Felt Crown and Wand

This felt crown and wand pattern makes an adorable dress up set for a child. The flower and leaf options mean you could create lots of different looks! The crown with just the leaves makes an excellent elf headpiece. Or add a variety of flowers for a gorgeous fairy crown!

There are 3 sizes of flowers and leaves. You can mix and match for different shapes & looks. We used the medium versions for tutorial. These are a great size for children 2-12 years. The large size will give a quite oversized effect. The smaller ones are far more delicate looking and are a great option for a baby’s crown

Please read the full instructions before getting started.

Wash, dry, and press your fabric before starting your project. A bit of prep now prevents shrinking and means your garment will stay the same size you made it.

Never leave a child or baby unattended or allow to sleep in a garment made from one of our patterns with ties, snaps, buttons, or anything they could remove, choke on, or get caught on. Always use caution if you are unsure. We love our patterns, but we love your bundles of joy more!

Size Range

Craft

Crown Base

• Felt – 1x sheet of green for the leaves
• Ribbon – 1 ½ to 2 yards. You will need this in 2 pieces. One piece will attach to either side of the crown base and then get tied at the back of the child’s head. For a 2 to 6-year-old child, you will need approximate 2x 30 inches. For a 7 to 12-year-old child, you will need approximately 2x 40 inches. 
• Elastic – Alternatively, instead of ribbon you could instead use ½ inch wide elastic (great for smaller children or babies 0-24 months). Head sizes vary but an approximate guide is:
  • 0-24 months – you will need approximately 6 inches
  • 2-6 years – you will need approximately 8 inches
  • 7-12 years – you will need approximately 10 inches

Flowers for Crown

• Assorted felt sheets – 4 to 5 colors. You could use any colors you liked. For the flowers in the photos we used 1 peach and 2 different pinks. The quantity you’ll need depends on how many flowers you make. For the crown in the cover photo we used 3x pieces approximately the size of a piece of A4 / US Letter paper.

Wand

• Felt
• Ribbon – about 40 inches, again we used grosgrain, but you could use any type of ribbon
• Small amount of fiber fill
• Embroidery floss or thread
• Assorted colored beads
• Wooden dowel (or for a magical look you could use a dowel sized stick from the garden)

You will also need:

• White/clear glue
• Threads to match

Tools needed are hand sewing needle, pins, scissors, ruler, or tape measure. A sewing machine and hot glue gun are optional.

Settings

The pattern is a separate download. Choose either the US letter paper, A4 paper, or A0 paper size based on the printer you wish to use. If you are in the US or Canada then your printer will likely use US letter paper. Other regions normally use A4 paper. Some people prefer to print their patterns at a print shop: A0 is best in this case.

Print at 100%.

On the second page, you will find a 1-inch and a 3-inch square test box. Print this page first, on its own, and measure these squares.

Once you are happy that the test box is accurate, print the rest of the pattern pages.

Cut each of the pieces according to the directions on the pattern piece. Seam allowances where needed are all included so just cut them as is.

You will find on the pattern pieces there are several sizes of flower and leaf. For the crown in the photos we used the medium size pattern pieces. There are also small and large. To vary the look you could use a combination of the pieces. 

We cut 1 Combined flower and 3 each of the Pompom and Rosette flowers when making the crown in the tutorial, but you could use any combination of the flowers available. We used 16 leaves, however if you are only adding leaves, you may want more leaves so that the crown base is completely covered and all you see is leaves.

Flower Types – 

Cutting Charts – All pattern pieces are included, however if you prefer to cut using a cutting chart, the dimensions for the rectangular pieces (in INCHES) are below: 

Cutting Checklist: 

Crown:

• Crown Base – Fabric cut 1 on fold
• Leaves – Fabric cut 16-35
  • NOTE – There are two leaf shapes. You can cut one or both and combine them. If you are making a Crown without flowers, you will need more leaves.
• Pompom Flower – Fabric cut 1 per flower
• Rosette Flower – Fabric cut 1 per flower
• Combined Flower Pompom – Fabric cut 1 per flower

Wand:

• Stars – Fabric cut 2

NOTE – To cut fabric on the fold, fold your fabric over parallel to the selvage edges. Align the pattern piece so it is on the fold of the fabric. Cut around the edges, leaving the fold. If you have folded your fabric correctly the fold will be parallel to the two edges of the fabric that are finished. The raw edges (e.g. the ones you could pick at and threads would come off) will be at a right angle to your fold.

To make a Crown with leaves and flowers – Follow steps 1-4 only
To make a Crown with just leaves – Follow step 4a only
To make the Wand – Follow step 5 only

Sewing –

1. POMPOM Flowers – Fold and sew the Pompom Flower piece length wise with ¼ inch seam allowance. Cut ¾ of the way down on folded side every ¼ inch (6mm). Roll the sewn edge tightly all the way to the other end and hand stitch or glue in place.
2. ROSETTE FLOWER – Starting with the inside part of the spiral of the rosette, fold to create a small half circle, and fold that half circle in half again creating a small ¼ circle. Tack using hand stitching (or hot glue). Continue wrapping the strand to create the rosette and hand stitch (or glue) as you go.
3. COMBINED FLOWER – Fold and sew the Combined Pompom Flower piece length wise with ¼ inch seam allowance. Cut ¾ of the way down on folded side every ¼ inch (6mm). Roll the sewn edge tightly all the way to the other end and hand stitch or glue in place. Wrap the rosette around pompom, hand stitch (or glue) as you wrap.
4. ASSEMBLE CROWN – Sew your ribbons (or elastic) to either end of the crown base by hand or with a sewing machine.  Randomly arrange leaves on crown base.  Stitch (or glue) in place. Arrange flowers as desired and hand stitch (or glue) in place.  
5. WAND – With wrong sides together, sew stars together with a ¼ inch seam allowance, leaving a small opening in one of the inside angles for the wooden dowel.  Stuff with fiber.  Using a blanket stitch, hand stitch around the star, leaving the gap open. Hand stitch beads to the star for some fun sparkle. Starting with a dot of glue at one end, wrap the ribbons around the dowel and attach with another drop of glue at the opposite end.  Insert in star and go!  

File Types

We have included three to four file types for you to choose from. Please choose whichever you are more familiar with or works best with your cutting machine. For cut files of the smaller pieces for some of our patterns, like the Dolls House Quiet Book and Add-on, we do not include a PDF copy. All versions come with .SVG, .PNG, and .DXF.

You will start by downloading the files from your account. Open your software and choose the file type you’d like to work with.

Pattern Cut Files

When working with cut files to cut small pattern pieces, it is imperative that you make sure the file is the correct size prior to cutting. We have included a one-inch square box offset in each file. You should be able to move the square off to the side, so it isn’t cut with the rest of your file. For files that also have square pieces, please be sure to compare them to the cut chart in the original file instructions. We’d always prefer you double check than have something cut out that isn’t useable!

Other Cut Files

For all other cut files, you should resize to your project needs. Please do keep in mind the size of some of the features. Going very small may make it difficult to cut smaller fonts or finer details.

Media

As mentioned earlier, it is very important to choose the correct media to for your cut. There is a huge selection to choose from and it can be overwhelming. Be sure to use the materials suggested by your machine for the type of project you are completing.
