Description
No-Sew Tutu
Difficulty Level = Beginner
This No Sew Tutu is a great beginner pattern. Simple techniques, with clear instructions, it is a sew anyone can tackle. Unlike other patterns you won’t find pattern pieces to print. There’s no sewing involved at all which means it’s a great activity to do with the kids.

- Thread that matches your fabric
- Thread that matches your ribbon
- First you will need to know how long you want the tutu to be.
- If you can, measure from the child’s waist to the length you want the tutu to be.
- If you do not have the child in front of you, here are some approximate lengths for a knee length tutu for an average-sized child.
- Each strip of tulle will be folded in two for your final tutu. So to get the length you will need to cute your tulle to, multiply the length of your tutu by 2.
- For a relatively full tutu, you will need approximately 3 strips of tulle per inch of waist measurement. If you don’t want your tutu as full, then use 2 strips of tulle per inch of waist.
- If you can, measure the child to get an exact waist size in inches. Then multiply the number by 3.
- If you can’t measure the child, here are some approximate waist sizes and how many strips you will need.
Project OverviewOur Facebook group is a great place to get help, share your tips and creations! We are a friendly bunch, and we love to help and see what you have made.
Please read the full instructions before getting started.
Wash, dry, and press your fabric before starting your project. A bit of prep now prevents shrinking and means your garment will stay the same size you made it.
Never leave a child or baby unattended or allow to sleep in a garment made from one of our patterns with ties, snaps, buttons, or anything they could remove, choke on, or get caught on. Always use caution if you are unsure. We love our patterns, but we love your bundles of joy more!

Materials and ToolsTulle – the easiest way to purchase this is pre-cut into 6 inch width on a roll (see top picture). Alternatively, you can also get it in full width (see bottom picture). If you get it in full width, you’ll need to cut it into 6 inch strips.
NOTE – If you want to combine two colors of tulle, just split the estimates below in half for each color.
Ribbon – you’ll need enough to go around the child’s waist plus enough for the bow. You can either measure this on the child or use the estimates below. I prefer to use 1, 1 ½ or 2 inch wide elastic but you can use any width you like. The wider the ribbon, the more obvious the bow will be at the back. The narrower the ribbon, the more compact the knots of tulle will be on the waistline.

- + Instructions
- Find the center point of the ribbon. This is where you will start tie tulle strips on
- Fold the tulle in half, pinch the middle so you can tuck it into a knot around the ribbon
- Knot the tulle onto the ribbon from the center point outwards
- When the tutu is long enough, stop adding tulle and knot the ribbon to stop the tulle from sliding off. All done ☺
Quick Glance Cheat SheetSewing –
1 . TutuSeam Allowance
⅛ inch seam allowance included
1.1Fold your ribbon in half and mark the center point with a pin.
1.2Take the first piece of tulle. Fold it in half to get a center point. Then pinch the tulle width-wise at the center point.
1.3Keeping the center point pinched together, bend the tulle into a rough “U” shape.
1.4Place the U of tulle over the center point of your ribbon (remove the pin first).
1.5Bend the top of the U so it folds over the other side of the ribbon.
1.6Tuck the tails of the U into the bend so it forms a little knot.
1.7Tighten the knot.
1.8Repeat with the rest of the tulle going outwards from the center towards the edge.
1.9When the tutu is your desired width, stop adding tulle and make a knot.
TIP – as your child grows you can undo the knot, move it outwards and spread the tulle out again so they can keep wearing it.
