Project OverviewDinosaur / Dragon Pillow
Difficulty Level = Beginner
Take your kids back in time with their very own dinosaur pillow. Or explore the mythical and magical world of dragons. Use ribbons, trims, and scraps of beautiful fabric to make a unique and fun pillow.
Our Facebook group is a great place to get help, share your tips and creations! We are a friendly bunch, and we love to help and see what you have made.
Please read the full instructions before getting started.
Wash, dry, and press your fabric before starting your project. A bit of prep now prevents shrinking and means your garment will stay the same size you made it.
Never leave a child or baby unattended or allow to sleep in a garment made from one of our patterns with ties, snaps, buttons, or anything they could remove, choke on, or get caught on. Always use caution if you are unsure. We love our patterns, but we love your bundles of joy more!

Printing Your PatternSettings
The pattern is a separate download. Choose either the US letter paper, A4 paper, or A0 paper size based on the printer you wish to use. If you are in the US or Canada then your printer will likely use US letter paper. Other regions normally use A4 paper. Some people prefer to print their patterns at a print shop: A0 is best in this case.
Print at 100%.
On the second page, you will find a 1-inch and a 3-inch square test box. Print this page first, on its own, and measure these squares.
Once you are happy that the test box is accurate, print the rest of the pattern pages.
Please follow this video for information and assistance on assembling this pattern.
Also, please note that some Rebecca Page patterns and projects also come with cut files and a printable design page which you can use to plan your project if you wish. These are provided in a separate section below to avoid any confusion!

- + Instructions
- MOUTH, DRAGON TEETH AND EYES – Use embroidery thread, vinyl, or iron-on adhesive to cut then sew or iron on the nose and eyes to each of the Body pieces.
- SPIKES – Layer batting, one Spike right side up, Spike right side down. Stitch outside edges. Clip and trim seam allowance. Turn. Optional topstitch. Repeat for all Spikes. Place Spikes on the Body and tail and baste.
- DINOSAUR TOES – Place pair of front toes right sides together. Stitch along top curved edges. Clip into the seams. Turn and press. Baste the toes onto a front foot, right sides together. Repeat for the front toes on the other Body piece and both back toes on each Body piece.
- DRAGON CLAWS – Stitch pair of Claws right sides together, along outer edges. Clip and trim seam allowance. Turn out and press. Repeat for all pairs. Baste a set of three Claws onto each foot, right sides together.
- DRAGON WINGS – Layer a dragon Wing right side up, batting, and mirror Wing right side facing down. Stitch outside edges. Clip and trim seam allowance. Turn and press. Optional – sew decorative stitches. Topstitch Wing onto Body. Repeat for the other Wing.
- BODY – Sew pillow right sides together leaving a 5-inch gap at the bottom for turning the pillow through. Clip into the curves where the tail and leg meet, and where the legs meet the tummy. Use pinking shears to trim the seam allowance all the way around the Body. Turn the dinosaur/dragon through the gap. Add stuffing. Use a slipstitch to sew the gap closed.
- Use the pattern markings on the pillow body to embroider the mouth and eyes. If you are sewing a dragon, add teeth to the mouth.
- OPTION – Use fabric and iron-on adhesive. For this method, trace the pattern pieces onto your fabric. Apply the iron-on adhesive to your fabric pieces and cut out, making sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Iron these pieces onto the body in the positions indicated by the pattern markings.
- OPTION – Use the cut files with a die cutting machine and iron-on adhesive the vinyl pieces using the pattern markings.

0 . PreparationSeam Allowance
¼ inch seam allowance included – Top stitching ⅛ inch – Basting ⅛ inch
0.1Mouth, eyes, and dragon teeth options:
1 . Spikes1.0This step is the same for both the dinosaur and dragon Spikes. We used five Spikes on the back and two on the tail but the number of Spikes you would like to add is up to you.
1.2Turn the Spike right way out. Use a blunt object, like a chopstick, to push out the corner. Press.
OPTIONAL – Topstitch ⅛ inch around the outer edges.
Repeat step 1.1 to 1.2 for each Spike
1.3Place the Spikes onto one of the Body pieces, using the pattern markings as guidelines, right sides together.
Baste at ⅛ inch.
1.4Repeat step 1.3 to baste Spikes onto the tail, using the marking on the tail as a guide.
2 . Dinosaur Toes2.0If you are sewing a dragon pillow skip to step 3.
3 . Dragon Claws3.0If you are sewing a dinosaur pillow skip to step 6.
3.2Turn the claw right way out. Use a blunt object, like a chopstick, to push out the corner. Press.
OPTIONAL – Topstitch ⅛ inch around the outer edges.
Repeat steps 3.2 to 3.3 for each pair of Claws. You should have six in total.
3.3Place a set of three Claws onto a foot, matching the raw edges. Baste bottom edge at ⅛ inch.
Repeat step 3.3 to baste the other set of three Claws to the second foot.
4 . Dragon Wings4.0If you are sewing a dinosaur pillow skip to step 5.
4.1Take a Dragon Wing and press the longer straight edge to the wrong side by ¼ inch and press.
Repeat for the second Wing.
4.3Turn the dragon Wing right way out and press. Check that your folded seam is still tucked in.
OPTIONAL – Topstitch ⅛ inch around the outer edges. Or sew decorative stitches onto the Wing.
4.4Place the Wing onto a Body piece with the folded open seams facing the neck. Topstitch at ⅛ inch.
NOTE – Check you have the correct Wing on the correct Body piece.
TIP – For added strength, you could use a triple stitch.
Repeat for steps 4.1 to 4.4 for the other Wing.
5 . Dragon Tongue5.0If you are sewing a dinosaur pillow skip to step 6.
5.1Using the manufacturer’s instructions iron the iron-on adhesive onto the two Tongue pieces, bonding the two pieces, wrong sides together.
TIP – If you are using felt, use a lower heat when ironing the iron-on adhesive.
5.2Topstitch along the middle of the Tongue.
5.3Place the Tongue onto a Body piece matching the raw edges. Baste at ⅛ inch.
6 . Body6.0This step is the same for both the dinosaur and dragon.
6.1Place Body pieces, right sides together, and pin/clip in place, leaving a 5-inch gap between the legs for turning the pillow through.
TIP – Check the Spikes on the Body and tail are laying flat in between the two layers and out of the way.
6.3Clip into the curves where the tail meets the leg, and where the legs meet the tummy. Be careful not to cut into your stitches.
Use pinking shears to trim the seam allowance all the way around the Body, except where the opening is.
6.4Turn the dinosaur/dragon through the gap.
Add stuffing. If you would like a flatter dinosaur / dragon (such as for a pillow), stuff it flat. If you would like a fuller dinosaur/dragon (such as for a toy), add more stuffing.
6.5Use a slipstitch (also called a ‘ladder stitch’) to stitch the bottom of the dinosaur/dragon.
Fold your fabric under by ¼ inch. You will be stitching along this folded edge.
Thread your needle, tying the two thread tail ends together in a knot. This will provide added strength to your finished seam.
Push your needle up from the inside of the pillow to the outside, through one of the folds, pulling the thread tail completely through. Your knotted end will now be nicely concealed within the seam on the inside.
Directly across from your starting point, push the needle down and then back up through the opposite seam fold to create a stitch that is between ¼ – ½ inch long. When you pull the thread through, you will notice that the stitch you just made is concealed within the seam crease, and there will be a horizontal stitch connecting the left and right sides of your opening.
Pull the thread through so that it is taut.
6.6Repeat these steps, pinching both sides together as you sew (this will help keep your stitching even), until you reach the end of the opening.
To tighten the stitches, gently pull the thread. This will conceal the stitches in between the seams.
We’ve left the stitches loose in this picture to show you what the ladder stitch looks like. You will be pulling the thread through and taut after each stitch.
To end off you create a loop for your needle to pass through by picking up a tiny section of the opposite seam and passing your needle through the loop. Tighten to form a knot. If you need to reinforce the stitching repeat this step. Snip your threads.
