- We will not be finishing the edges so you need a fabric that will NOT fray (e.g. felt, fleece).
- Stuffing, poly-fil for stuffing inside the finished toy. Make sure to use a filling which is non-flammable, and age & safety appropriate for the person who will be using or receiving the toy.
- The amounts listed below are for sewing one piece. Multiply the total by the number of pieces you would like to create.
- You can do it in any colors you like, but if you want it to be like the colors in the cover photo, you will need the following colors:
- OPTIONAL Embroidery floss
- OPTIONAL Glass seed beads for the fruit seeds
- OPTIONAL Fusible webbing e.g. Pellon 805 Wonder-Under – approximately ½ yard will be sufficient for all pieces.
- OPTIONAL Midweight fusible woven interfacing e.g. Pellon SF 101 Shape Flex – ¼ of a yard is sufficient for all pieces.
- OPTIONAL Ultra-firm heavyweight stabilizer e.g. Peltex 72 – approximately ¾ yard is enough for all of the pieces.
- Thread to match
Project OverviewHandsew Felt Food
Difficulty Level = Beginner
Pick and choose from our selection of scrumptious looking felt food. Pair the custard tartlet with whipped cream and add as many pieces of fruit as you desire. If you’re still ‘hungry’, stitch up a plate with an open sandwich. These are sure to bring hours of fun to your little ones, keeping them entertained in the kitchen!
Our Facebook group is a great place to get help, share your tips and creations! We are a friendly bunch, and we love to help and see what you have made.
Please read the full instructions before getting started.
Wash, dry, and press your fabric before starting your project. A bit of prep now prevents shrinking and means your garment will stay the same size you made it.
Never leave a child or baby unattended or allow to sleep in a garment made from one of our patterns with ties, snaps, buttons, or anything they could remove, choke on, or get caught on. Always use caution if you are unsure. We love our patterns, but we love your bundles of joy more!

Printing Your PatternSettings
The pattern is a separate download. Choose either the US letter paper, A4 paper, or A0 paper size based on the printer you wish to use. If you are in the US or Canada then your printer will likely use US letter paper. Other regions normally use A4 paper. Some people prefer to print their patterns at a print shop: A0 is best in this case.
Print at 100%.
On the second page, you will find a 1-inch and a 3-inch square test box. Print this page first, on its own, and measure these squares.
Once you are happy that the test box is accurate, print the rest of the pattern pages.
Please follow this video for information and assistance on assembling this pattern.
Also, please note that some Rebecca Page patterns and projects also come with cut files and a printable design page which you can use to plan your project if you wish. These are provided in a separate section below to avoid any confusion!

Quick Glance Cheat SheetApproximately ⅛ to ¼ inch seam allowance included
Preparation –
Sewing –
0 . PreparationSeam Allowance
⅛ to ¼ inch seam allowance included
0.0We recommend using embroidery floss for these hand stitches. Use two strands from a six-strand embroidery floss so when both strands are threaded through the needle and folded over, the two strands will become 4 strands.
1 . Attaching Thread1.1Thread the needle and tie a knot in the end of the thread.
On the inside of one of the fabric pieces, put the needle through a tiny bit of fabric.
1.2Pull the thread almost all the way to the knot. Stop pulling, split the thread close to the knot creating a gap then slip the needle through the gap.
1.3Pull the thread taut. The thread should now be knotted to the fabric.
NOTE – Tying the thread to the fabric this way will prevent the knot from coming through the fabric as you stitch.
1.4Put the needle through to the right side or underside of the fabric depending on which side of the fabric the needle needs to be on for the next step.
2 . Backstitch2.0Backstitches are used for outlining or adding fine detail.
2.1Thread the needle with colored embroidery floss/thread and attach to the inside of the fabric pieces, following the ‘Attaching Thread’ directions in the Hand Sewing Instructions above.
Pull the needle to the right side of the fabric close to the raw edge, or at the point you want to start your stitches. Pull the thread to the right side.
2.2Push the needle down about ⅛ inch away, pulling the thread all the way through. This will create a small stitch.
2.3Push the needle back up about ⅛ inch away, pulling the thread all the way through, creating a gap from the first stitch.
2.4Push the needle back into the same hole as step 2.2, pulling the thread all the way through. This will close the gap and complete the first backstitch.
2.5Repeat steps 2.2 to 2.4 creating a length of backstitches as desired.
3 . Blanket Stitch3.0This is a simple stitch usually used along an edge. You will catch your thread with your next stitch, keeping it in a straight line.
3.1Thread the needle with colored embroidery floss/thread and attach to the inside of the fabric pieces, following the ‘Attaching Thread’ directions in the Hand Sewing Instructions above.
From the inside of the fabric, push the needle to the underside of the fabric, pulling the thread all the way through the fabric.
Push the needle from the wrong side of the fabric close to the raw edge, or at the point you want to start your stitches. Pull the thread to the right side.
3.2Insert the needle through the fabric approximately ⅛ to ¼ inch from the raw edge. Then move it along approximately ⅛ to ¼ inch to the left and insert again approximately ⅛ to ¼ inch from the raw edge, making sure the thread is looped around the needle.
Tighten the thread then repeat.
TIP – To keep your stitches a regular distance from each other, make three markings on your thumb or pointer finger ⅛ to ¼ inch from each other so you can align them with your stitches.
4 . Single Chain Stitch4.0This is a looped embroidery stitch, shaped like a flower petal or teardrop.
4.1Thread the needle with colored embroidery floss/thread and attach to the inside of the fabric pieces, following the ‘Attaching Thread’ directions in the Hand Sewing Instructions above.
Bring the thread to the right side of the fabric.
Put the needle back down into the fabric right next to where you brought the needle up. Leave a loop of thread on the top side of the fabric.
NOTE – Leave a small amount of fabric between where the needle was brought up to the right side and where the needle is being put back down into the fabric.
4.2Move the needle forward about ⅛ to ¼ inch and bring to the right side of the fabric. Put the needle through the loop of thread. As the thread is pulled up from the underside of the fabric, pull the thread straight forward and be sure to pull the loop taut.
NOTE – This step can also be done by weaving the needle from where the needle is put into the fabric in Step 4.1 to where it comes up in this step. Be sure to have the needle come up in the loop so the Chain Stitch is created.
4.3On the OUTSIDE of the loop, insert the needle close to where the needle was brought from the underside of the fabric in Step 4.2. Pull the thread all the way to the back of the fabric. This locks the Chain Stitch in place.
NOTE – Leave a small amount of fabric between where the needle was brought up to the right side and where the needle is being put back down into the fabric.
This creates the first seed.
Repeat Step 4.1 to 4.3 to create as many seeds as desired.
5 . French Knots5.0This stitch is used to create small decorative knots. Don’t let French Knots scare you, they aren’t as scary as you may think.
5.1Thread the needle with colored embroidery floss/thread and attach to the inside of the fabric pieces, following the ‘Attaching Thread’ directions in the Hand Sewing Instructions above.
Push the needle to the underside of the fabric and then bring it to the right side of the fabric at the point you want to add the french knot. Pull the thread all the way to the right side.
5.2Working close to where the thread comes out of the fabric, wrap the thread around the needle three times.
NOTE – If you wrap the thread more than three times, the french knots can become loose or untidy.
5.3Carefully tighten the thread on the needle and pull the threads together on the needle. Holding the threads taut on the needle, push the needle into the fabric close to where you brought the needle to the right side of the fabric. Slowly pull the needle through to the underside. This will create a French Knot on the right side of the fabric.
NOTE – Do not push the thread back through the same hole as the working thread. Push it through just next to the original hole, leaving a little space of fabric between.
Repeat steps 5.1 to 5.3 for each french knot.
TIP – Cluster these together to create a dense, textured filling, or scatter them loosely to create a lightness to your embroidery. Creating individual french knots can give your design a little punctuation.
6 . Straight Stitch6.0These stitches are created without looping or crossing your thread. They can be used to create broken or unbroken lines or starbursts, fill shapes and create geometric designs.
6.1Thread the needle with colored embroidery floss/thread and attach to the inside of the fabric pieces, following the ‘Attaching Thread’ directions in the Hand Sewing Instructions above.
Insert the needle from the wrong side of the fabric close to the raw edge, or at the point you want to start stitching. Pull the thread to the right side.
6.2Push the needle down about ⅛ to ¼ inch away, pulling the thread all the way through. This will create a small stitch.
6.3Push the needle back up to the right side about ⅛ to ¼ inch away from the last stitch, this will create a space between the first stitch. Pull the thread all the way through to the right side.
Repeat steps 6.1 to 6.3 creating the desired number of straight stitches in the desired pattern.
7 . Ladder Stitch7.0These stitches can be used to join two pieces together almost invisibly.
7.1Thread the needle with colored embroidery floss/thread and attach to the inside of the fabric pieces, following the ‘Attaching Thread’ directions in the Hand Sewing Instructions above.
Directly across from the starting point, push the needle through the felt and then back down through the fold on the opposite seam to create a stitch that is between ⅛ – ¼ inch long. When the thread is pulled through, the stitch is concealed within the seam crease, this will be a horizontal stitch connecting the left and right sides of the opening.
7.2Repeat all the way around. To tighten the stitches, gently pull the thread. This will conceal the stitches in between the seams.
NOTE – The stitches have been left loose in this picture to show what the ladder stitch looks like. Pull the thread through and taut after each stitch.
8 . Running Stitch8.0A running stitch is a straight line of stitches created by pushing the needle and thread through the fabric without back stitching. These stitches can be far apart or closer together. This stitch will be seen on both side of your fabric.
8.1Thread the needle with colored embroidery floss/thread and attach to the inside of the fabric pieces, following the ‘Attaching Thread’ directions in the Hand Sewing Instructions above.
From the inside of the fabric, push the needle to the underside of the fabric, pulling the thread all the way through the fabric.
Moving the needle about ⅛ inch to ¼ inch forward, insert the needle from the underside of the fabric and pull the thread to the right side.
8.2Move the needle forward about ⅛ to ¼ inch and then put the needle back into the fabric at about the same distance, ⅛ to ¼ inch from where you brought the needle up.
TIP – Instead of stitching each Running Stitch individually, the stitches can be taken more than one at a time by weaving the needle in and out of the fabric. This makes Running Stitches quick to sew.
8.3Repeat the stitches across until the desired length is reached.
9 . Whipstitch9.1Thread the needle with colored embroidery floss/thread and attach to the inside of the fabric pieces, following the ‘Attaching Thread’ directions in the Hand Sewing Instructions above.
TIP – To make the stitches even, mark your finger with lines ⅛ to ¼ inch apart. Use this to line up your stitches, matching the distance on your finger.
Put the needle through one of the pieces of the fabric so it comes out on the right side of the fabric about ⅛ to ¼ inch away from the edge. Then bring the needle over both pieces of fabric and insert it into the fabric ⅛ to ¼ inch from the edge. Pull the needle through to the underside of the fabric.
9.2Move the needle back over both pieces of fabric and put the needle back into the fabric about ⅛ to ¼ inch away from where it came up. Be sure to go through both layers. Pull the needle all the way through to the wrong side of the fabric and pull the thread taut.
9.3Repeat all the way around.
0 . PreparationSeam Allowance
⅛ to ¼ inch seam allowance included
0.1Pattern Markings
If you are creating the Lettuce Leaf/Tomato Slice, transfer the pattern markings using tailor’s chalk or disappearing fabric ink, onto both pieces.
0.2Fusible Webbing
If you are sewing the Strawberry Slice/Apple Slice/Kiwi Wedge/Plate, draw the fruit inner pieces, apple seeds and the outer rim of the plate onto the fusible webbing. Iron the fusible webbing onto each piece and cut them out.
TIP – If you are using felt, use a lower heat when ironing the fusible webbing.
TIP – Make sure to use the manufacturer’s instructions for ironing in place. We would also suggest you place a pressing cloth between the fabric and your iron to protect your iron. Occasionally the glue used in the fusible webbing can leak out and can mark your iron. If you do not have a pressing cloth, a clean thin tea towel or scrap of 100% cotton can suffice.
0.3Interfacing
If you are sewing the Meat Slice/Leaf Lettuce/Tomato Slice/Tortilla Chip, draw these onto the Interfacing.
Iron the interfacing onto the fabric and cut out the pieces.
TIP – Make sure to use the manufacturer’s instructions for ironing in place. We would also suggest you place a pressing cloth between the fabric and your iron to protect your iron. Occasionally the glue used in the interfacing can leak out and can mark your iron. If you do not have a pressing cloth, a clean, thin tea towel or scrap of 100% cotton can suffice.
0.4Stabilizer
If you are sewing the Custard Tartlet, cut a piece the same size as the Custard pieces.
If you are sewing the Slice of Bread/Cheese Slice/Tomato Slice or Plate, cut these pieces and trim ⅛ inch off all sides/edges. When these are sewn, they can’t be seen quite as easily.
Using the manufacturer instructions, iron the Custard Tartlet, Cheese and Plate stabilizer pieces to the fabric pieces. Be careful to use correct iron settings.
NOTE – If your stabilizer is double sided, do not iron the Slice of Bread or Tomato Slice pieces together yet. Both the Lettuce Leaf and the Tomato Slice will have embroidery stitched on before ironing the stabilizer on.
1 . Custard Tartlet1.0Custard Tartlet and Fruit Set
The custard tartlet and fruit pieces are listed below as individual steps. You can sew all or some of these – the choice is yours. Sew multiples of each piece if desired. Skip the step for the item you do not wish to sew.
1.1Thread the needle and attach to the fabric following the ‘Attaching Thread’ directions in the Hand Sewing Instructions above.
A whipstitch will be used to stitch the two Custard pieces together, following the ‘Whipstitch’ directions in the Hand Sewing Instructions above.
Layer the Custard pieces, wrong sides together.
NOTE – Make sure both pieces of felt are lined up and laying on top of each other.
1.2Stitch around ¾ of the marked circle. Separate the two pieces of felt and very lightly stuff using a chopstick or blunt knitting needle.
NOTE – If you overstuff the Custard it will be difficult to stitch the Tartlet Crust pieces to it.
1.3Continue stitching the gap closed using a whipstitch.
Tie the thread off and poke the needle into the Custard near the knot and out the other side approximately ½ to 1 inch away.
Pull the thread taut and snip close to the fabric and let the thread drop back into the Custard.
1.4Thread the needle and attach to the fabric following the ‘Attaching Thread’ directions in the Hand Sewing Instructions above.
Attach the thread on the underside of the Custard.
1.5Place the Inner Tartlet Crust piece on top of the Custard, with the open circle directly over the Custard.
TIP – As you work with attaching the Inner Tartlet Crust to the Custard, the goal is to not see the thread on the right side of the Tartlet. So, remember to only push the needle about halfway through the felt and not all the way through. This will allow you to pull the fabric taut and still not have stitches seen on the right side of the fabric.
1.6A Ladder Stitch (slipstitch) will be used to stitch the Inner Tartlet Crust to the Custard. Follow the Ladder Stitch steps. Lift the side of the Inner Tartlet Crust that is closest to where the thread is attached.
Stitch all the way around.
NOTE – The stitches have been left loose in this picture to show what the ladder stitch looks like. Pull the thread through and taut after each stitch.
1.7Tie the thread off and poke the needle into the Custard and out the other side approximately ½ to 1 inch away.
Pull the thread taut and snip close to the fabric and let the thread drop back into the Custard.
1.8Thread the needle and attach to the fabric following the ‘Attaching Thread’ directions in the Hand Sewing Instructions above.
Place the stabilizer in the middle of the Outer Tartlet Crust. Center the Custard and Inner Tartlet Crust piece over the stabilizer.
1.9Use Running Stitches to stitch the Outer Tartlet Crust to the Inner Tartlet Crust and Custard. Follow the ‘Running Stitch’ directions in the Hand Sewing Instructions above.
NOTE – Be careful to stitch to the edge or right next to the edge of the Stabilizer circle.
Tie the thread off and poke the needle into the Custard and out the other side approximately ½ to 1 inch away.
Pull the thread taut and snip close to the fabric and let the thread drop back into the Custard.
1.10Use Running Stitches to create the fluted edges. Follow the ‘Running Stitch’ directions in the Hand Sewing Instructions above. Gently pinch the Inner Tartlet Crust and Outer Tartlet Crust pieces together inserting the needle horizontally into the pinched piece.
TIP – To start, make a pleat, finger width apart all the way around. Once those pleats are made, make smaller pleats in between the bigger pleats.
Continue stitching up the pinched edge until you reach the top. Securely tie off the thread.
Repeat around until you achieved your desired look.
NOTE – Once all the pleats have been stitched, the Inner Tartlet Crust may sit higher than the Outer Tartlet Crust in spots. If this is the case, trim the Inner Tartlet Crust to match the Outer Tartlet Crust.
2 . Strawberry Slice2.1Center the Inner Wedge piece on top of the Wedge Slice piece lining up the straight edges.
Thread the needle with colored embroidery floss/thread and attach to the inside of the Wedge Slice, following the ‘Attaching Thread’ directions in the Hand Sewing Instructions above.
TIP – The Inner Wedge piece can be ironed on with Fusible Webbing before stitching the embroidery stitches.
2.2Hand stitch a Straight Stitch using a colored floss or embroidery thread. Follow the ‘Straight Stitch’ directions in the Hand Sewing Instructions above.
Stitch straight stitches across the Wedge Inner piece, only moving to the next stitch on the underside of the fabric.
2.3Change thread colors and add accent colors as desired, varying the lengths of the stitches.
Repeat the with other side of Strawberry.
2.4Thread the needle and attach to the wrong side of the fabric following the ‘Attaching Thread’ directions in the Hand Sewing Instructions above.
A Blanket Stitch will be used to stitch the two pieces together. Follow the ‘Blanket Stitch’ directions in the Hand Sewing Instructions above.
2.5Thread the needle and attach to the wrong side of the fabric following the ‘Attaching Thread’ directions in the Hand Sewing Instructions above. Attach the thread on the underside of the Outer Wedge of the Strawberry.
Before stitching the Outer Wedge onto the Wedge Slices, you need to add seeds. This can be done with French Knots or with beads. Don’t let French Knots scare you, they aren’t as scary as you may think. Follow the French Knot directions in the Hand Sewing Instructions above.
TIP – To add glass seed beads instead of French Knots, choose the color of beads desired. The quantity will vary depending on the number of seeds you’d like. After attaching the thread to the Wedge and pulling the thread to the right side of the fabric, put the needle through a bead. Once the bead has been threaded, insert the needle back into the fabric and pull the thread taut. Repeat with the remaining beads.
2.6Open the Wedge Slice pieces that have been sewn together and align the pointed edge of the Wedge to one of the corner edges.
Thread the needle and attach to the wrong side of the fabric following the ‘Attaching Thread’ directions in the Hand Sewing Instructions above. Attach the thread to the Outer Wedge piece.
2.7The Wedge piece will be attached following the ‘Blanket Stitch’ directions in the Hand Sewing Instructions above.
With the Wedge piece and one side of the Outer Wedge pieces wrong sides together, insert the needle, pull thread through. Move the needle to the left along the raw edge and insert it again, loop the thread around the needle and insert it into the fabric again.
Repeat across and then up the other side, leaving an opening big enough to stuff the strawberry with poly-fil so it feels firm.
2.8Finish closing the strawberry and tie off the thread. Insert the needle into the Strawberry pushing the needle out at a random spot. Pull the thread taut and cut the thread and let the thread drop back into the Strawberry.
3 . Apple Slice3.1Apple – If using fusible webbing with the seeds, decide on placement for the Apple Seeds. Iron in place to make it easier to stitch them on.
Thread the needle and attach to the wrong side of the fabric following the ‘Attaching Thread’ directions in the Hand Sewing Instructions above.
3.2The Apple Seeds will be stitched onto the Wedge Slice using straight stitches. Follow the ‘Straight Stitch’ directions in the Hand Sewing Instructions above.
Repeat for the other seeds, and on both sides of the Wedge Slice.
NOTE – Be careful to stitch through enough felt to secure the Seeds to the Wedge Slice as felt is prone to shred if stitched too close to the edge.
3.3Thread the needle again and attach to the wrong side of the fabric following the ‘Attaching Thread’ directions in the Hand Sewing Instructions above.
The Wedge Slices will be stitched together using the ‘Whipstitches’ directions in the Hand Sewing Instructions above.
3.4Open the Wedge Slice pieces that have been sewn together and align the pointed edge of the Wedge to one of the corner edges.
