide.
- FINISHING – Place your selected tree topper and attach by gluing or sewing in position. Add 24 buttons sporadically throughout the tree. The ornaments will hang from these buttons. Cut 4 short strips of ribbon or felt. The strips in the tutorial are 2 inches long by ¾ inch wide. Yours may vary based upon the width of your dowel. Loop the strips and space them evenly across the top of the backing piece. Attach by gluing or sewing. Run a dowel through the loops. Either by gluing or sewing, attach a 3-inch-long strip of ribbon or twine to the top back of each of your 24 ornaments (not necessary for your tree topper ornament/star, this is already attached). This loop will be used to hang the calendar. Place each ornament into a pouch, hang, and enjoy your holiday season!

- Cut felt or ribbon approximately 10 inches long. Tie into a bow and attach to the wreath.

- Use ribbon, paint, stitching, and any other supplies to embellish your gingerbread man or woman. Have fun with this one!

- Using a blanket stitch, attach the two stars. Leave a small opening to stuff the star.

While you could attach these with glue, enthusiastic little fingers may pull these off. So I would recommend sewing them on to prolong the life of your calendar.
5.3Cut 4 short strips of ribbon or felt. The strips in the tutorial are 2 inches long by ¾ inch wide. Yours may vary based upon the width of your dowel.
Loop the strips and space them evenly across the top of the backing piece.
Attach by gluing or sewing. Run a dowel through the loops.
5.4Either by gluing or sewing, attach a 3-inch-long strip of ribbon or twine to the top back of each of your 24 ornaments (not necessary for your tree topper ornament/star, this is already attached).
NOTE – Depending on what size buttons you used, you may need to use a slightly longer ribbon. Make sure to check that the loop is enough after being attached that it can fit around the button.
5.5Use ribbon or twine to create a long loop from the dowel. Tie it on either end.
This loop will be used to hang the calendar.
Place each ornament into a pouch, hang, and enjoy your holiday season!

Materials and Tools
This pattern is designed to be created entirely using non-stretch fabrics that do not fray such as felt and fleece. We do not finish the edges of any of the parts of the calendar or ornaments. All the fabric requirements below are for felt or fleece.
If you wish to use fabrics that can fray such as cotton or quilting cotton, you can either finish the edges with a product such as fray stop, back them with an iron-on interfacing to make them sturdier, or cut using pinking shears to reduce fraying.
Backing fabric – This is what you will be attaching your tree and pockets to. You will need a piece that is 20 inches wide by 35 inches long. We used a cream felt fabric in the tutorial, but you could use any color.
The Tree – You will need a small scrap of brown for the trunk. The total green you will need for the tree is approximately 15 x 20 inches. For the solid tree option, this is just in one color. If you are doing the layers, you’ll need it split into 2 colors of green. And for the individual branches it can be split into 2 or 3 shades of green.
The Pouches – Approximately 20 x 15 inches of fabric for the pouches. We used a mix of red and green, but you could use any color.
Numbers – If you wish to number your pouches, you’ll need a contrasting color for the numbers. We used white. You will need approximately 15 x 10 inches to make all 24 numbers.
The Ornaments – The quantities for these are all scraps of various colors. See the chart on the next page for what colors we used for the tutorial. Use the same or choose your own. If you want to use exactly as per what we did in the tutorial, the complete colors you will need are: Red, grey, yellow, brown, black, white, dark blue, light blue, nude/skin, light green, mid green & dark green.
You will also need:
- A piece of dowel approximately 24 inches long (or any thin tube that can take the weight of the calendar)
- Ribbon or twine approximately 30 inches long for hanging the calendar. You could use any width ribbon, we would recommend ¼ to 1 inch wide.
- Ribbon for hanging ornaments – you will need approximately 75 inches of ¼ or ½ inch wide ribbon
- 24 Buttons – These are for hanging your ornaments from. You can use any size, or even a variety. We used a variety sized between ⅜ and ⅝ inch.
- Felt or ribbon for attaching the calendar to the dowel. Depending on the width of your dowel, you will need approximately 8 inches long by ¾ inch wide. Wait to cut this until you reach the last step of attaching the calendar to your dowel.
- OPTIONAL – A small handful of batting or polyfill if you want to stuff any of your ornaments to give a slight 3D effect
- OPTIONAL – Any other decorations you want! Think ribbons, buttons, sparkles, eyes, embroidery etc.
- OPTIONAL – Fray stop or pinking shears if you are using fabric which frays
- Thread to match if you are sewing
Tools: You can construct the calendar & ornaments either by sewing using a simple straight or zig zag stitch, or by gluing:
- If you wish to sew it, you will need a sewing machine or a needle for hand sewing.
- Alternatively, you can use a hot glue gun.
- You will also need scissors and pins.
