Description
Every tiny dancer needs a pair of handmade Children’s Ballet Leg warmers to complete their look. The Children’s Ballet Leg Warmers sewing pattern is beginner-friendly, quick to make, and fun to customize with your favorite knit fabrics. These single seam leg warmers have a band at the top and the bottom and can be paired with optional clear elastic for added stability.

- +Preparation
- Sizing – Sizing varies in different countries and stores, so please measure your model before picking your size. The ready-to-wear size your model normally fits into may be different from our size chart.
- Picking your size – Choose your size using the height measurements in the size chart. If your measurements fall into different sizes, choose the larger size. The pattern is drafted with a 20% negative ease from the calf measurement, so they may be looser fitting. If your measurements are smaller, we recommend adding clear elastic to support it, or size down.
- Muslin – I recommend you sew a muslin (test garment) first so you can get the perfect fit:
- Use an inexpensive knit fabric similar in weight and stretch to the final fabric you plan to use.
- Baste all the pieces together using a ⅜ inch seam allowance.
- Try on. If you are happy with the fit, continue to your final garment.
- If you feel the fit needs adjusting for your personal shape, turn the muslin inside out and try on again. Adjust the seams with pins/clips until you are happy.
- Trim your new seam allowances to ⅜ of an inch and pull out your basting stitches.
- These resulting pieces are your pattern pieces instead of the original pattern pieces. Continue to sew your final garment.
- Make sure to keep your adjusted pattern pieces in case you wish to make more!

- Fabric – Your fabric needs to be a stretch/knit fabric with a slight 2-way stretch. Great examples are textured knit, double brushed poly, athletic knit, french terry, cotton lycra and liverpool.
- It will need to have at least 20% stretch with good recovery to fit as it’s designed. To check how much stretch your fabric has, take a piece of fabric, and pull along its stretch. If it allows you to stretch it at least 20% longer than its original length, then it has at least 20% stretch. I.e. A 2-inch piece of unstretched fabric should be able to be stretched to 2.4 inches.
- OPTIONAL Clear elastic with a minimum width of ⅜ inches. Approximately 1 yard will be sufficient for all sizes.
- Thread to match
- Legs – Fabric cut 2
- Bands – Fabric cut 4
- Use a ball point needle of a size appropriate to your fabric when working with knits – The ball point needle has a slightly rounded tip and will prevent damaging the fibre. Use ball point pins or clips and, if you can’t, use regular pins into the seam allowance and you should be just fine.
- Use a stretch stitch – You can use either a short and narrow zigzag or a stretch stitch (lightning bolt stitch) for construction. Test on a scrap of fabric to find which stitch and tension settings work best for you. You don’t want the fabric to pucker under your stitches.
- Your machine might have many fancy stretch stitches and you are welcome to play with them, but often the basic zigzag or stretch stitch are just right.
- Use a walking foot – Using a walking-foot is not a necessity but it is highly recommended when working on a stretchy knit. The walking-foot helps to prevent one layer of fabric from stretching out while sewing. Both layers of fabrics are fed at the same time under your needle.
- Reduce your presser foot tension – Some machines will allow you to change your presser foot tension. Check your manual to see how to reduce your presser foot tension. Reducing tension will prevent your fabric from stretching while it goes through the machine.
- Use a ballpoint twin-needle (double needle) for top stitching – Using a twin-needle will give you a regular double line of straight stitches on the right side and a short and stretchy zigzag on the wrong side. Alternatively, if you don’t own a twin needle, you can use a medium size zigzag stitch for hemming and topstitching. I like to lengthen my stitch a little when top stitching with the twin needle. Test on a scrap of fabric to find what works best for you.
- Finishing the seams – Because knits don’t fray, it isn’t strictly necessary to finish your seams. That being said, you will achieve a more polished and durable look if you do an overcasting or zigzag stitch on your raw edges.

Fitting NotesThe leg warmers are loose fitting and can be ruched down around the ankles or pulled up to sit just under the knee, with optional clear elastic for support if needed.

Printing Your PatternSettings
The pattern is a separate download. Choose either the US letter paper, A4 paper, or A0 paper size based on the printer you wish to use. If you are in the US or Canada then your printer will likely use US letter paper. Other regions normally use A4 paper. Some people prefer to print their patterns at a print shop: A0 is best in this case.
Print at 100%.
On the second page, you will find a 1-inch and a 3-inch square test box. Print this page first, on its own, and measure these squares.
Once you are happy that the test box is accurate, print the rest of the pattern pages.

Fabric TipsTips for Sewing with Knit Fabrics
Using a serger is not a necessity to sew with knit fabrics! Here are a few tips to get the best results on a regular sewing machine:

- LEGS – Fold a Leg in half widthwise right sides together, matching short edges. Stitch. Turn right side out. Repeat for other Leg.
- BANDS – Fold Band in half widthwise right sides together, matching short edges. Stitch. Turn right side out. Repeat for three Bands.
- ATTACH BANDS TO LEGS – Fold Band in half lengthwise, wrong sides together. Find and mark quarter points of Band and top edge of Leg. Place Band over Leg right sides together matching quarter points. Stitch. Fold Band up. Repeat to attach Band at the bottom edge of Leg. Repeat for second Leg and Bands.

Sewing –

1.1Fold the Leg in half widthwise, right sides together, matching the short edges. Pin.
1.2Serge or stitch using a ⅜ inch seam allowance.
1.3If using a serger, use a wide eye needle to thread the tail back through the stitches.
1.4Turn the Leg right side out.
1.5Repeat steps 1.1 to 1.4 for the second Leg.
2 . Bands2.1Fold the Band in half widthwise, right sides together, matching the short edges. Pin.
2.2Serge or stitch using a ⅜ inch seam allowance.
2.3Turn the Band right side out.
2.4Repeat steps 2.1 to 2.3 for the remaining three Bands. You will have a total of four Bands (two pairs).
3 . Attaching Bands3.1Fold your Band in half lengthwise, wrong sides together.
3.2Find and mark the quarter points of the raw edge of the Band.
3.3Find and mark the quarter points of the top edge of the Leg.
3.4Place the Band over the Leg, right sides together, matching quarter points. Pin.
TIP – Match the seams together.
3.5Serge or stitch using a ⅜ inch seam allowance.
If using a serger, use a wide eye needle to thread the tail back through the stitches.
OPTIONAL: If your leg warmers need extra support to stay in place, you might want to use clear elastic to stabilize the Band seams.
Pin the clear elastic, without stretching it, and incorporate it into the Band seam.
TIP – Leave an excess of ½ inch of clear elastic on either side of the Band seam. This will make it easier to handle at the beginning and end.
NOTE – You are merely placing the elastic, not stretching it while you are pinning it. If the elastic is stretched, it will make the fabric pull and pucker.
Stitch or serge using a ⅜ inch seam allowance and a stretch stitch. Go slow and check that the elastic is being sewn into the seam as you sew.
TIP – You may find it easier to sew the seam with the elastic on the top of the fabric, as it has less contact with the feed dogs on your machine. Experiment to see which way works best with your machine.
TIP – If you are using a serger, turn the knife off to avoid cutting the elastic.
TIP – You may find it easier to sew using a Teflon coated presser foot as the elastic will not stick to it.
3.6Fold the Cuff up.
3.7Repeat steps 3.1 to 3.6 to attach a second Cuff onto the bottom edge of the Leg.
3.8Repeat steps 3.1 to 3.7 to attach the second pair of Cuffs onto the second Leg.
