- Christmas Tree Hat/Elf Hat – Both hats have a hemband and are intended to sit at your forehead, over your ears and at the hairline at the back. This is where you’ll need to measure your head circumference to choose your size.
- Headband – The headband is intended to sit at your forehead, behind the ears, and at the hairline at the back. Doing a fit check is essential as elastic tensions will vary.
- Note – Depending on the type of elastic used, there may be some wiggle room in the headband.
- When choosing your size, keep in mind the hat/headband is supposed to sit securely against the head but not feel as if it is squeezing.
- If you get stuck with fitting, see our favorite resources on our Pinterest Sewing Fitting Advice board.
- OPTIONAL Trimming – approximately 2-5 yards will be sufficient for all sizes, depending on the number of rounds on the tree you would like.
- NOTE – Pompom tape, tassel tape, fringe, ric rac tape are all good options for the top stitch option.
- Star – You will need a small amount of stuffing like Polyfil or batting to stuff the inside. You could even use scraps of light weight fabric.
- Thread to match
- OPTIONAL Ears – You will need a small amount of stuffing like Polyfil or batting to stuff the inside. You could even use scraps of light weight fabric.
- OPTIONAL ½ inch wide bias binding – approximately 2 yards will be sufficient for all sizes.
- NOTE – If making the bias binding, you will want to make 1 ¾ inch wide strips.
- Thread to match
- OPTIONAL Antlers – You will need a small amount of stuffing like Polyfil or batting to stuff the inside. You could even use scraps of light weight fabric.
- Head band- elastic size
- ¾ inch wide elastic – Sizes 1 to 4

- Use a ball point needle of a size appropriate to your fabric when working with knits – The ball point needle has a slightly rounded tip and will prevent from damaging the fiber. Use ball point pins or clips and, if you can’t, use regular pins into the seam allowance and you should be just fine.
- Use a stretch stitch – You can use either a short and narrow zigzag or a stretch stitch (lightning bolt stitch) for construction. Test on a scrap of fabric to find which stitch and tension settings work best for you. You don’t want the fabric to pucker under your stitches.
- Your machine might have many fancy stretch stitches and you are welcome to play with them, but often the basic zigzag or stretch stitch are just right.
- Use a walking foot – Using a walking-foot is not a necessity but it is highly recommended when working on a stretchy knit. The walking-foot helps to prevent one layer of fabric from stretching out while sewing. Both layers of fabrics are fed at the same time under your needle.
- Reduce your presser foot tension – Some machines will allow you to change your presser foot tension. Check your manual to see how to reduce your presser foot tension. Reducing tension will prevent your fabric from stretching while it goes through the machine.
- Use a ball point twin-needle (double needle) for top stitching – Using a twin-needle will give you a regular double line of straight stitches on the right side and a short and stretchy zigzag on the wrong side. Alternately, if you don’t own a twin needle, you can use a medium size zigzag stitch for hemming and topstitching. I like to lengthen my stitch a little when top stitching with the twin needle. Test on a scrap of fabric to find what works best for you.

Printing Your PatternSettings
The pattern is a separate download. Choose either the US letter paper, A4 paper, or A0 paper size based on the printer you wish to use. If you are in the US or Canada then your printer will likely use US letter paper. Other regions normally use A4 paper. Some people prefer to print their patterns at a print shop: A0 is best in this case.
Print at 100%.
On the second page, you will find a 1-inch and a 3-inch square test box. Print this page first, on its own, and measure these squares.
Once you are happy that the test box is accurate, print the rest of the pattern pages.
Please follow this video for information and assistance on assembling this pattern.
Also, please note that some Rebecca Page patterns and projects also come with cut files and a printable design page which you can use to plan your project if you wish. These are provided in a separate section below to avoid any confusion!

NOTE – To cut fabric on the fold, fold your fabric over parallel to the selvage edges. Align the pattern piece so it is on the fold of the fabric. Cut around the edges, leaving the fold. If you have folded your fabric correctly the fold will be parallel to the two edges of the fabric that are finished. The raw edges (e.g. the ones you could pick at, and threads would come off) will be at a right angle to your fold.
Fabric TipsTips for Sewing with Knit Fabrics
Using a serger is not a necessity to sew with knit fabrics! Here are a few tips to get the best results on a regular sewing machine:
Finishing the seams – Because knits don’t fray, it isn’t strictly necessary to finish your seams. That being said, you will achieve a more polished and durable look if you do an overcasting or zigzag stitch on your raw edges.
Here is an example of some of the stitches you could use.
From left to right: Ballpoint twin-needle, narrow zigzag, stretch stitch (lightning bolt), overcasting

Quick Glance Cheat Sheet½ inch seam allowance included – Top stitching ⅛ inch – Basting ¼ inch
Preparation –
Christmas Tree Hat or Elf Hat Sewing –
Elf Ears Sewing –
Reindeer Antlers Sewing –
0.1 . PREPARATION - OPTIONAL InterfacingSeam Allowance
½ inch seam allowance included – Top stitching ⅛ inch – Basting ¼ inch
0.1.1Using the manufacturer’s instructions, apply the fusible fleece interfacing onto the wrong side of Cone pieces.
TIP – To add more structure, you can quilt the Cone pieces.
0.2 . OPTIONAL Bias Binding0.2.1If you are sewing the Elf Hat and are not using store bought binding, you’ll need to create double fold bias binding to hide the raw edges.
Follow this free DIY Bias Binding tutorial to create the bias binding.
1 . CHRISTMAS TREE HAT OR ELF HAT - LayersSeam Allowance
½ inch seam allowance included – Top stitching ⅛ inch – Basting ¼ inch
1.0If you want to add OPTIONAL Binding to the Cone, continue below. If you are not adding the OPTIONAL Binding, skip to step 1.7.
1.1OPTIONAL Binding: You are going to bind the long curved edges of the Layer pieces, so when you stitch these onto the Cone pieces, there will be no raw edges showing. You do not need to bind the straight edges as they go into the side seam.
Open out the binding starting at one end of the curved raw edge, right sides together, matching raw edges. Pin. Continue all the way around the curve.
OPTIONAL TRIM: If you would like to add trim to your Christmas Tree Hat, place it between the Layer and Binding.
1.2Stitch in place by stitching along the fold on the bias tape.
1.3Hold the binding away from the seam. Trim the seam allowance approximately ⅛ inch.
1.4Fold the binding over the seam to enclose all raw edges. Pin.
1.5Edge stitch along the bias ⅛ inch from the edge.
Repeat steps 1.1 to 1.5 on all Layer pieces.
1.6Place the bound pieces on the right side of Cone, aligning straight edges. Pin. Then stitch them on using a ⅛ inch seam allowance.
Repeat for all Layer pieces.
1.7No Binding OPTION: Fold ¼ inch of the curved edge on Layer piece towards the wrong side and press.
Repeat this step on all Layer pieces.
1.8Place the Layer pieces on the Cone where the straight edges align and applique them on, topstitching the curved edges using a ⅛ inch seam allowance.
OPTIONAL TRIM: If you would like to add trim to your Christmas Tree Hat, place it between the Layer and Binding.
Add additional trim or other decorations as desired throughout the Christmas Tree Hat.
2 . Hat Construction of Cone2.1Fold the Cone piece right sides together and pin the side edges.
NOTE – A plain Hat Cone is shown in the photos however construction is the same for both the Elf Hat and the Christmas Tree Hat.
2.2Serge or stitch using a ½ inch seam allowance. Turn it right side out.
2.3Fold Cone Lining piece right sides together and pin the side edges.
2.4Serge or stitch using a ½ inch seam allowance, leaving a 2 to 3 inch gap for turning.
2.5Sew a row of gathering stitches ¼ inch from the bottom raw edge of Main Cone.
Set your sewing machine to a gather stitch. This will be the longest stitch length possible with no backstitch (also called a locking stitch) at the beginning or end and will have loose tension.
Depending on your machine, you may also need to loosen your bobbin tension.
TIP – Use a different colored bobbin thread to your top thread. That way you can differentiate them more easily later when you come to gather it. Plus, it’s a great way to use up all the leftover bobbin threads!
2.6Repeat step 2.5 for Cone Lining.
3 . Hat Hemband3.1Fold Hemband in half widthwise right sides together and pin.
NOTE – The Christmas Tree Hat Hemband will be rectangular, rather than angled as shown here.
3.2Serge or stitch using a ½ inch seam allowance.
Press seam allowance open or to one side if using a serger.
3.3Fold Hemband in half lengthwise wrong sides together.
3.4Place Hemband over Main Cone right sides together matching the raw edges. Gently pull on the bobbin thread to gather the Main Cone until the width of the Main Cone matches the width of the Hemband. Gently spread it out so that it is gathered evenly.
If not adding elastic for pets, skip to step 3.6.
3.5OPTIONAL – If adding under-chin elastic for pets, measure elastic that will fit comfortably under your pet’s chin.
Clip or pin one end of the elastic to band.
Find the opposite side of the hat and pin the other end of the elastic, making sure it is not twisted.
3.6Gather Cone Lining to the size of Hemband and align its raw edge to the other raw edges. The Hemband should be sandwiched in between the Cone Main and Lining pieces. Main and Lining Cone pieces should be right sides together.
3.7Serge or stitch using a ½ inch seam allowance.
3.8Pull the hat through the gap, so it is right side out.
3.9Stitch the gap closed by machine or hand stitching. Turn hat right side out and tuck the Lining into the hat.
For the Elf Ears on the Elf Hat, continue with step 5.
To add a star to the top of the Christmas Tree Hat, continue below.
4 . OPTIONAL Star4.0You can choose to make a Single or Double (3D) Star to the top of your Christmas hat. For the Single Star start at step 4.1, for the Double Star skip to step 4.2.
4.1Single Star: Cut a Star and hand stitch it to the top of the Christmas Tree Hat.
Your Christmas Tree Hat is finished!
4.2Double Star: Place the Star on a piece of spare fabric and stitch around, leaving approximately a 1 inch gap on the bottom.
4.3Cut around the Star so you have a double star.
4.4OPTIONAL – Stuff some stuffing into Star to create a 3D shape.
4.5Pull the Star onto the top of the Christmas Tree Hat. Hand stitch the gap closed and the Star to the hat.
Your Christmas Tree Hat is finished!
5 . ELF EARSSeam Allowance
½ inch seam allowance included – Top stitching ⅛ inch – Basting ¼ inch
5.1Place two Ear pieces right sides together and pin.
5.2Stitch using a ½ inch seam allowance, leaving a 1-inch gap on the bottom for turning.
5.3Trim the seam allowance approximately in half and clip into the seam allowance. Be careful not to cut into the seam.
5.4Turn the Ear right side out and insert stuffing into Ear to create the 3D shape.
TIP – Use a blunt object e.g. a chopstick for this.
5.5Use a slipstitch (also called a ‘ladder stitch’) to stitch the gap closed.
Fold your fabric under by ½ inch. You will be stitching along this folded edge.
Thread your needle, tying the two thread tail ends together in a knot. This will provide added strength to your finished seam.
Push your needle up from the inside of the Ear to the outside, through one of the folds, pulling the thread tail completely through. Your knotted end will now be nicely concealed within the seam on the inside.
Directly across from your starting point, push the needle down and then back up through the opposite seam fold to create a stitch that is between ¼ – ½ inch long. When you pull the thread through, you will notice that the stitch you just made is concealed within the seam crease, and there will be a horizontal stitch connecting the left and right sides of your opening.
Pull the thread through so that it is taut.
5.6Make a ½ inch pinch at the bottom of the Ear to create extra 3D shape.
Repeat steps 5.1 to 5.5 to create the second Ear.
Skip to step 7 for the Headband construction.
6 . REINDEER ANTLERSSeam Allowance
½ inch seam allowance included – Top stitching ⅛ inch – Basting ¼ inch
6.1Fold the bottom edge of Antler over to the wrong side by ½ inch. Press. This will create a memory hem.
NOTE – A memory hem is where you fold and press your hem, but do not actually stitch it yet.
Repeat for all 4 Antler pieces.
6.2Place two Antlers right sides together and stitch using a ½ inch seam allowance.
6.3Trim the seam allowance approximately in half and clip into the seam to reduce bulks. Be careful to cut close to the seam but not into it.
Repeat steps 6.2 to 6.3 to create the second Antler.
6.4Turn Antler right side out and check if you need more clipping to release the shape. If you are happy with the shape, put some stuffing into Antler.
NOTE – make sure you put enough stuffing into Antler, so it is solid.
Repeat for the second Antler.
7 . Headband7.0If you are making the Elf Hat with OPTIONAL Ears, skip to step 7.7. If you are making the Headband OPTION, follow below.
7.1Fold each long edge of Main Headband over to the wrong side by ½ inch. Press. This will create a memory hem.
NOTE – A memory hem is where you fold and press your hem, but do not actually stitch it yet.
7.2Create a ½ inch memory hem on all 4 edges of Headband Lining.
7.3Pin elastic to the right side of the Main Headband and baste it ⅜ inch from the short raw edge.
Repeat on the other short edge.
FIT CHECK: Due to the differences in the types of elastic, before moving on to the next step try the Headband on to make sure it’s the desired size and make any needed adjustments.
TIP – to make the stitch more secure, stitch back and forth 3-4 times.
7.4Place Main and Lining Headband wrong sides together, tuck in all memory hems sandwiching the elastic into the short edges. Pin all around.
7.5Stitch using a ⅛ inch seam allowance from the folded edges.
If you are doing Reindeer Antlers, follow below. For the Elf Ear Headband, skip to step 7.7.
7.6Reindeer Antler OPTION: To place the Antlers, fold the Headband in half matching the bottom edges of the fabric where you basted the elastic. Place an Antler approximately 1 to 2 inches on each side of the fold. Hand stitch the Antler to the Main Headband. Go around the bottom of the Antler when hand stitching, so it will not flop over. If it is needed, put some more stuffing into the Antler.
FIT CHECK: Before hand stitching the second Antler, try the Headband on and adjust the placing of the marking if needed.
Attach the second Antler.
Your Reindeer Headband is finished!
7.7Elf Ears Headband OR Elf Hat with Elf Ears: Hand stitch an Ear to the Headband/Elf Hat approximately 1 inch from the hem. Stitch them throughout all layers of Headband/Elf Hat, so they will not flop down.
FIT CHECK: Before hand stitching the second Ear, try the Headband/Elf Hat on and adjust the placing of the second Ear, if needed.
Attach the second Elf Ear.
TIP – Try on the Headband before stitching the Elf Ears on to make sure the placement is as desired.
Your Elf Ears Headband / Elf Hat with Elf Ears is finished!
