- Yarn choice depends on the effect you wish to create in your project. Apart from the color, there is fiber and weight options to consider.
- Wool, wool blends and acrylic yarns are warm and tend to have a fluffier finish. These are perfect for making cozy clothing, soft furnishings, hats, gloves etc. They are also great for soft toys that are designed to be cuddly.
- Cotton and cotton blend yarns have a smooth finish. This is good for small details and is especially popular for amigurumi patterns. It is ideal for pieces that are likely to be sucked or chewed by small children. Cotton is also cooler and lighter so is a good choice for warmer weather clothes.
- Yarn weights range from very thin and lacy, right up to ribbon style yarns, cord, and rope. Again, your choice here will depend on your project. Thinner weight yarns will give a delicate effect, so would be ideal for dollies, lacey details, or small, intricate pieces. Chunky, thick, yarns, such as cord, are a brilliant choice for projects like storage baskets, rugs, and plant holders. They work up quickly on a large project and are very sturdy and hardwearing.
- Many patterns will still work well with a substituted yarn, even if that yarn is a different weight. However, there will be a difference in the size and finish of your completed work, in comparison to the pattern sample.
- When buying yarn, you can find a lot of details, including weight and fiber content, on the band around the yarn, or on the product details page (if buying online). Retailers will sometimes give examples of what that particular yarn is most suitable for, along with recommended hook sizes. However, hook sizes in patterns may vary from those recommended. This is done to create the right effect for that project, which may require a tighter or looser gauge, than the suggested hook would provide. If in doubt, follow the hook size recommended in the pattern.
- If you do not have the suggested weight of yarn for the pattern you want to complete, you can use multiple strands of thinner yarns to make up the desired weight. For example, two strands of 4 ply yarn can be crocheted together, like one strand, to make 8 ply yarn. If you do this, you will need to work some sample swatches, with different hook sizes, to ensure that you can match the gauge in your pattern correctly.

Quick Glance Cheat SheetHook Size 4mm and 2mm – Test Square 4mm hook – 2 inch = 8 stiches x 6 rows
Preparation –
1.SAMPLE SQUARE – Check the crochet gauge following the first 6 rows of the front panel.
Crocheting –
Stitch numbers written in square brackets are worked into the same stitch. Use a stitch marker to keep track of your rows. Put this into the last stitch of the row and move it, as you work.
1.FRONT PANEL – This piece is made in rows. Chain 2 doesn’t count as a stitch.
2. BACK PANEL – This piece is made in rows. Chain 2 doesn’t count as a stitch.
3.LEMON SLICE – (Make 11, or as many as you prefer.) The lemon slice is made in semi-circle rows. Ch1 doesn’t count as a stitch.
4. SEGMENTS – Make 3 per lemon slice. Made in rows.
5. FINISHING AND ASSEMBLY – Block the lemon slices and segments, by pinning them out on a flat surface and spraying with water. Allow to dry. Glue 3 segments onto each slice. Using a length of bright yellow yarn, sew 2 straight stitches onto each segment. From the bottom tip of the triangle segment, to the opposite corner. Then repeat, from the tip, to the other corner. Lie the front panel, right side up. Measure 2 ½ inches down, from the top edge. Arrange 4 slices, randomly, on the bottom section. Sew the slices onto the front panel, using small, tight whipstitches. Use bright yellow yarn to sew around the curved edge and white yarn along the straight edge. Lie the back panel, right side up. Measure 2 ½ inches down from the top edge. Arrange 5 lemon slices, randomly, on the bottom of the panel. Sew the slices onto the panel, in the same way as before. (In step 4) Lie the back panel, wrong side up, and put the front panel on top, right side up. Pin or clip together. Using bright green yarn, whipstitch around the edges of the panels, joining them together. Fold the flap over the front, position the remaining 2 slices and sew on as before. Open the flap and stick 4 velcro dots along the top edge. Match up the other velcro pieces, with the sticky side up. Fold the flap back down and press down on the Velcro. Leave for 24 hours.

Hook Size 4mm and 2mm – Test Square 4mm hook - 2 inch = 8 stiches x 6 rows
0.0Each of the following stitches will be used in this pattern. All US Terminology is used in this pattern. The steps will show how to do them step-by-step, but you might prefer to get familiar with them before getting started.
0.1 . Yarn Over (yo)0.1.1Wrap the yarn around the hook from back to front.
0.2 . Chain (ch)0.2.1With a slip knot on your hook, yarn over.
0.2.2Pull your hook down and through the loop on your hook, leaving one loop.
0.3 . Slip Stitch (sl st)0.3.1Insert your hook into the top loop. Yarn over.
0.3.2Pull through the loop of yarn.
0.3.3Pull the loop of yarn through the first loop on your hook as well.
0.4 . Single Crochet (sc)0.4.1Insert your hook into the top loop, yarn over.
0.4.2Pull the loop of yarn through, yarn over again.
0.4.3Pull through both loops on your hook.
0.5 . Single Crochet Two Together (sc2tog)0.5.1Insert your hook into the first stitch, yarn over.
0.5.2Pull through the loop of yarn.
0.5.3Insert your hook into the second stitch, yarn over.
0.5.4Pull through a loop of yarn. Yarn over.
0.5.5Pull through all three loops on the hook.
0.6 . Half Double Crochet (hdc)0.6.1Yarn over, insert your hook into the top loop.
0.6.2Yarn over, pull through the loop of yarn.
0.6.3Yarn over again and pull through all three loops on your hook.
0.7 . Slip Knot0.7.1Leaving a tail (around 4-5 inches long) of yarn at the front of your hand, wrap the yarn loosely, around your first finger. Wrap the yarn from the front, crossing the yarn at the top of your finger.
0.7.2Insert your hook under the yarn on the right side. Hook the yarn on the left, pull it under the yarn on the right, twisting the hook as you pull it through.
0.7.3Carefully take the knot off your finger. Pull the free end, to tighten the knot.
0.7.4Pull the working yarn, to tighten the loop on your hook. Now you are ready to work.
0.8 . Finish off (fo)0.8.1Finish off by cutting the yarn and pulling the end through the loop on the hook. Pull this tight, to stop the stitches unravelling.
0.9 . Hand Stitching0.9.0The pattern also includes hand sewing techniques. We recommend using embroidery floss for these hand stitches. Use two strands from a six-strand embroidery floss so when both strands are threaded through the needle and folded over, the two strands will become 4 strands.
0.10 . Attaching Thread0.10.1Thread the needle and tie a knot in the end of the thread.
On the inside of one of the fabric pieces, put the needle through a tiny bit of fabric.
0.10.2Pull the thread almost all the way to the knot. Stop pulling, split the thread close to the knot creating a gap then slip the needle through the gap.
0.10.3Pull the thread taut. The thread should now be knotted to the fabric.
NOTE – Tying the thread to the fabric this way will prevent the knot from coming through the fabric as you stitch.
0.10.4Put the needle through to the right side or underside of the fabric depending on which side of the fabric the needle needs to be on for the next step.
0.11 . Whipstitch0.11.0We use a whipstitch when sewing felt as it is an easy way to stitch flat seams, encasing the seam allowances in the stitching.
0.11.1Thread the needle with colored embroidery floss/thread and attach to the inside of the fabric pieces, following the ‘Attaching Thread’ directions in the Hand Sewing Instructions above.
TIP – To make the stitches even, mark your finger with lines ⅛ to ¼ inch apart. Use this to line up your stitches, matching the distance on your finger.
Put the needle through one of the pieces of the fabric so it comes out on the right side of the fabric about ⅛ to ¼ inch away from the edge. Then bring the needle over both pieces of fabric and insert it into the fabric ⅛ to ¼ inch from the edge. Pull the needle through to the underside of the fabric.
0.11.2Move the needle back over both pieces of fabric and put the needle back into the fabric about ⅛ to ¼ inch away from where it came up. Be sure to go through both layers. Pull the needle all the way through to the wrong side of the fabric and pull the thread taut.
0.11.3Repeat all the way around.
0.12 . Straight Stitch0.12.0These stitches are created without looping or crossing your thread. They can be used to create broken or unbroken lines or starbursts, fill shapes and create geometric designs.
0.12.1Thread the needle with colored embroidery floss/thread and attach to the inside of the fabric pieces, following the ‘Attaching Thread’ directions in the Hand Sewing Instructions above.
Insert the needle from the wrong side of the fabric close to the raw edge, or at the point you want to start stitching. Pull the thread to the right side.
0.12.2Push the needle down about ⅛ to ¼ inch away, pulling the thread all the way through. This will create a small stitch.
0.12.3Push the needle back up to the right side about ⅛ to ¼ inch away from the last stitch, this will create a space between the first stitch. Pull the thread all the way through to the right side.
Repeat steps 01.1 to 01.3 creating the desired number of straight stitches in the desired pattern.
0.13 . NOTES0.13.0NOTE – It is advisable to read through each step, before you start crocheting, to ensure that you understand the step fully.
NOTE – This pattern uses chain one and slip stitch at the start or end of rows worked. These do not count, in the stitch numbers given for each row.
0.13.1Sample Square
If you are a beginner, or are substituting with a different weight yarn, it may be helpful to work a sample square, to check your gauge is correct, for this pattern. Make the sample square using the first 6 rows of the Front Panel and a 4mm hook. You can try working with a larger or smaller hook size if your gauge needs adjusting.
1 . Front Panel1.0This Panel is made in simple rows.
1.1With the bright green yarn and your 4mm crochet hook, chain 36.
1.2Starting in the third chain from the hook, work one half double crochet into each chain across. Turn your work (34 stitches).
1.3Chain two. Work one half double crochet into every stitch across the row, turn (34 stitches).
1.4Repeat step 1.3 for sixteen rows (34 stitches per row – 18 rows total).
1.5Now you are going to work a border around the edge of the panel.
Chain one.
Work one single crochet into the first thirty-three stitches of the row and two single crochets into the last stitch (which becomes the corner).
Turning the panel, work down the left side, making a single crochet into each of the eighteen row ends.
Along the bottom edge, work two single crochets into the corner, one single crochet into the next thirty-two stitches and two single crochets into the last (corner) stitch.
Finally, work up the right side of the panel. Work one single crochet into each row end and two single crochets into the last stitch.
Slip stitch into the chain one at the start of the border.
1.6Finish off and weave the ends into the wrong side of the panel.
2 . Back Panel2.0This panel is made in the same way as the Front Panel, but with extra rows, to make it longer.
2.1With the bright green yarn and your 4mm crochet hook, chain thirty six.
2.2Starting in the third chain from the hook, work one half double crochet into each chain across. Turn your work (34 stitches).
2.3Chain two. Work one half double crochet into every stitch across the row, turn (34 stitches).
2.4Repeat step 2.3 for twenty four rows (34 stitches per row – 26 rows in total).
2.5Now you are going to work a border around the edge of the panel.
Chain one.
Work one single crochet into the first thirty-three stitches of the row and two single crochets into the last stitch, (which becomes the corner).
Turning the panel, work down the left side, making a single crochet into each of the twenty-six row ends.
2.6Finish off and weave the ends into the wrong side of the panel.
3 . Lemon Slice3.0Make 11. This is made in rows, that create an increasing, semi-circle shape, as you work.
OPTIONAL – You can make more or less of these slices, to suit your requirements.
3.1With white yarn and your 2mm crochet hook, chain two.
3.2Work three single crochets into the second chain from the hook and turn your work (3 stitches).
3.3Chain one. Work two single crochets into each stitch and turn (6 stitches).
3.4Chain one. Work two single crochets into the first stitch, one single crochet into the next four stitches, then two single crochets into the last stitch, turn (8 stitches).
3.5Chain one, work two single crochets into each stitch and turn (16 stitches).
3.6Chain one, work one single crochet into the first three stitches and two single crochets into the next stitch.
Repeat this pattern, four times in total (20 stitches).
3.7Chain one. Work one single crochet into each stitch across, turn. For two rows (20 stitches).
NOTE – Do not turn after the second row.
3.8Now you are going to work a row of stitches, across the ends, of the straight edge, of the slice.
Chain one.
Work one single crochet into each row end (14 stitches).
3.9Change to the bright yellow yarn. To do this, cut the old yarn, make a slip knot with the new yarn, and put this onto the end of your hook. Slip this loop through the original loop on your hook. Pull the tail of the cut yarn to tighten.
3.10Chain one. Work one single crochet into each stitch around the curved edge of the slice. This makes the lemon rind (22 stitches).
3.11Finish off and weave all the ends into the back of the slice.
Repeat steps 3.1 to 3.11 per Lemon Slice.
NOTE – We have used 11 slices. You can make more or less of these slices, as desired.
4 . Segments4.0This is made from its widest edge, tapering to a point, to create a triangular shape.
4.1With bright yellow yarn, chain five.
4.2Starting in the second chain from the hook, work one single crochet into each chain across (4 stitches).
4.3Chain one. Work a single crochet two together, into the first two stitches, then repeat for the remaining two stitches and turn (2 stitches).
4.4Chain one. Work a single crochet two together, into both stitches of the row (1 stitch).
4.5Finish off and weave the ends into the wrong side of the segment.
4.6Repeat steps 4.1 to 4.5 twice, creating another two segments.
You will need three segments per Lemon Slice. Repeat steps 4.1 to 4.6 until you have the required total.
5 . Finishing and Assembly5.1You will have noticed, while crocheting the Lemon Slices and Segments, that they tend to curl. To prevent this and to help set the shape, you need to block the Lemon Slices and Segments.
This is done by pinning the pieces onto a firm surface. I use a cork board for small pieces like these.
Gently stretch the pieces, if needed, to make them straight and even. Having a straight edge to line the slices up against, is particularly helpful. Spray everything with water, and allow them to dry naturally. I left mine overnight.
TIP – Use a spray starch or fabric stiffener, if preferred.
5.2Now you are going to attach the Segments to the Lemon Slices.
Take one Slice and three Segments. Check that you have the right sides facing upwards. Using a small brush, cover the back of the segments with a layer of glue. Position the Segments onto the Slice, and when you are happy that they are evenly spaced, press down firmly, with your hand.
5.3OPTIONAL – Take a length of bright yellow yarn and tie a knot at the end. Use this to sew two straight stitches into each Segment. Bring the needle up through the point of the segment and down through an opposite corner.
Repeat this again, coming up through the point of the Segment and down through the opposite corner. Do this for all three Segments and tie off.
NOTE – This stitching will help shape the Segments and give extra security.
Repeat steps 5.2 to 5.3 to attach all Segments to all Lemon Slices.
5.4Lie the Front Panel on a flat surface, with the right side facing up. Measure and mark 2 ½ inches down from the top edge of the panel. This is where the flap will come over the front of the pouch.
Arrange four Lemon Slices randomly below the marking, right sides up.
As the Lemon Slices have been crocheted with a small hook, they are firm and tight. This makes it difficult to get pins through them. I recommend taking a photo of your layout as reference, instead of trying to pin the pieces on.
5.5Leave one Lemon Slice in place and cut a length of bright yellow yarn. Knot the end.
TIP – If you don’t want knotted ends sticking out on the back of your panel, leave a longer tail, after the knot in your yarn. You can then weave this end into the back when you have finished stitching. This will hold the starting knot down and keep the end tucked in, out of the way.
5.6Stitch around the curved edge of the Lemon Slice, attaching it to the Front Panel, with small, tight, whipstitches. I prefer to work through only the back loops of the single crochet stitches, to help keep the sewing less visible. When you have sewn through all the yellow stitches on the Slice, tie off and weave in the ends.
5.7Repeat step 5.6 to attach the other three Slices to the Front Panel, using your photo for reference. (You may decide to change the positioning of some of the Slices as you add each one).
5.8Repeat step 5.6 using white yarn to attach the straight edges of all the Slices.
5.9Lie the Back Panel on a flat surface, with the right side facing up. Measure and mark 2 ½ inches down from the top edge of the panel. This 2 ½ inch piece will become the flap that folds over the front of the pouch.
Arrange five Lemon Slices randomly, around the bottom section of the Back Panel. Again, I recommend that you take a photo of your layout, instead of trying to pin the pieces on.
5.10Repeat steps 5.5 to 5.8 to attach the Lemon Slices to this panel.
NOTE – You will have two Lemon Slices left.
5.11Lay the Back Panel wrong side facing upward. Place the Front Panel on top, right side facing up, matching bottom edges. Pin.
NOTE – The Back Panel will be 2 ½ inches longer than the Front Panel.
5.12Cut a length of bright green yarn, knot the end and leave a tail to weave in later.
Starting at the top of the Front Panel, bring the needle through the first stitch, from the inside, out. Whipstitch through both loops, of the single crochet border, working down the side edge, joining your panels together.
5.13Continue around the corner, along the bottom edge and up the other side. When you reach the end of the final edge, tie off the yarn inside the pouch and weave in all the ends.
TIP – If you run out of yarn, tie off inside the pouch and weave in the end. Then continue with a fresh length of yarn.
5.14Fold the top of the Back Panel over the Front Panel.
Position the remaining two Lemon Slices as desired.
5.15Repeat steps 5.5 to 5.8 to attach the Lemon Slices.
NOTE – You are only attaching the Lemon Slices to the folded over section of the Back Panel. Do not stitch through the Front and Back Panel. You will either need to hold the flap up, while sewing, or fold the flap open, to avoid sewing through into the rest of the pouch.
5.16Open the flap and position four hook dots on the wrong side of the Back Panel top edge.
5.17Match up the loop dots and attach them, sticky side upwards, to the hook dots you have just stuck down.
Carefully fold the flap back over, making sure that it is straight, and press down to adhere the loop dots to the Front Panel.
TIP – Leave the hook and loop dots to adhere for 24 hours, before using.
