- +Preparation
- OPTIONAL Fusible webbing e.g. Pellon 805 Wonder-Under, ‘heat n bond’, ‘bondaweb’, fusible web or iron-on adhesive. Approximately 1 yard will be sufficient if adding all decorations.
- OR OPTIONAL Fabric glue – If you are not using double-sided interfacing, use this as an alternative.
- OPTIONAL Medium or light weight fusible interfacing. Approximately 1 yard will be sufficient.
- OPTIONAL Handle and Straps – ¼ yard of Iron on interfacing.
- NOTE – Premade straps or webbing can be used in place of the fabric straps.
- Batting – about 1 yard, this project can get quite thick, so choosing a thin and stable batting will be quite helpful.
- OPTIONAL Hook and Loop tape (Velcro) – Approximately 1 yard. This is used for the OPTIONAL Quiet Book decorations and the OPTIONAL Straps. Other decorations have optional tape.
- OPTIONAL Trims – The characters included in the mat require optional facial features. If you are adding decorations, you can use embroidery floss or fabric paint to create the faces. If you would like to add a Whale spout, this can be created using embroidery thread.

Project OverviewFairytale Playmat
Difficulty Level = Beginner
The Fairytale Playmat comes with lots of options and all kinds of interactive elements to play with, including dolls.
The mat has several blocks, each with its own unique fairytale story. It is easy to sew, especially if you use felt fabric and fusible webbing to create the decorations. It is not a quick sew but you will certainly enjoy the creative process. Use all the elements included or make changes to your style and unique story that you want to tell. The elements included are not only for the block they are associated with, but can be placed within different blocks when sewn.
Add the optional straps to roll the mat up and a handle to carry it with.

Wash, dry, and press your fabric before starting your project. A bit of prep now prevents shrinking and means your garment will stay the same size you made it.
Never leave a child or baby unattended or allow to sleep in a garment made from one of our patterns with ties, snaps, buttons, or anything they could remove, choke on, or get caught on. Always use caution if you are unsure. We love our patterns, but we love your bundles of joy more!

Materials and ToolsMain and Lining fabric – You will need any medium weight woven (non-stretch) fabric, such as quilting cotton, cotton, or poly cotton. Most people use a dark color for the Pathway. All the Blocks will be placed on top, leaving this exposed as the Pathway.
NOTE – If you are using light colored fabrics for your Blocks & Edges, use either the same fabric, or a plain fabric to line them with so that you cannot see the Pathway fabric underneath.
OPTIONAL Fairytale Block Fabrics – these are the fabrics for the decorations on each block. The edges of these are not finished so we recommend a non-fraying fabric such as felt. You will need assorted colors in scrap size. Many stores sell felt packs, or it is a great one to raid your stash for.

NOTE – Blocks are the areas that create the blocks between the roads. Sea/Border are around the edges of the mat.
* If you are using a narrower fabric, a directional print, or a fabric with nap you may need more.

You will also need:
Tools needed are sewing machine (or you could do it by hand), needle (this project can get quite thick. You might find it easier to use a needle designed for thicker projects, rather than the standard needle size), scissors, pins. OPTIONAL safety pins or quilting safety pins for attaching all the layers before you sew them together. OPTIONAL iron (if using fusible interfacing/adhesive).
Printing Your PatternSettings
The pattern is a separate download. Choose either the US letter paper, A4 paper, or A0 paper size based on the printer you wish to use. If you are in the US or Canada then your printer will likely use US letter paper. Other regions normally use A4 paper. Some people prefer to print their patterns at a print shop: A0 is best in this case.
Print at 100%.
On the second page, you will find a 1-inch and a 3-inch square test box. Print this page first, on its own, and measure these squares.
Once you are happy that the test box is accurate, print the rest of the pattern pages.

File Types
We have included three to four file types for you to choose from. Please choose whichever you are more familiar with or works best with your cutting machine. For cut files of the smaller pieces for some of our patterns, like the Dolls House Quiet Book and Add-on, we do not include a PDF copy. All versions come with .SVG, .PNG, and .DXF.
You will start by downloading the files from your account. Open your software and choose the file type you’d like to work with.
Pattern Cut Files
When working with cut files to cut small pattern pieces, it is imperative that you make sure the file is the correct size prior to cutting. We have included a one-inch square box offset in each file. You should be able to move the square off to the side, so it isn’t cut with the rest of your file. For files that also have square pieces, please be sure to compare them to the cut chart in the original file instructions. We’d always prefer you double check than have something cut out that isn’t useable!
Other Cut Files
For all other cut files, you should resize to your project needs. Please do keep in mind the size of some of the features. Going very small may make it difficult to cut smaller fonts or finer details.
Media
As mentioned earlier, it is very important to choose the correct media to for your cut. There is a huge selection to choose from and it can be overwhelming. Be sure to use the materials suggested by your machine for the type of project you are completing.

OPTIONAL Fairytale Block Decorations Cutting Checklist:
You can choose ALL or some of the decorations to add to your Mat. Decide which decorations you’d like, then cut each of the pieces according to the directions on the pattern piece. Some of the decorations can be moved around to opposite Blocks, but each Block stays in the same place. The decorations do not have any seam allowances. The Blocks & Edges all include a ¼ inch seam allowance.
Most of the decorations are double sided. You will need to cut the pattern pieces as per the directions and place them onto a scrap piece of the same or contrast fabric (with fusible webbing, glue or just placed), and then stitched down. Each piece will then be cut around the first to create the reverse layer.
NOTE – If you are using quilting cotton for the decorations, cut the fabric on the bias (diagonally) to reduce fraying. The small amount of fraying that will occur adds charm to your Mat. If you are using felt, you can cut at any angle, as it doesn’t fray!
NOTE – If you are using fusible webbing, do not cut any of the pieces requiring this out yet. Place the fabric for these pieces aside. You will be cutting these in Section A. If you are not using any glue or interfacing, cut each piece out as per the instructions, put them in piles according to the block/edge piece they go on and skip to the blocks. If you are using fabric glue, cut each piece out as per the instructions, put them in piles according to which block/edge piece they go on and skip to the blocks, then use the fabric glue instead of interfacing as per the manufacturer’s instructions.
TIP – Put the paper pattern pieces and fabric pieces in an individual envelope/zip-lock/plastic wallet for each block to keep each block separate.

- BLOCKS ASSEMBLY – Stitch the Main Block and Block Lining pieces right sides together. Clip corners. Trim seam allowance. Carefully pull the Block Lining away from the Main Block and any decorations if added. Clip a hole approximately 2-3 inches in the center of the Block Lining piece only. Turn the Block through the hole and push out corners/edges. Carefully roll the seams on the edges so that the seam line is directly in the middle of the edge. Press. Repeat for all Blocks.
- BORDERS ASSEMBLY – Place Main Border and Border Lining right sides together. For Border piece A, stitch both short edges and the curved edge. For the straight Border pieces, A, C, D and F, stitch one long straight side. For Border B and E, stitch the curvy long side. Clip corners. Trim seam allowance. Turn right sides out and push out corners/edges. Carefully roll the seams so that the seam line is directly in the middle of the edge. Press.
- ATTACH BLOCKS AND EDGES – Pin Border A to Border B Main to Main, Lining to Lining, matching seams. Stitch. Press seam open. Stitch Border C to other side of Border B right sides together. Press seam open. Stitch Border D to Border E right sides together. Stitch Border F to Border E right sides together. Press seams open. Stitch Border F to Border A right sides together. Stitch Border C to Border D right sides together. Press seams open. Lay Playmat right side up. Place Border right side facing up, matching raw edges. Pin. Place Blocks right sides facing up. Pin. Stitch outer edges of Blocks and inner edge of Border using preferred method. Iron/glue/place Boat pieces and stitch. Stitch loop pieces onto Border for Sea Creatures. Place Sea Creatures onto Border. OPTIONAL: Stitch details onto Creatures.
- QUILT – Layer the pieces Fairytale Playmat Backing right side down, Batting right side up, Playmat right side up. Pin. Quilt all three layers together.
- OPTIONAL FASTENINGS – Fold a Strap in half lengthways, right sides together. Finger press. Open and lay it right sides up. Mark ¼ inch in from the seam allowance on the long side of one end of the Strap. Mark ¼ inch from the seam allowance diagonally opposite on the other end of the Strap. Stitch hook tape 1½ inches from the short raw edge, centering it between the fold line and the mark. Repeat with loop tape on the opposite side. Fold Strap in half lengthways, right sides together. Stitch across short end near loop, then along the long side. Trim corners. Turn and press. OPTIONAL: Topstitch. Repeat for other Strap. Fold Handle in half lengthways, right sides together. Stitch the long edge. Turn right sides out. Press. OPTIONAL: Topstitch. Place the playmat right sides up. Fold the Chariot towards Apple Cottage. The playmat should now be folded with the fold line running away from the Apple Cottage away down the mat. You will attach Straps and Handle to opposite end. Put a pin in the playmat where the fold is on the edge still sticking out from the rolled-up playmat. Unroll the playmat again. Measure 3 inches from raw edge of Batting and mark a pin. Measure 3 inches in from the folded edge and mark a pin. Lay Straps centered over each pin, matching raw edges with the Border, and Strap facing into the mat. Pin. Place each end of the Handle 4 ½ inches in from each Strap, matching raw edges with the Border. Pin. Stitch, making a 1-inch rectangle ¼ inch from the edge of each end. Stitch diagonally across to make a X in the middle for additional strength.
- BIND EDGES – Lay the playmat flat. Move Handle and Straps into playmat if added. Starting with one long edge fold Backing over onto Batting. Fold Batting over onto playmat so that the Backing you see is approximately half the width of the straight parts of the Border (e.g., so the Backing & Border are approximately equal widths). Pin. Repeat with the parallel long edge. Repeat with the short edge. Keep corners straight or miter them. Repeat with the short edge where the Straps and Handle are. Stitch.
- OPTIONAL ROLLING THE MAT UP – Lay the playmat flat. Extend Handle and Straps off edge of the playmat out flat. Fold side of playmat, with the fold line running away from the Apple Cottage towards the Straps. Roll the playmat over and over until you get to Straps. Leave Straps facing away from playmat. Roll each Strap around in same direction. Let each Strap fold over onto itself, connect hook and loop and secures the playmat.
- Machine stitch close to the edge of each piece (topstitch at ⅛ inch)
- Applique stitch using a sewing machine
- Applique stitch by hand
- Tie a knot by looping the thread through the fabric
- Insert the needle through the loop
- Pull the loop tight
- Pull the thread through the tightened loop
- Repeat this another time to create a second knot
- Put the needle down through the fabric where the knot is and bring it out 1-2 inches away
- Pull the thread taut and snip it close to the fabric (not too close!)
- Give the fabric a ruffle and let the end of the thread slip back into the fairytale playmat

0.1The instructions show how to assemble the fairytale playmat as per the cover photo. However, once you have prepared the pattern pieces, you can mix and match any of the decorations to put them on any of the blocks or edges you choose. There are pattern markings for the placements if you are assembling the blocks as per this tutorial.
NOTE – If you are placing the decorations as desired and not as per the pattern markings, remember that each Block/Edge has a ¼ inch seam allowance. You will need to add your decorations leaving adequate seam allowance. Check that the decorations will fit on all blocks first, if you are moving them around.
1 . OPTIONAL Fusible Webbing1.1Trace the pattern pieces for all the decorations you are using onto the backing of your fusible webbing. Make sure to write what each piece is on the paper side of the webbing.
NOTE – Pattern pieces should be traced with the right side of the pattern facing the backing (or mirrored).
1.2Cut roughly around the webbing for each piece. Do not cut on the lines as you will trim it later when the webbing has been attached to the fabric.
1.3Group the webbing pieces into colors (e.g., put all of the oranges together, all of the greens together, and so on).
1.4Keeping pieces grouped by color, apply the fusible adhesive to your fabric pieces, making sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
1.5Cut around each piece exactly on the lines.
TIP – Group the pieces by Block/Edge so that all the decorations for each Block/Edge are together.
2 . Mix and match2.0From here the instructions for the rest of this section are grouped by Block/Edge piece. Mix and match to create the look you want, adding any additional decorations or creativity you want to!
The instructions assume use of fusible webbing, following manufacturer’s application instructions. If you are using fabric glue, do this as per the manufacturer’s instructions. If you are stitching only, skip ironing the webbing step and go straight to stitching.
NOTE – Stitching each of the pieces in place isn’t strictly required if you are using fusible webbing or fabric glue as these should hold them on their own. However, we recommend stitching as well, as it will help hold the pieces, especially as small fingers play and pull at them.
TIP – Place a clean tea towel or scrap of quilting cotton on top of the pieces before you iron to protect your iron when using fusible webbing.
NOTE – Always make sure the pieces have completely cooled and the glue has dried before stitching.
3 . BLOCK 1 – Apple Cottage3.0The Apple Cottage block consists of a Cottage, an Apple Tree, two Flowers, eight Apples, a Basket and a Princess. The Cottage has a door that opens and closes. Apples, Flowers and the Princess can be moved around the mat.
3.1If you have used fusible webbing, peel the paper backing off each of the house pieces.
The block will be assembled as per the line drawing here.
3.2Iron/glue/place the House, Side House and Side Roof pieces onto Block 1 at the pattern markings.
Stitch around each piece, leaving the top edge of the House unstitched.
3.3Iron/glue/place the Roof and Window at the pattern markings.
3.4Stitch around.
3.5Place Door onto spare fabric. Stitch all the way around and cut out so they are double sided.
OPTIONAL: If desired, hand or machine stitch details to Door. If you would like to achieve the look we have created, use a regular straight stitch and stitch horizontal lines.
Place Door onto the House. Stitch only the left side of the Door so that it can be opened.
OPTIONAL: Draw around the Door onto the House using a disappearing ink pen or tailor’s chalk, to create the inside of the Door. Machine or hand stitch approximately ⅛ inch on the inside of the drawn line.
TIP – Try your disappearing ink pen on a scrap piece of fabric first, to make sure it won’t be seen on the House.
3.6If you have used fusible webbing, peel the paper backing off the Grass, Tree Trunk, Tree and Flower pieces.
Iron/glue/place Tree Trunk at the pattern markings.
Stitch around.
3.7Iron/glue/place the Grass and Tree, overlapping the Tree Trunk.
Stitch them all around.
3.8Iron/glue/place the Front Basket onto the spare fabric. Stitch only the top edge then cut out so it is double sided.
Iron/glue/place Back Basket onto Block 1. Place Front Basket on top and stitch around Back Basket, so you have a basket with an opening for the apples.
3.9OPTIONAL: If desired, hand stitch a stem and leaf onto each Apple.
OPTIONAL: If you want the Apples to be able to ‘stick’ to other felt items such as the Tree, stitch a small piece of hook tape to the back of each Apple.
Lay the spare fabric wrong side up. Place a ⅜ inch wide piece of hook tape (scratchy side) onto the fabric for each Apple. This will need to be at the center of each Apple. Check there is enough space for all Apple pieces. Stitch around each hook piece.
3.10Place Apples onto right side of spare fabric with hook tape at the center back. Stitch all the way around and cut out so they are double sided.
3.11If you have used fusible webbing, peel the paper backing off each of the Flower pieces.
OPTIONAL: If you are using hook and loop (pictured), stitch a small strip of hook tape onto the spare fabric.
Iron/glue/place 2x Center Flowers onto 2x Flowers and stitch around.
3.12Place each of the 2x Flowers onto the spare fabric. Iron/glue/place and stitch all the way around each one.
Cut out so you have 2x double-sided Flowers.
Skip to step 1.15 if you are using hook and loop tape.
3.13OPTIONAL: If you are using buttons, stitch a buttonhole in the approximate center of each Flower.
If you are using snaps (pictured), attach the male part of the snap to the approximate center of each Flower, using the manufacturer’s instructions.
NOTE – If you aren’t sure which is the male / female part of the snap, just make sure each of the Flowers have the same side of the snap attached, and in the next step that the matching parts go on the Block.
3.14Decide where you would like each of the Flowers on the Block (or use the pattern markings).
If you are using buttons, stitch a button where you want each Flower to go.
If you are using snaps, iron a small scrap of interfacing (regular interfacing, not double-sided) to the back of where each Flowers will go. Then attach the female part of the snap, using the manufacturer’s instructions.
3.15Button, snap or place the Flowers onto the Block.
3.16Iron/glue/place Shirt Decoration onto Shirt and stitch.
3.17Iron/glue/place Front Skirt onto Girl and place Girl onto spare fabric.
Stitch all the way around Skirt and cut.
NOTE – Take care not to cut the Girl as you cut around the Skirt.
3.18OPTIONAL: If you want the Girl to be able to ‘stick’ to other felt items such as the House, we will stitch a small piece of hook tape to the back of her Shirt.
Place the Girl onto the spare fabric – this will become the back of the Shirt. Work out approximately the center of the Shirt. Stitch a small piece of hook tape (scratchy side) approximately ½ inch wide to the back of the center of the Girl.
Iron/glue/place Front Shirt onto Girl and place Girl onto spare fabric. Stitch all the way around Shirt and cut.
NOTE – Take care not to cut the Girl as you cut around the Shirt.
3.19OPTIONAL: Machine or hand stitch any desired details such as eyes or mouth.
Iron/glue/place Front Hair and Bow onto Front Hair and stitch around Bow.
Place Girl onto spare fabric. Stitch all the way around head and hair and cut.
NOTE – Take care not to cut the Girl as you cut around the head.
3.20Place the Girl onto the House. Block 1 is finished!
4 . BLOCK 2 – Knight4.0The Knight Block consists of a Horse, Knight, Sword and Grass.
4.1If you have used fusible webbing, peel the paper backing off of the Saddle and Horse pieces.
The block will be assembled as per the line drawing here.
4.2Iron/glue/place the Horse Hair and Horse Tail pieces onto the spare fabric.
Stitch around and cut each piece so they are double sided.
4.3Place the Horse onto the right side of the spare fabric. Turn it over and find the center of the body. Stitch a ¾ – 1 inch long piece of hook (scratchy side) to the back of the center of the ‘body’.
4.4Place the Horse Hair and Horse Tail pieces onto the spare fabric underneath the Horse, overlapping the Horse by approximately ¼ inch.
Place the ends of the Rein under the Horse at the neck, making sure the Horse overlaps by approximately ¼ inch.
Iron/glue/place the Horse in place.
Stitch all the way around and cut out so it is double sided.
NOTE – Take care not to cut the Horse Hair, Tail and Rein as you cut around the Horse.
Flip the Rein over the Horse head.
OPTIONAL: Machine or hand stitch any decorative detail you want to add to the Horse.
4.5Iron/glue/place the Harness pieces on Horse.
OPTIONAL – Place the Horse onto a spare piece of fabric for the Harness to make it double sided.
Stitch Harness.
If you have made the Harness double sided, cut the spare fabric off the Horse.
4.6Iron/glue/place the Saddle onto the Horse and stitch it, leaving the top straight edge open to for sliding the Knight into the Saddle.
4.7Peel off the paper backing from the Grass pieces.
Iron/glue/place the Grass as per the pattern markings. Stitch them to the Block.
Place the Horse onto the Block at the pattern markings so you can find the place for the loop tape (furry side) of the Horse.
Stitch loop tape to the Block.
4.8If you have used fusible webbing, peel the paper backing off the Sword.
Iron/glue/place the Sword onto the spare fabric. Stitch it around and cut so it is double sided.
OPTIONAL: If you want the Sword to be able to ‘stick’ to other felt items such as the Knight, we will stitch a small strip of hook tape (scratchy side) to the back of the Hilt.
Place the Hilt onto the spare fabric that will become the other side of it. Work out approximately the center of the Hilt. Stitch a narrow piece of hook (scratchy side) approximately ⅛ inch wide to the back of the center of the Hilt.
4.9Place the Sword onto the spare fabric for the Hilt so it overlaps onto the fabric by approximately ¼ inch.
Then place the Sword on top so it butts up against the edge of the fabric and overlaps the Hilt by approximately ¼ inch.
Iron/glue/place the Sword in place.
Stitch all the way around the Hilt. Cut it out so the Hilt is double sided.
NOTE – Take care not to cut the Sword as you cut around the Hilt.
4.10Iron/glue/place the Plume onto the spare fabric. Stitch it around, then cut out so it is double sided.
4.11Iron/glue/place the Helmet Top and Bottom onto the head of the Knight.
Stitch the curved inner edges only.
4.12Iron/glue/place the Knight Suit onto the Knight.
Stitch the neckline only.
4.13Lift the Helmet Top. Place the Plume onto the head so it overlaps onto the fabric by approximately ¼ inch. Sandwich it between the head and Helmet Top.
4.14Place the Knight onto the spare fabric that will become the other side of it. Work out approximately the center of the body. Stitch a piece of hook tape (scratchy side) approximately ¾ – 1 inch wide to the back of the center of the Knight.
OPTIONAL: Machine or hand stitch any decorative detail you want to add to the Knight.
Iron/glue/place the Knight onto the spare fabric.
Stitch all the way around and cut out so it is double sided.
NOTE – Take care not to cut the Plume or the hands as you cut around the Knight.
4.15Place Knight onto the Block as per the pattern markings to find the place for the loop tape.
Stitch loop tape onto Block.
4.16Place the Knight and Horse onto the Block. Block 2 is finished!
5 . BLOCK 3 – Witches House5.0The Witches House is surrounded by Vines and a Ladder. The Door can be opened and the Cat and Witch can be moved around the mat.
5.1If you have used fusible webbing, peel the paper backing off all pieces.
The Block will be assembled as per the line drawing here.
5.2Iron/glue/place the House and the Roof in place as per the pattern markings. Stitch around both pieces.
Iron/glue/place and stitch the Path in place.
Iron/glue/place and stitch the Interior Door in place.
5.3Place Door onto the spare fabric. Iron/glue/place and stitch all the way around.
OPTIONAL: Add decorative stitches to Door. If you would like to achieve the look we have created, start at the top edge using a regular straight stitch and stitch vertical lines.
Cut out so you have a double sided Door.
5.4Place the Door onto the House as per the pattern markings.
Stitch only the bottom straight edge of the Door, so that it can be opened down.
5.5Iron/glue/place the Side Rails onto the block as per the pattern markings. Stitch them all around.
Iron/glue/place the Rungs on top of the Side Rails. Stitch them all around.
5.6Iron/glue/place the Vine Trunks in place as per the pattern markings. Stitch them around.
5.7Iron/glue/place Leaves onto the Trunks. Stitch them on.
OPTIONAL: If you want the Witch to be able to ‘stick’ to the block, stitch a piece of loop tape (furry side) next to the Path as desired.
5.8OPTIONAL: If you want the Cat to be able to ‘stick’ to other felt items such as the House or Path, you will stitch a small strip of hook tape to the back.
Place the Cat onto the spare fabric that will become the other side of it. Work out approximately the center of the body. Stitch a ½ to ¾ inch long piece of hook tape (scratchy side) to the back of the center of the ‘body’.
NOTE – If you are not using felt for the Block fabric, a small strip of loop tape will need to be stitched where you would like the Cat to be on the Block.
5.9Iron/glue/place the Cat onto the spare fabric.
If desired, hand or machine stitch detail such as eyes and a mouth.
Stitch all the way around. Cut it out so it is double sided.
5.10OPTIONAL: If you want the Broom to be able to ‘stick’ to other felt items such as the Witch or her House, we will stitch a small strip of hook tape to the back of the Broom Stick.
Place hook tape onto the spare fabric that will become the other side of it. Work out approximately the center of the Broomstick. Stitch a narrow piece of hook tape (scratchy side) approximately ⅛ inch wide to the back of the Broom Stick.
Iron/glue/place the Broom Stick to spare fabric. Stitch it around then cut out, so it is double sided.
5.11Place the Broom Stick onto the spare fabric for the Broom so it overlaps onto the fabric by approximately ¼ inch.
Then place the Broom on top so it butts up against the edge of the fabric and overlaps the Broom Stick by approximately ¼ inch.
Iron/glue/place the Broom in place.
Stitch the outer curvy edge of the Broom. Cut it out so it is double sided.
NOTE – Take care not to cut the Broom Stick as you cut around the Broom.
OPTIONAL Bristles: From the straight edge, cut ½ inch in length and ¼ inch apart to create the bristles of the Broom.
Alternatively, use the pattern markings and stitch the Bristles in place. This may be better to do if you are have younger children playing with the pieces.
5.12Iron/glue/place Hat Ribbon onto Hat and stitch.
Iron/glue/place Hat Buckle onto Hat Ribbon and stitch.
5.13OPTIONAL: If you want the Witch to be able to ‘stick’ to other felt items such as the block, we will stitch a small strip of hook tape to the back of it.
Place hook tape onto the spare fabric that will become the other side of it. Work out approximately the center of the Witch. Stitch a narrow piece of hook tape (scratchy side) approximately 1 inch wide to the back of the Witch.
Iron/glue/place Hat and Dress onto Witch.
5.14If desired, hand or machine stitch detail such as eyes and a mouth.
Iron/glue/place Witch onto spare fabric. Stitch all around the dress. Cut around Witch.
NOTE – Take care not to cut into the hands.
5.15Place the Cat, Witch and Broom onto the Block. Block 3 is finished!
6 . BLOCK 4 – Dragon Lair6.0This Block consists of a Lair, Fire, Rocks, hidden Treasure and a Dragon. The Dragon and Treasure can be moved around the mat.
6.1If you have used fusible webbing, peel the paper backing off each of the pieces.
The block will be assembled as per the line drawing here.
6.2Iron/glue/place the Exterior Lair onto Block 4 as per the pattern markings.
Stitch all around.
6.3Iron/glue/place the Interior Lair onto the Exterior Lair as per the pattern markings.
Stitch all around.
6.4Place the first Log piece in place as per the pattern markings. Iron/glue/place then stitch all around.
6.5Place the second Log over the first Log as per the pattern markings. Iron/glue/place then stitch all around.
6.6Place the Big Fire on top of the Logs as per the pattern markings. Iron/glue/place then stitch in place.
6.7Place the Small Fire piece onto the Big Fire as per the pattern markings. Iron/glue/place then stitch in place.
6.8Iron/glue/place the Big Rock onto the spare fabric and stitch only the top edge.
Cut around it so it is double sided.
6.9Iron/glue/place the Big Rock onto Block 4 as per the pattern markings. Stitch the other three sides, creating a pocket to hide the Treasure in.
6.10Iron/glue/ place the other Small Rocks as per the pattern markings. Stitch all around.
6.11OPTIONAL: If you want the Treasure pieces to be able to ‘stick’ to other felt items such as the Rock, we will stitch a small piece of hook tape to the back of each Treasure.
For each Treasure, place it onto the spare fabric that will become the other side of it. Work out approximately the center of the Treasure. Stitch a piece of hook tape (scratchy side) approximately the size of the Treasure to the back of the center of the Treasure.
Then place the Treasure pieces onto the spare fabric.
Iron/glue/place and stitch all the way around. Cut each one out so they are double sided.
6.12OPTIONAL: If you want the Dragon to be able to ‘stick’ to other felt items such as the Lair, we will stitch a small strip of hook tape to the back of it.
Place the Dragon body onto the spare fabric that will become the other side of it. Work out approximately the center of the body and the tail. Stitch two narrow pieces of hook tape (scratchy side) approximately ½ inch wide to the back of the neck and the tail.
Place the Dragon Horns onto the spare fabric. Iron/glue/place then stitch around it. Cut.
Place the Dragon onto the spare fabric. Iron/glue/place then stitch around it.
Iron/glue/place the Dragon Horns onto each side of the Dragon. Stitch around each one.
OPTIONAL: Machine or hand stitch any desired details onto the Dragon such as nostrils, eyes or mouth, tummy, wings and legs.
Cut around the Dragon so you have one double sided Dragon.
NOTE – Take care not to cut into the Dragon Horns while cutting.
6.13If you want the Dragon Fire to be able to ‘stick’ to other felt items such as the Lair, we will stitch a small strip of hook tape to the back of it.
Place the Dragon Fire piece onto the spare fabric that will become the other side of it. Work out approximately the center of the Fire. Stitch a narrow piece of hook tape (scratchy side) approximately ⅛ inch wide to the back of the center of the Fire.
Place the Dragon Fire onto the spare fabric. Iron/glue/place then stitch around it.
Cut around the Dragon Fire so that it is double sided.
6.14Place the Dragon, Fire and Treasure onto the Block. Block 4 is finished!
7 . BLOCK 5 – Castle7.0This Block has a Castle with Towers and a Flag. There are removable Flowers and a Queen to reign over the kingdom.
7.1If you have used fusible webbing, peel the paper backing off each of the Castle, Big Towers, Higher Tower, Turret pieces.
The Block will be assembled as per the line drawing here.
7.2Place the Big Towers and Higher Tower onto the right side of Block 5, as per the pattern markings.
Iron/glue/place, then stitch around.
Place the Castle as per the pattern markings. Iron/glue/place, then stitch around.
7.3Iron/glue/place the Turrets and the Flag Pole as per the pattern markings. The Flag Pole is placed ⅛ – ¼ inch under the middle Turret. Stitch them around.
Iron/glue/place the Flag onto the Flag Pole and stitch.
7.4Peel the paper backing off the Small and Big Windows. Place them onto the Castle and Towers as per the pattern markings.
Iron/glue/place, then stitch them in place.
Place the Door Interior onto the Castle as per the pattern markings.
Iron/glue/place, then stitch them in place.
7.5Iron/glue/place each of the Gate Locker pieces onto the spare fabric.
Stitch around. Then cut around so they are double sided.
7.6Iron/glue/place the Left and the Right Gate pieces onto the spare fabric.
Stitch all the way around and cut out so they are double sided.
7.7Place the shorter Gate Locker onto the Left Gate as per the pattern markings. Stitch only the short edges of the Left Gate Locker, so the Right Gate Locker can slip behind Left Gate Locker.
Place the longer Gate Locker onto the Right Gate as per the pattern markings. Stitch only the short side that is on the Right Gate, as per the pattern markings.
7.8Place the Gate pieces onto the Castle as per the pattern markings.
7.9Stitch only the outer straight edges, so that the Gate can open.
7.10If you have used fusible webbing, peel the paper backing off each of the Flower pieces.
OPTIONAL: If you are using hook and loop (pictured), stitch a small strip of hook tape onto the spare fabric.
Iron/glue/place 2x Center Flowers onto 2x Flowers and stitch around.
7.11Place each of the 4x Flowers onto the spare fabric. Iron/glue/place and stitch all the way around each Flower.
Cut out so you have 4x double-sided Flowers.
7.12OPTIONAL: If you are using buttons, stitch a buttonhole in the approximate center of each Flower.
If you are using snaps, attach the male part of the snap to the approximate center of each Flower.
NOTE – If you aren’t sure which is the male / female part of the snap, just make sure each of the Flowers have the same side of the snap attached, and in the next step that the matching parts go on the Block.
If you are using buttons, stitch a button at the pattern markings.
If you are using snaps, iron a small scrap of interfacing (regular interfacing, not double-sided) to the back of where each Flowers will go. Then attach the female part of the snap.
If you are using hook and loop, put the Flower Center in place and stitch all around.
7.13Button, snap or place the Flowers into place.
7.14If you want the Queen to be able to ‘stick’ to other felt items such as the Castle, we will stitch a small strip of hook tape to the back of it.
Work out approximately the center of the Back Hair. Stitch a narrow piece of hook tape (scratchy side) approximately ½ inch wide to the back of the center of the Hair.
7.15Iron/glue/place Front Skirt onto Queen. Place Queen onto the spare fabric. Stitch around it.
NOTE – This spare fabric is going to be the Back Skirt.
Cut around so the Queen is double sided.
NOTE – Take care not to cut into Queen when you cut out the back skirt.
7.16OPTIONAL: Machine or hand stitch features onto the Queen such as eyes, mouth or necklace.
7.17Iron/glue/place Back Hair onto the back of the Queen’s head.
Iron/glue/place Dress as per pattern markings and stitch across the top straight edge of the Dress and at the sides of the head.
TIP – If you are using contrasting fabrics, stitch separately using different colored thread to match the pieces.
7.18Iron/glue/place the Front Hair, then the Crown onto head at the pattern markings. Stitch around them and the head.
7.19Place the Queen onto the Block. Block 5 is finished!
8 . BLOCK 6 – Gingerbread House8.0The Gingerbread House can be decorated with removable colorful Cookies. The Oven can be opened and the Gingerbread Man can be moved around the mat.
8.1If you have used fusible webbing, peel the paper backing off the Oven, Oven Interior, Oven Door, Knobs and Oven Cookies.
The Block will be assembled as per the line drawing here.
8.2Iron/glue/place the Oven onto the Interior at the pattern markings. Stitch it around.
8.3Iron/glue/place Oven Interior and Knobs onto the Oven as per the pattern markings. Stitch them around.
8.4Iron/glue/place the Oven Cookies onto the Oven Interior as per the pattern markings. Stitch them around.
8.5Place the Oven Door onto the Oven. Stitch only the bottom edge, so the Oven Door can be opened.
8.6If you have used fusible webbing, peel the paper backing off the House, Roof, Chimney, Window and Door.
Iron/glue/place House onto Block as per the pattern markings. Stitch all around.
8.7OPTIONAL: If you would like to secure the Roof Cookies add loop tape to the Roof. Cut 6x small loop tape pieces and stitch to the Roof.
Iron/glue/place the Chimney to the House as per the pattern markings. Slip the Chimney about ¼ – ⅛ inch under the Roof.
Iron/glue/place the Roof onto the House as per the pattern markings.
Stitch them around.
8.8OPTIONAL: If you want the Roof Cookies to be able to ‘stick’ to other felt items such as the House, we will stitch a small strip of hook tape to the back of them.
Place the Roof Cookie pieces onto the spare fabric that will become the other side of it. Work out approximately the center of the cookies. Stitch a tiny piece of hook tape (scratchy side) approximately the size of the Cookies.
8.9Place the Roof Cookies onto the spare fabric. Iron/glue/place then stitch around them.
Cut around the Roof Cookies so you have six double sided Roof Cookies.
8.10Iron/glue/place the Interior to the House and stitch it around.
8.11Iron/glue/place the Window to the House and stitch it around.
8.12Iron/glue/place the Door onto the spare fabric.
Stitch it all around. Cut so it is double sided.
Place the Door onto the Interior. Stitch only the left edge so the Door can be opened.
8.13Cut the red Candy Cane as per the pattern markings.
Iron/glue/place all the odd pieces (first, third, fifth etc.) onto one white Candy Cane. Repeat with the even pieces (second, fourth, sixth etc.) on the mirror white Candy Cane piece.
Iron/glue/place the two Candy Canes onto the House at the pattern markings.
Stitch them around.
8.14OPTIONAL: If you want the Gingerbread Man to be able to ‘stick’ to the block, we will stitch a small strip of hook tape to the back of it and also to the block.
Stitch some loop tape onto the Block fabric at the pattern markings for the Gingerbread Man.
Place the Gingerbread Man onto the spare fabric that will become the other side of it. Work out approximately the center of the body. Stitch a narrow piece of hook tape (scratchy side) approximately ½ inch wide to the back of the center of the body.
OPTIONAL: Machine or hand stitch any desired details onto the Gingerbread man, such as eyes, mouth, buttons.
Place the Gingerbread man onto the spare fabric. Iron/glue/place then stitch around it.
Cut around the Gingerbread man so you that it is double sided.
8.15Block 6 is finished!
9 . BLOCK 7 – Chariot9.0This Block consists of a Chariot and a Horse. The Princess can be placed inside the Chariot and moved around the mat.
9.1If you have used fusible webbing, peel the paper backing off each of the pieces.

9.2Iron/glue/place Heart onto Door and stitch around.
Iron/glue/place the Door onto the spare fabric.
Stitch the top edge only. Cut around the Door so you have one double sided Door.
9.3Iron/glue/place the Door, Interior and Windows onto Chariot as per pattern markings.
Stitch around Interior and Windows. Stitch only the bottom curve of the Door.
9.4Iron/glue/place the Chariot and Crown onto the Block as per pattern markings, overlapping the Crown by approximately ¼ inch.
Stitch around Chariot and Crown.
9.5Iron/glue/place the Crown Jewels onto the Crown as per the pattern markings. Stitch them around.
9.6Iron/glue/place the Wheels onto the Chariot as per the pattern markings. Stitch them around or in spiral.
9.7Iron/glue/place Horse Tail and Horse Hair at the pattern markings. Stitch them all around.
Iron/glue/place Horse at pattern markings, overlapping Tail and Hair. Stitch it all around.
9.8Iron/glue/place the Harness onto Horse at the pattern markings. Stitch it in place.
9.9Iron/glue/place Horse Saddle and stitch it around.
9.10Iron/glue/place Horse Hinge onto Chariot and Horse as per the pattern markings. Stitch it all around.
OPTIONAL: Machine or hand stitch any desired details onto the Horse such as eye or reins.
9.11OPTIONAL: If you want the Princess to be able to ‘stick’ to the Block, we will stitch a small piece of hook tape to the back of it and also to the Block.
Place the Princess onto the spare fabric that will become the other side of it. Work out approximately the center of the body. Stitch a piece of hook tape (scratchy side) approximately ½ to ¾ inch wide to the back of the center of the body.
9.12Iron/glue/place Skirt onto Princess. Stitch the top edge only.
Iron/glue/place Front Hair onto Princess and stitch only the bottom curvy edge.
9.13Place the Princess onto the spare fabric with the hook tape on it.
Iron/glue/place then stitch around the arms.
Cut out the Princess so she is double sided.
9.14Iron/glue/place Front Dress onto Princess. Place Princess onto the spare fabric for the Back Skirt.
Stitch around the dress.
OPTIONAL: Machine or hand stitch eyes and mouth.
9.15Place the Princess onto the spare fabric for the Back Hair.
Stitch around the head and hair.
Cut out the Princess so she is double sided.
9.16Iron/glue/place the Dress Bustle onto the Princess at the pattern markings.
Stitch the top straight edges.
9.17Place the Princess inside the Chariot. Block 7 is finished!
10 . BLOCK 8 – Vegetable Garden10.0The Vegetable Garden consists of three layers of Earth. There are three Carrots which can be moved around the mat. There are also three Melons and three Pumpkins.
10.1If you have used fusible webbing, peel the paper backing off each of the pieces except the Carrots and Carrot Tops.
The Block will be assembled as per the line drawing here.
10.2Iron/glue/place an Earth Layer onto the spare fabric.
Stitch the wavy top edge only, then cut it out so it is double sided.
Repeat for the other two Earth Layers so that you have three double sided layers.
10.3Place 3x Earth Layers onto Block 8 as per the pattern markings.
Stitch along the two straight sides and the bottom edges, leaving the top wavy edge open.
OPTIONAL: You can stitch vertical lines between the lumps if you want to divide the Earth Layer.
10.4For each Carrot Top, iron/glue/place the Carrot Top onto the spare fabric. Stitch around leaving the bottom straight edge. Cut out so it is double sided.
OPTIONAL: If you want the Carrots to be able to ‘stick’ to other felt items such as the Earth Layers, we will stitch a small strip of hook tape to the back of each Carrot.
For each Carrot, place it onto the spare fabric that will become the other side of it. Work out approximately the center of the Carrot. Stitch a narrow piece of hook tape (scratchy side) approximately ⅛ inch wide to the back of the center of the Carrot.
10.5For each Carrot, place the Carrot Top onto the spare fabric for the Carrots so it overlaps onto the fabric by approximately ¼ inch.
Then place the Carrot on top so it butts up against the edge of the fabric and overlaps the Carrot Top by approximately ¼ inch.
Iron/glue/place the Carrots in place.
Stitch all the way around and cut out so it is double sided.
NOTE – Take care not to cut the Carrot Top as you cut around the Carrot.
OPTIONAL: Machine or hand stitch any decorative detail you want to add to the Carrot.
10.6OPTIONAL: If you want the Pumpkins to be able to ‘stick’ to other felt items such as the Earth Layers, we will stitch a small strip of hook tape to the back of each Pumpkins.
For each Pumpkin, place it onto the spare fabric that will become the other side of it. Work out approximately the center of the Pumpkin. Stitch a narrow piece of hook tape (scratchy side) approximately ⅛ inch wide to the back of the center of the Pumpkin.
10.7Iron/glue/place a Pumpkin onto the spare fabric.
NOTE – Make sure there is enough space for the Leaf above the Pumpkin.
Stitch all the way around.
10.8Place the Leaf on the top of the double sided Pumpkin, overlapping the Pumpkin by approximately ¼ inch.
Stitch around.
Cut around the Pumpkin.
Repeat steps 10.7 to 10.8 for each Pumpkin.
10.9OPTIONAL: If you want the Melons to be able to ‘stick’ to other felt items such as the Earth Layers, we will stitch a small strip of hook tape to the back of each Melons.
For each Melon, place it onto the spare fabric that will become the other side of it. Work out approximately the center of the Melon. Stitch a narrow piece of hook tape (scratchy side) approximately ⅛ inch wide to the back of the center of the Melon.
Place the Melon onto the spare fabric. Stitch all the way around.
Cut out so it is double sided.
10.10OPTIONAL: Machine or hand stitch any decorative detail you want to add to the Melon.
Repeat steps 8.9 to 8.10 for each Melon.
10.11Place all the Vegetables inside the Soil. Block 8 is finished!
11 . BLOCK 9 – Frog Prince11.0This Block consists of three Water Lilies and a Frog Prince sitting on a Big Lily pad. The Frog Prince is reversible – one side is the Prince, the other side if the Frog.
11.1If you have used fusible webbing, peel the paper backing off each of the pieces for Lily Pads and Flowers.
The block will be assembled as per the line drawing here.
11.2Iron/glue/place 3x Lily Pads at the pattern markings. Stitch all the way around each one.
OPTIONAL: Machine or hand stitch any decorative detail you want to add to the Lily Pads.
11.3Iron/glue/place the Frog Lily Pad onto the Block as per the pattern markings. Stitch it all around.
OPTIONAL: Machine or hand stitch any decorative detail you want to add to the Frog Lily Pad.
11.4Iron/glue/place the Flowers onto the Lily Pads as per the pattern markings. Stitch them all around.
11.5If you have used fusible webbing, peel the paper backing off each of the pieces except the Prince Head and Cape.
Iron/glue/place the Crown onto the spare fabric. Stitch the outer edges only, then cut out so it is double sided.
OPTIONAL: If you want the Frog to be able to ‘stick’ to the Frog Lily Pad, cut the Prince Shirt out of hook tape (scratchy side).
Iron/glue/place the Prince Hair onto the Head.
Stitch only the bottom curvy edge of the Hair to the Head.
11.6Iron/glue/place Prince Shirt (fabric/hook tape) and Prince Pants onto the Prince Cape. Stitch them all around.
Iron/glue/place the Prince Hands onto the Prince Cape. Stitch them around.
OPTIONAL: Machine or hand stitch any desired details onto the Prince, such as eyes, mouth, arms.
11.7If you have used fusible webbing, peel the paper backing off the Prince Head and Cape.
Place the Crown onto the spare fabric for the Frog so it overlaps onto the fabric by approximately ¼ inch.
Then place the Prince Head on top so it butts up against the edge of the fabric and overlaps the Crown by approximately ¼ inch.
Iron/glue/place the Head in place.
Place the Cape onto the spare fabric so that it butts up against the Prince Head.
Place the Prince Legs under the Cape so it overlaps the Legs by approximately ¼ inch.
Iron/glue/place the Cape.
Stitch all the way around and cut out so it is double sided.
NOTE – Take care not to cut the Crown and Legs as you cut around the Frog Prince.
NOTE – The bobbin thread you use when stitching the Prince will be visible on the Frog.
11.8OPTIONAL: Iron/glue/place the Eyes onto the Frog side and hand stitch the Pupils.
11.9Place the Frog Prince onto the Block. Block 9 is finished!
12 . SEA BORDER – Creatures12.0The Sea Border has a Mermaid, Whale, Seahorses and Fish.
12.1OPTIONAL: If you want the Mermaid to be able to ‘stick’ to the block, we will stitch a small strip of hook tape to the back of it and also to the block.
Stitch some loop tape (furry side) onto the Block fabric where you want the Mermaid to be.
Place the Mermaid onto the spare fabric that will become the other side of it. Work out approximately the center of the body. Stitch a narrow piece of hook tape (scratchy side) approximately ½ inch wide to the back of the center of the body.
12.2Iron/glue/place the Front Hair onto the Mermaid. Stitch along the bottom curvy edge of the Hair.
Iron/glue/place the Mermaid onto the spare fabric and stitch around the head and body.
Cut out Mermaid.
NOTE – Take care not to cut the Hair as you cut around the body.
12.3Place the Mermaid onto the spare fabric for the Tail so it overlaps onto the fabric by approximately ¼ inch.
Then place the Tail on so it overlaps the Mermaid by approximately ¼ inch.
Iron/glue/place the Tail in place.
Stitch all the way around and cut out so it is double sided.
NOTE – Take care not to cut the Mermaid as you cut around the Tail.
OPTIONAL: Machine or hand stitch any decorative detail you want to add to the Mermaid such as eyes, nose, mouth.
12.4Iron/glue/place Mermaid onto the spare fabric for the Hair.
Stitch all the way around and cut out so it is double sided.
NOTE – Take care not to cut the Mermaid as you cut around the Hair.
12.5OPTIONAL: If you want the Fish to be able to ‘stick’ to the Block, we will stitch a small strip of hook tape to the back of them and also to the Block.
Place the Fish onto the spare fabric that will become the other side of it. Work out approximately the center of the body. Stitch a narrow piece of hook tape (scratchy side) approximately ¼ inch wide to the back of the center of the body.
12.6Iron/glue/place the Fish onto the spare fabric. Stitch all around and cut so you have a double sided Fish.
OPTIONAL: Machine or hand stitch any decorative detail you want to add to the Fish.
Repeat steps 13.5 to 13.6 for each Fish.
12.7OPTIONAL: If you want the Seahorses to be able to ‘stick’ to the Block, we will stitch a small strip of hook tape to the back of them and loop tape to the Block.
Place the Manes and Flippers onto spare fabric and stitch all around.
Cut around so you have double sided pieces.
12.8Place the Manes and Flipper onto the spare fabric so it overlaps onto the fabric by approximately ¼ inch.
Then place the Seahorse on top so it butts up against the edge of the fabric and overlaps the Manes and Flipper by approximately ¼ inch.
Iron/glue/place the Seahorse in place.
Stitch all the way around and cut out so it is double sided.
NOTE – Take care not to cut the Manes or Flipper as you cut around the Seahorse.
OPTIONAL: Machine or hand stitch any decorative details and the eyes and pupils you want to add to the Seahorse.
Repeat steps 13.7 to 13.8 for each Seahorse.
12.9OPTIONAL: Cut a piece of embroidery floss/string/thread 3-4 inches long. We have used four pieces. You can use this to create the water spouting out of the Whale.
OPTIONAL: If you want the Whale to be able to ‘stick’ to the block, we will stitch a small strip of hook tape to the back of the Whale and loop tape to the Block.
Place the Whale onto the spare fabric that will become the other side of it. Work out approximately the center of the body. Stitch a narrow piece of hook tape (scratchy side) approximately ¼ inch wide to the back of the center of the body.
Place the strands of embroidery cotton onto the right side of the spare fabric.
12.10Place the Whale onto the spare fabric, sandwiching the threads. Place the Whale Belly onto the Whale. Stitch all around. Cut it around so it is double sided.
OPTIONAL: Machine or hand stitch any decorative detail you want to add to the Whale.

1 . Blocks Assembly1.0Repeat the following steps Blocks 1 to 9.
1.1Place the Main Block and Block Lining pieces right sides together. Pin all outer edges.
1.2Stitch using a ¼ inch seam allowance.
NOTE – Do not leave any gaps for turning. You will be creating a hole in the Block Lining in step 1.5.
1.3Clip the corners to reduce bulk, being careful not to clip into or too close to the stitching.
Either use pinking shears to trim the seam allowance or trim the seam allowance with regular fabric scissors to neaten and then clip the curves so it turns through nicely.
1.4Carefully pull the Block Lining away from the Main Block and any decorations if added.
1.5Clip a hole approximately in the center of the Block Lining piece only. For the bigger Block pieces, your hole should be approximately 2-3 inches. For the smaller Block pieces, it will be less.
NOTE – Take care not to clip the fabric or any optional decorations. Also take care not to clip within ½ inch of any stitching.
1.6Turn the Block through the hole you just made.
1.7Use a blunt object such as a point turner, knitting needle or chopstick to poke through any pointy edges of the block.
Carefully roll the seams on the edges so that the seam line is directly in the middle of the edge. This way the lining will not show from the right side.
Press.
2 . Borders Assembly2.0Repeat the following steps for Borders A to F.
2.1Place the Main Border and Border Lining pieces right sides together. Pin.
2.2For Border piece A, C, D and F, stitch the curved edge using a ¼ inch seam allowance. Do not stitch the two short edges or the straight long side.
For the long Border pieces B and E, stitch the curvy long side using a ¼ inch seam allowance. Do not stitch the two short edges or the other long side.
2.3Either use pinking shears to trim the seam allowance or trim the seam allowance with regular fabric scissors to neaten and then clip the curves so it turns through nicely.
Clip into the seam allowances to reduce bulk. Take care not to clip too close to the stitching.
Turn the Border pieces right sides out.
2.4Use a blunt object such as a point turner, knitting needle or chopstick to poke through any pointy edges of the edge piece.
Carefully roll the seams on the edges so that the seam line is directly in the middle of the edge. This way the lining won’t show from the right side.
Press.
3 . Attach Blocks & Borders3.0Before proceeding with this step, lay your Border and Block pieces in place on your Playmat fabric. Check they all fit. Read through the steps below to get an idea of how it all assembles together.
3.1The Blocks will be assembled as per the line drawing here.
3.2Pin Border A to Border B Main to Main, Lining to Lining, matching seams.
Stitch using a ¼ inch seam allowance. Double check which side of Border B to stitch.
Press the seam allowance open.
3.3Stitch Border C to the other side of Border B right sides together using a ¼ inch seam allowance.
Press the seam open.
The top half of the Border is complete.
3.4Stitch Border D to Border E right sides together using a ¼ inch seam allowance.
Stitch Border F to Border E right sides together using a ¼ inch seam allowance.
Press the seam allowances open.
This is the bottom half of the Border.
3.5Stitch Border F to Border A right sides together using a ¼ inch seam allowance.
Stitch Border C to Border D right sides together using a ¼ inch seam allowance.
Press the seam allowance open.
3.6Lay the Playmat right side up. Place the Border right side facing up, matching raw edges. Pin.
Place each Block as per the pattern markings, right sides facing up. Pin.
Depending on how your pieces have pressed, you might need to adjust the position of the Blocks. Move around as desired and pin to secure.
3.7Stitch the outer edges of the Blocks and the inner edge of the Border to the Playmat fabric.
There are several options how to do this. Choose the look/method you prefer:
Slipstitch by hand (this is the most “invisible” option on the finished item)
3.8Iron/glue/place each of the Boat pieces as per the pattern marking. Stitch around.
Place the loop tape pieces onto the Border as per the pattern markings for each of the Sea Creatures. Stitch around.
Place the Sea Creatures onto the Border as per the pattern markings.
OPTIONAL: Machine or hand stitch any details you would like, such as hearts for Seahorses.
4 . Quilt4.0If you are an experienced quilter, quilt the Fairytale Playmat using your preferred method. Alternatively, follow below for how we have done it here.
4.1Place the Backing right side down on a flat surface. Make sure it is smoothed out flat.
4.2Place the Batting onto the Backing.
Make sure the Batting is smoothed flat and centered in the middle of the Backing.
The Backing should be bigger than the Batting by 1 inch on all sides.
4.3Place the finished Playmat fabric onto the Batting.
Make sure the Playmat fabric is smoothed flat and centered in the middle of the Batting.
The Batting should be bigger than the Playmat fabric by 1 inch on all sides.
4.4Pin all layers together.
You can use pins or safety pins to do this.
TIP – You can use curved quilting safety pins as they are easier to insert and get through the layers without moving them. It is also easier to handle the fabric and know you won’t get poked by a stray pin.
If you are using pins, take care to keep the layers in the same place (do not move them around, keep them aligned together how you had them in step 4.3).
Pin frequently through the Fairytale Playmat so that there are pins every few inches to hold it all together. There should be pins approximately every 3-5 inches throughout the Fairytale Playmat.
4.5Now we need to quilt the mat together. You can either do this by hand or using a sewing machine.
If you are doing it by machine, stitch around all Blocks and the Border now. Remove all pins. Skip to step 5 for OPTIONAL Fastenings or step 6 to bind the edges.
If you are doing it by hand, thread a needle with a matching thread to your Playmat fabric. Tie the ends together in a knot.
TIP – A great way to get the ‘right’ side knot is to dampen your finger, then to wrap the thread around your index finger. Roll your finger and thumb together so the thread up rolls off your finger. Pull the thread taut to then create a knot.
4.6Working from the right side of the fabric, insert the needle 1-2 inches away from where you want to start. Bring it up where you want to start.
NOTE – If you catch a little of the Batting in the stitch it is less likely to pull through.
4.7Hold the fabric taut and gently pull the knot through the fabric.
It should “pop” through the fabric so that the knot is now inside the quilt.
If the knot comes all the way through the fabric and out again, tie the knot a second time so it is physically bigger. You want the knot small enough to get through inserting it into the quilt, but big enough to not automatically come out the other side.
4.8Thread the needle up and down through all layers with approximately ¼ inch between each stitch.
4.9Stitch all the way around each Block and the Border.
When you get to the end of your thread,
NOTE – To make it easy to see, we have photographed the knotting off process on a plain piece of fabric. You would use this every time your thread ran out as you sewed around the Blocks on the Playmat.
5 . OPTIONAL Fastenings5.0If you wish to be able to roll the Fairytale Playmat up and carry it around, follow these steps. Otherwise skip to step 6.
NOTE – Premade straps or webbing can be used in place of the fabric straps.
5.1Fold a Strap in half lengthwise, right sides together. Create a finger press by pressing the fold with your fingers on a hard surface so it makes a dent in the fabric. We will be using this foldline as a guide. You don’t need to Iron/glue/place it.
Open the Strap and lay it right side facing up.
Cut a piece of hook and loop tape (both the furry and the scratchy sides) approximately 1.5 inches long.
5.2We now want to center each piece onto the Strap, making sure we allow for seam allowances.
Mark ¼ inch in from the seam allowance on the long side of one end of the Strap.
Mark ¼ inch from the seam allowance diagonally opposite on the other end of the Strap.
5.3Place the hook tape (scratchy side) onto the fabric 1½ inches from the short raw edge.
Align it so it is centered between the foldline and the marking from step 5.2.
Stitch in place.
5.4Place the loop tape (furry side) onto the other end of the Strap, on the opposite side.
Align it so it is 1 ½ inch from the short raw edge, and centered between the foldline and the other mark from step 5.2.
Stitch in place.
5.5Fold the Strap in half lengthways, right sides together. Pin.
Stitch the short side (near the loop tape) and the long edge, using a ¼ inch seam allowance.
NOTE – Do not stitch the other end of the Strap with the hook (scratchy).
5.6Trim the corners to reduce bulk. Do not trim too close to the stitching.
5.7Turn the Strap through and press. Make sure the corners are poked through fully.
TIP – Use a point turner or a blunt pointy object such as a knitting needle or chopstick to poke them through fully.
5.8OPTIONAL: Topstitch the Strap using a ⅛ inch seam allowance, leaving the short open edge.
Repeat steps 5.1 to 5.7 to create the second Strap.
You should now have 2x Straps, with the hook part near the open short edge on one side of the Strap, and the loop part near the stitched short edge on the other side of the Strap.
5.9Fold the Handle in half lengthways, right sides together. Pin the bottom edge.
Stitch along this long edge using a ¼ inch seam allowance.
5.10Turn the Handle right sides out. Press.
5.11OPTIONAL: Topstitch down both long sides using a ⅛ inch seam allowance.
If you want further decorative stitches, fold the Handle in half along its length, finger press, open back out and stitch down the center line. Then stitch again at the ¼ and ¾ points so there are five evenly spaced lines.
Alternatively, you could embroider, use fabric paint or cut & stitch felt your family name, or a child’s name onto the Handle. Remember to allow for ¼ inch seam allowances on either end with any decorative stitching.
5.12Lay the playmat right sides facing up. Take the bottom corner (Chariot Block) and fold it over to the top corner on the same side (Apple Cottage Block).
The Fairytale Playmat should now be folded with the foldline running away from the Apple Cottage away down the mat.
5.13When we fold up the mat, we will roll it from the Apple Cottage down the mat.
Do this now to get an idea of how it will be.
When you get to the other end, this is where we will attach the Straps. This should be directly opposite the Apple Cottage.
5.14Put a pin in the Fairytale Mat where the fold is on the edge still sticking out from the rolled up Fairytale Mat.
Unroll the Fairytale Mat again. Then measure in from the raw edge of the Batting, 3 inches and mark with a pin.
Measure in from the folded edge 3 inches and mark a pin.
5.15Lay the Straps with the raw edges matching the outer Border, and the Strap facing into the mat, centered over each pin from step 5.14.
NOTE – The hook part of the hook and loop should be at this end and facing UP.
Pin in place.
5.16Place each end of the Handle 4 ½ inches away from each Strap. Pin.
NOTE – Make sure the Handle is not twisted.
5.17For the ends of the Straps and Handles, stitch in place, making a ¾ -inch rectangle ¼ inch from the edge of each end. Stitch diagonally across to make an X in the middle for additional strength.
NOTE – This little rectangle gives extra strength to the Strap/Handle than just stitching or basting across the edge. It will be visible in the final Fairytale Playmat (on both the top and bottom of the mat). However, after having children carry the mat around with lots of various toys and treasures they had tucked away, I highly recommend going for the stronger option and doing the rectangle!
6 . Bind Edges6.0If you are an experienced quilter, bind the edges of the Fairytale Playmat in your preferred method. Alternatively, follow below for how we have done it here.
6.1Lay the Fairytale Playmat flat, right sides facing up.
If you have added the Handle and Straps, make sure they are laying into the playmat and are out of the way of the seam allowance.
6.2Starting with one long edge fold the Backing in half, wrong sides together. over onto the Batting.
6.3Fold the Batting over onto the playmat so that the part of the Backing you can see is approximately half the width of it.
Pin in place.
6.4Repeat step 6.3 with the parallel long edge.
6.5Repeat step 6.3 with the short edge.
When you get to the corners, you can either fold the Backing under diagonally, so the corners look ‘mitered’. Or you can keep it straight and just make sure any raw edges are tucked well inside.
6.6Repeat step 6.3 with the short edge where the Straps and Handle are.
NOTE – Make sure the Straps and Handle are flat and not twisted.
6.7Either machine or hand stitch along all sides, including in the corners to stitch it all in place.
Your Fairytale Playmat is all finished!
If you have added the Handle and Straps, follow to step 7 for instructions on how to roll up the playmat.
7 . Rolling the Mat Up7.0To use the Fairytale Playmat, lay it out flat and tuck the Straps & Handles underneath.
TIP – If you are using it on a carpet, make sure the loop (furry) side of the Straps are folded onto the hook (scratchy) side, so the hook part doesn’t get stuck to the carpet.
When you are ready to roll the playmat up, follow the steps below.
7.1Leave the Straps facing away from the playmat.
Fold the playmat in half right sides together along the long edge.
7.2Roll the Fairytale Mat over and over until you reach the Straps.
7.3Roll each Strap around the playmat in the same direction you’ve just rolled the playmat up in (so the Strap continues the rolling).
7.4Let each Strap fold over onto itself, so the hook and loop tape connect and secures the playmat as a roll.
Pick up the Fairytale Playmat by the Handle and you are ready to take it wherever you’d like. Your Fairytale Playmat is finished!

File Types
We have included three to four file types for you to choose from. Please choose whichever you are more familiar with or works best with your cutting machine. For cut files of the smaller pieces for some of our patterns, like the Dolls House Quiet Book and Add-on, we do not include a PDF copy. All versions come with .SVG, .PNG, and .DXF.
You will start by downloading the files from your account. Open your software and choose the file type you’d like to work with.
Pattern Cut Files
When working with cut files to cut small pattern pieces, it is imperative that you make sure the file is the correct size prior to cutting. We have included a one-inch square box offset in each file. You should be able to move the square off to the side, so it isn’t cut with the rest of your file. For files that also have square pieces, please be sure to compare them to the cut chart in the original file instructions. We’d always prefer you double check than have something cut out that isn’t useable!
Other Cut Files
For all other cut files, you should resize to your project needs. Please do keep in mind the size of some of the features. Going very small may make it difficult to cut smaller fonts or finer details.
Media
As mentioned earlier, it is very important to choose the correct media to for your cut. There is a huge selection to choose from and it can be overwhelming. Be sure to use the materials suggested by your machine for the type of project you are completing.

The Fairytale Playmat comes with lots of options and all kinds of interactive elements to play with, including dolls.
The mat has several blocks, each with its own unique fairytale story. It is easy to sew, especially if you use felt fabric and fusible webbing to create the decorations. It is not a quick sew but you will certainly enjoy the creative process. Use all the elements included or make changes to your style and unique story that you want to tell. The elements included are not only for the block they are associated with, but can be placed within different blocks when sewn.
Add the optional straps to roll the mat up and a handle to carry it with.

Materials and Tools
Main and Lining fabric – You will need any medium weight woven (non-stretch) fabric, such as quilting cotton, cotton, or poly cotton. Most people use a dark color for the Pathway. All the Blocks will be placed on top, leaving this exposed as the Pathway.
NOTE – If you are using light colored fabrics for your Blocks & Edges, use either the same fabric, or a plain fabric to line them with so that you cannot see the Pathway fabric underneath.
OPTIONAL Fairytale Block Fabrics – these are the fabrics for the decorations on each block. The edges of these are not finished so we recommend a non-fraying fabric such as felt. You will need assorted colors in scrap size. Many stores sell felt packs, or it is a great one to raid your stash for.
