Project OverviewBodice & Sleeves Height Adjustment
Difficulty Level = Beginner
Our patterns are designed for a height of 5 foot 6. If your height is above/below this, you will need to adjust the bodice and sleeve to get the perfect fit. Follow this tutorial for woven or knit pattern.
You will need to lengthen/shorten half way through the armhole and at the waist on your front and back bodice. You will distribute the adjustment throughout the pattern piece, not just at one point. This is to ensure the height is distributed evenly which will give you the most accurate fit.
Our Facebook group is a great place to get help, share your tips and creations! We are a friendly bunch, and we love to help and see what you have made.
Please read the full instructions before getting started.
Wash, dry, and press your fabric before starting your project. A bit of prep now prevents shrinking and means your garment will stay the same size you made it.
Never leave a child or baby unattended or allow to sleep in a garment made from one of our patterns with ties, snaps, buttons, or anything they could remove, choke on, or get caught on. Always use caution if you are unsure. We love our patterns, but we love your bundles of joy more!

Fitting NotesOur patterns are designed for a height of 5 foot 6.
To calculate the adjustment length, subtract your height from 5 foot 6. The difference is what you will need to adjust your pattern by. As this height measurement is for a full-length pattern, and we are only adjusting the bodice, you will halve this amount to get your measurement needed. You will be adjusting the bodice in two places, so this amount will be halved again. This will ensure you are distributing the difference throughout the bodice pattern.
The table below shows how to calculate your measurement.
Use this as a guideline to calculate the number of inches required to adjust the pattern pieces by.

- + Instructions
1 . Trace your Pattern Pieces1.1
Trace your front bodice pattern piece. If the pattern has adjustment lines, usually marked as shorten/lengthen, transfer these onto the traced pattern piece.
If the pattern doesn’t have adjustment lines, draw them half way through the armscye (high bust) and at the waist.
Place this pattern piece on top of another larger piece of paper.
1.2Tape the shoulder down onto the larger piece of paper.
Draw a straight line, from the shoulder straight down to the waist. This line can be anywhere on the pattern, as long as it is straight. You’ll use this line as a balance line to keep the cut pattern pieces aligned once you’ve moved them.
1.3Cut straight through the first adjustment line. Move the cut pattern piece out the way.
Extend the balance line down onto the piece of paper.
Cut across the waist adjustment line.
Repeat steps 1.1 to 1.3 for the back bodice.
Repeat steps 1.1 for the sleeve pattern piece. Mark the front and back of your sleeve.
If you are adding length to the bodice move to step 2. If you are shortening the bodice skip to step 3.
2 . OPTION Adding Length2.1Cut the traced pattern piece across the waist adjustment line. You will be spreading both panels to add length.
Measure from the top pattern piece down, using your calculated measurement, and tape the middle panel in place. Keep the panel aligned to the balance line.
Repeat for the second panel piece.
2.2Draw around your new bodice shape.
2.3Take your traced pattern piece off the paper. Smooth out any lines using a dotted line.
Cut out your new pattern piece.
You have now successfully added length into the front bodice.
Repeat steps 2.1 to 2.4 for the back bodice.
Now that you’ve adjusted the bodice, you’ll need to adjust the sleeve head so that the pattern pieces still fit together.
3 . OPTION Shortening the Bodice3.1You will be removing length at the adjustment lines, using your calculated measurement.
Take the middle panel piece and overlap it onto the top taped down panel, overlapping by your measurement amount. Tape in place.
3.2Repeat to overlap the bottom panel onto the middle panel.
3.3Draw around your pattern piece.
3.4Take your traced pattern piece off the paper. Smooth out any lines.
Cut out your new pattern piece along the dotted line.
Repeat steps 3.1 to 3.4 for the back bodice.
Now that you’ve adjusted the bodice, you’ll need to adjust the sleeve head so that the pattern pieces still fit together.
Follow step 4.
4 . Sleeve Head Adjustment4.1Starting from the bottom corner of the armscye, following the curve, measure the distance to the adjustment line (line 1).
Use this measurement and measure from the outer edge of the sleeve towards the sleeve head (line 2) on the front and back of the sleeve. Mark this point (shown in red).
4.2Draw a line vertically through the sleeve pattern, starting at your marks on the sleeve head, drawing straight down to the cuff.
You will have a line down the front and back of the sleeve.
4.3Cut through each line, leaving a little hinge at the cuff edge.
Place this sleeve pattern piece on top of a larger piece of paper.
Follow step 5 if you need to increase the sleeve head. Follow step 6 to decrease the sleeve head.
5 . OPTION Increase Sleeve Head5.1Take the cut piece and move it out, opening the slit you cut by the same measurement you adjusted the bodice pattern by.
Tape down the cut piece.
5.2Draw around the sleeve pattern piece. Remove the traced sleeve piece.
Your drawn sleeve will be an odd shape. Draw a dotted line smoothing out the curve.
TIP – Use a french curve ruler to round the curve.
5.3Cut out your new sleeve following the dotted line. Your sleeve head adjustment is now complete.
I recommend sewing a muslin using your adjusted pattern pieces. This will help you check the fit before sewing your final garment.
6 . OPTION Decrease Sleeve Head6.1Take the cut piece and overlap it, using the same measurement you adjusted the body pattern by.
Tape in place.
6.2Draw around the sleeve pattern piece.
Your drawn sleeve will be an odd shape. Draw a dotted line smoothing out the curve.
TIP – Use a french curve ruler to round the curve.
6.3Cut out your new sleeve.
Your sleeve head adjustment is complete.
I recommend sewing a muslin using your adjusted pattern pieces. This will help you check the fit before sewing your final garment.
