- Yarn choice depends on the effect you wish to create in your project. Apart from the color, there is fiber and weight options to consider.
- Wool, wool blends and acrylic yarns are warm and tend to have a fluffier finish. These are perfect for making cozy clothing, soft furnishings, hats, gloves etc. They are also great for soft toys that are designed to be cuddly.
- Cotton and cotton blend yarns have a smooth finish. This is good for small details and is especially popular for amigurumi patterns. It is ideal for pieces that are likely to be sucked or chewed by small children. Cotton is also cooler and lighter so is a good choice for warmer weather clothes.
- Yarn weights range from very thin and lacy, right up to ribbon style yarns, cord, and rope. Again, your choice here will depend on your project. Thinner weight yarns will give a delicate effect, so would be ideal for doilies, lacy details, or small, intricate pieces. Chunky, thick, yarns, such as cord, are a brilliant choice for projects like storage baskets, rugs, and plant holders. They work up quickly on a large project and are very sturdy and hardwearing.
- Many patterns will still work well with a substituted yarn, even if that yarn is a different weight, however, there will be a difference in the size and finish of your completed work, in comparison to the pattern sample.
- When buying yarn, you can find a lot of details, including weight and fiber content, on the band around the yarn, or on the product details page (if buying online). Retailers will sometimes give examples of what that particular yarn is most suitable for, along with recommended hook sizes, however, hook sizes in patterns may vary from those recommended. This is done to create the right effect for that project, which may require a tighter or looser gauge, than the suggested hook would provide. If in doubt, follow the hook size recommended in the pattern.
- If you do not have the suggested weight of yarn for the pattern you want to complete, you can use multiple strands of thinner yarns to make up the desired weight. For example, two strands of 4 ply yarn can be crocheted together, like one strand, to make 8 ply yarn. If you do this, you will need to work some sample swatches, with different hook sizes, to ensure that you can match the gauge in your pattern correctly.

0.1 . STITCH LIBRARY - Yarn over (yo)Seam Allowance
Hook Size 1B / 2.2mm – Test Square 1 inch = 7 stiches x 7 rows
0.1.0Each of the following stitches will be used in this pattern. The steps will show how to do them step-by-step, but you might prefer to get familiar with them before getting started.
NOTE – This pattern uses US crochet terms. If you typically use patterns using other country’s crochet patterns, please check stitch instructions to make sure you are using the same stitch that is called for in the pattern.
0.1.1Wrap the yarn around the hook from back to front.
0.2 . Chain (ch)0.2.1With a slip knot on your hook, yarn over.
0.2.2Pull your hook down and through the loop on your hook, leaving one loop.
0.3 . Slip Stitch (sl st)0.3.1Insert your hook into the top loop. Yarn over.
0.3.2Pull through the loop of yarn.
0.3.3Pull the loop of yarn through the first loop on your hook as well.
0.4 . Single Crochet (sc)0.4.1Insert your hook into the top loop, yarn over.
0.4.2Pull the loop of yarn through, yarn over again.
0.4.3Pull through both loops on your hook.
0.5 . Slip Knot0.5.1Leaving a tail (around 4-5 inches long) of yarn at the front of your hand, wrap the yarn loosely, around your first finger. Wrap the yarn from the front, crossing the yarn at the top of your finger.
0.5.2Insert you hook under the yarn on the right side. Hook the yarn on the left, pull it under the yarn on the right, twisting the hook as you pull it through.
0.5.3Carefully take the knot off your finger. Pull the free end, to tighten the knot.
0.5.4Pull the working yarn, to tighten the loop on your hook. Now you are ready to work.
0.6 . Finish off (fo)0.6.1Finish off by cutting the yarn and pulling the end through the loop on the hook. Pull this tight, to stop the stitches unravelling.
0.7 . HAND STITCHING - Attaching thread0.7.0The pattern also includes hand sewing techniques. We recommend using embroidery floss for these hand stitches. Use two strands from a six-strand embroidery floss so when both strands are threaded through the needle and folded over, the two strands will become 4 strands.
NOTE – The pictures below show the stitches being done on fabric. The methods are the same on yarn.
0.7.1Thread the needle and tie a knot in the end of the thread.
On the inside of one of the fabric pieces, put the needle through a tiny bit of fabric.
0.7.2Pull the thread almost all the way to the knot. Stop pulling, split the thread close to the knot creating a gap then slip the needle through the gap.
0.7.3Pull the thread taut. The thread should now be knotted to the fabric.
NOTE – Tying the thread to the fabric this way will prevent the knot from coming through the fabric as you stitch.
0.7.4Put the needle through to the right side or underside of the fabric depending on which side of the fabric the needle needs to be on for the next step.
0.8 . French Knots0.8.0This stitch is used to create small decorative knots. Don’t let French Knots scare you, they aren’t as scary as you may think.
0.8.1Thread the needle with colored embroidery floss/thread and attach to the inside of the fabric pieces, following the ‘Attaching Thread’ directions in the Hand Sewing Instructions above.
Push the needle to the underside of the fabric and then bring it to the right side of the fabric at the point you want to add the French knot. Pull the thread all the way to the right side.
0.8.2Working close to where the thread comes out of the fabric, wrap the thread around the needle three times.
NOTE – If you wrap the thread more than three times, the French knots can become loose or untidy.
0.8.3Carefully tighten the thread on the needle and pull the threads together on the needle. Holding the threads taut on the needle, push the needle into the fabric close to where you brought the needle to the right side of the fabric. Slowly pull the needle through to the underside. This will create a French Knot on the right side of the fabric.
NOTE – Do not push the thread back through the same hole as the working thread. Push it through just next to the original hole, leaving a little space of fabric between.
Repeat steps 0.8.1 to 0.8.3 for each French knot.
TIP – Cluster these together to create a dense, textured filling, or scatter them loosely to create a lightness to your embroidery. Creating individual French knots can give your design a little punctuation.
0.9 . Whipstitch0.9.0We use a whipstitch when sewing felt as it is an easy way to stitch flat seams, encasing the seam allowances in the stitching.
0.9.1Thread the needle with colored embroidery floss/thread and attach to the inside of the fabric pieces, following the ‘Attaching Thread’ directions in the Hand Sewing Instructions above.
TIP – To make the stitches even, mark your finger with lines ⅛ to ¼ inch apart. Use this to line up your stitches, matching the distance on your finger.
Put the needle through one of the pieces of the fabric so it comes out on the right side of the fabric about ⅛ to ¼ inch away from the edge. Then bring the needle over both pieces of fabric and insert it into the fabric ⅛ to ¼ inch from the edge. Pull the needle through to the underside of the fabric.
0.9.2Move the needle back over both pieces of fabric and put the needle back into the fabric about ⅛ to ¼ inch away from where it came up. Be sure to go through both layers. Pull the needle all the way through to the wrong side of the fabric and pull the thread taut.
0.9.3Repeat all the way around.
0.10 . NOTES0.10.1NOTE – It is advisable to read through each step, before you start crocheting, to ensure that you understand the step fully.
NOTE – Chain one and slip stitch, don’t count as stitches, in the whole of this pattern, so are not included in the stitch numbers.
NOTE – This pattern uses US crochet terms. If you typically use patterns using other country’s crochet patterns, please check stitch instructions to make sure you are using the same stitch that is called for in the pattern.
0.11 . PREPARATION0.11.1Sample Square
If you are a beginner, or are substituting with a different weight yarn, it may be helpful to work a sample square, to check your gauge is correct, for this pattern. You can try working with a larger or smaller hook size if your gauge needs adjusting.
To crochet the Popsicles, follow these steps:
1 . Lemon Drip: Base1.1Using pale yellow yarn and your 1B / 2.2mm hook, chain eleven.
1.2Starting in the second chain from the hook, work one single crochet into each chain, Turn (10 stitches).
1.3Chain one, work one single crochet into each stitch, turn. Repeat until a total of eleven rows have been worked (10 stitches per row).
NOTE – Do not turn after working the eleventh row.
1.4Moving down the left side of the piece first, work around the edge, to make a border.
Chain one, work one single crochet into each row end (12 stitches).
Work two single crochets into the corner stitch and continue to single crochet along the bottom edge, (8 stitches).
Work two single crochets into the corner again, then work single crochets up the other side (12 stitches).
Work two single crochets into the corner, single crochet along the last side, (8 stitches) then work two single crochets into the last corner.
Slip stitch into the chain one, at the start of the border and finish off.
Weave in the tail ends.
Repeat steps 1.1 to 1.4 to create a second Base.
2 . Lemon Drip: Drip Top2.1With white yarn and your 1B / 2.20mm hook, chain four.
2.2Starting in the second chain from the hook, work one single crochet into the three chains, turn (3 stitches).
2.3Chain one. Work one single crochet into the first two stitches, then two single crochets into the last stitch, chain two and turn (4 stitches and 2 chains).
2.4Starting in the second chain from the hook, work two single crochets into the chain, then one single crochet into the remaining four stitches. Chain five and turn (6 stitches and 5 chains).
2.5Starting in the second chain from the hook, work one single crochet into each stitch of the row, and turn (10 stitches).
2.6Chain one.
Work two single crochets into the first stitch, then one single crochet, into the next eight stitches of the row.
Finish off (10 stitches).
2.7Join the same yarn at the opposite end of the row you just finished (do not turn the work). To do this, insert your hook where you are going to start, make a slip knot with the new yarn and put it on the end of your hook. Slip stitch the new yarn through to the front of your work and chain one.
2.8Work one single crochet into the next eight stitches of the row and turn (8 stitches).
2.9Chain one. Skip the first stitch, then work one single crochet into the remaining seven stitches. Turn (7 stitches).
2.10Chain one. Work one single crochet into each stitch, chain three and turn (7 stitches and 3 chains).
2.11Starting in the second chain from the hook, work one single crochet into the next eight stitches. Skip the last stitch and turn (8 stitches).
2.12Chain one. Work one single crochet into the first six stitches, skip the last two stitches, turn (6 stitches).
2.13Chain one. Work one single crochet into the first five stitches. Skip the last stitch and turn (5 stitches).
2.14Chain one. Skip the first stitch and work one single crochet, into the remaining four stitches (4 stitches).
NOTE – Do not turn.
2.15You are going to crochet around the edge of the piece to create a border. Working to the left, begin by crocheting along the bottom drip edge. Work one single crochet into the first two stitches, then three single crochets into the end of the first drip.
Continue along, working one single crochet into the next six stitches as you move towards the second drip.
Work three single crochets into the second drip end, then one single crochet into the remaining six stitches along this edge (20 stitches).
2.16Continue crocheting around the rest of the outer edge of the piece. Work one single crochet into the end of each row around. Slip stitch into the chain made at the start of step 2.14. Finish off (14 stitches).
2.17Weave in all the tail ends.
Repeat steps 2.1 to 2.17 to create a second Drip Top.
3 . Lemon Drip: Stick3.1With light brown yarn and your 1B / 2.20mm hook, chain three.
3.2Starting in the second chain from the hook, work one single crochet, into both chains and turn (2 stitches).
3.3Chain one, work one single crochet into both stitches, turn. For six rows.
NOTE – Do not turn after working the sixth row.
3.4You will work a border around the Stick, to make it rounded. Chain one.
Moving down the left side, work one single crochet into each row end (7 stitches).
Work one single crochet into each of the three starting chains at the bottom (3 stitches).
Then finish by working one single crochet into each stitch up the right side (7 stitches).
Finish off.
3.5Weave in the tail ends.
Repeat steps 3.1 to 3.5 to create a second Stick.
4 . Lemon Drip: Finishing and Assembly4.1Block all the pieces of the popsicle. To do this, pin each piece out onto a flat, firm surface. I use a cork board for this. Make sure all the pieces are straight and square. You can gently stretch pieces if needed.
Then spray everything with water and allow them to air dry naturally (I usually leave mine overnight). Doing this will help to set the shape of the pieces and stop them from curling.
4.2Embroider French knots across the front of the Drip Top pieces. Use one color of stranded cotton at a time. Sew the knots randomly, to give the most natural effect. You can sew as many, or as few knots as you prefer.
NOTE – If you don’t want to embroider the French knots, you could always sew on mini beads, or buttons, instead.
4.3Pin or clip the Drip Top onto the Base, so that the top sticks up above the Base.
4.4Whipstitch through the back loops of the single crochet stitches, around the bottom edge of the Drip Top from one side to the other (shown with pins)
4.5Place a Stick onto the wrong side of the Base, at the center bottom edge. You can leave as much of the stick showing as you like.
Sew the Stick using whipstitches through the back of the crochet stitches on the Base, as you attach the Stick. This way your stitches won’t be visible from the right side.
Repeat steps 4.1 to 4.5 to attach the second Drop Top and Stick to the other Base.
4.6Cut a 2-inch piece of ribbon. Fold it in half to create a loop. Center the loop onto the wrong side at the top edge of the Drip Top and stitch in place, in the same way that you attached the Stick.
4.7Place both pieces wrong sides together. Pin.
4.8Starting at the Stick, sew both pieces together using a length of the same color yarn. Whipstitch through the back loops of the single crochet border.
4.9Using the same whipstitch technique, join the sides of the Base using matching yarn.
4.10Stitch the Drip Top pieces together starting at one open side and stitching half way.
4.11Push approximately three large pinches of stuffing inside the popsicle.
4.12Finish sewing the Drip Top pieces together. Weave in any ends.
4.13Attach the key chain clip or attachment of your choice, through the ribbon loop at the top of the Popsicle.
Your Lemon Drip Popsicle is finished!
5 . Fruit Stripe: Main5.1With bright yellow yarn and your 1B / 2.20mm hook, chain eleven.
5.2Starting in the second chain from the hook, work one single crochet into each stitch across. Turn (10 stitches).
5.3Chain one. Work one single crochet into each stitch, for four rows (10 stitches per row).
5.4Change color, to the bright red yarn. To do this, cut the old yarn. Make a slip knot with the new yarn and put this onto the end of your hook.
Slip stitch the new yarn, through to the front of the work. Pull the tail of the old yarn to tighten.
5.5Chain one. Work one single crochet into each stitch across. Turn. For five rows (10 stitches per row).
5.6Change color to bright blue, using the same technique as in step 5.4.
Chain one, work one single crochet into each stitch, turn. For two rows (10 stitches per row).
5.7Chain one. Skip the first stitch and work one single crochet into the next eight stitches. Skip the last stitch and turn (8 stitches).
5.8Chain one. Skip the first stitch and work one single crochet into the next six stitches. Skip the last stitch and turn (6 stitches).
5.9Chain one. Skip the first stitch and work one single crochet into the next four stitches. Skip the last stitch. Finish off (4 stitches).
5.10Weave in all the tail ends.
5.11Now you will work a border around the edge of the piece, to give the smooth, rounded, popsicle shape. Join the yellow yarn in the same way as step 5.4, on the right side, in the end of the bottom row.
Chain one. Work one single crochet into each stitch, of the row ends, up the side of the yellow section (5 stitches).
5.12Change color (as in step 5.4) to red and work one single crochet into each stitch up the side of the red section (5 stitches).
5.13Change color (as in step 5.4) to blue and work one single crochet into the ends of the first two, blue rows.
You will then work three single crochets, diagonally up, to create the round top of the popsicle. Work one single crochet into the skipped stitch on the next row, one single crochet into the side of the stitch, on the end of the next row, then one single crochet into the skipped stitch on the next row (3 stitches).
5.14Work one single crochet into each stitch across the top, (4 stitches).
Repeat the three single crochets, diagonally, down the other side of the popsicle (as in step 5.13), (3 stitches).
Work one single crochet into each of the last two blue ends, (2 stitches).
5.15Change color (as in step 5.4) to red and work one single crochet in each stitch of the second red section (5 stitches).
5.16Change color (as in step 5.4) to yellow. Work one single crochet into each stitch down the side of the yellow section (5 stitches).
Work two single crochets into the corner, one single crochet into each stitch along the bottom edge, (8 stitches) and two single crochets into the second corner.
Slip stitch into the chain one, at the start of the border and finish off.
5.17Weave in all the tail ends.
Repeat steps 5.1 to 5.17 to create a second Main piece.
6 . Fruit Stripe: Stick6.1With light brown yarn and your 1B / 2.20mm hook, chain three.
6.2Starting in the second chain from the hook, work one single crochet, into both chains and turn (2 stitches).
6.3Chain one, work one single crochet into both stitches, turn. For six rows.
NOTE – Do not turn after working the sixth row.
6.4You will work a border around the Stick, to make it rounded. Chain one.
Moving down the left side, work one single crochet into each row end (7 stitches).
Work one single crochet into each of the three starting chains at the bottom (3 stitches).
Then finish by working one single crochet into each stitch up the right side (7 stitches).
6.5Weave in the tail ends.
Repeat steps 6.1 to 6.5 to create a second Stick.
7 . Fruit Stripe: Finishing and Assembly7.1Block all the pieces of the popsicle.
7.2Place a Stick onto the wrong side of the Main piece, at the center bottom edge. You can leave as much of the stick showing as you like.
Sew the Stick using whipstitches through the back of the crochet stitches on the Base, as you attach the Stick. This way your stitches won’t be visible from the right side.
Repeat to attach the second Stick to the other Main piece.
7.3Cut a 2-inch piece of ribbon. Fold it in half to create a loop. Center the loop onto the wrong side at the top edge of the Main piece and stitch in place, in the same way that you attached the Stick.
7.4Place both Main pieces wrong sides together. Pin.
7.5Starting with the Stick, sew both pieces together using a length of the same color yarn. Whipstitch through the back loops of the single crochet border.
7.6Using the same Whipstitch technique, sew around, the yellow and red stripes joining the popsicles, changing color as needed, to match each stripe. Start by sewing up both sides of the yellow stripe, then both sides of the red strip.
NOTE – Do not stitch the blue stripe.
7.7Stitch approximately half of the blue stripe.
7.8Push approximately three large pinches of stuffing inside the popsicle.
7.9Finish sewing the top of the popsicle. Weave in the tail ends.
7.10Attach the key chain clip or attachment of your choice, through the ribbon loop at the top of the Popsicle.
Your Fruit Stripe Popsicle is finished!
8 . Bitten Raspberry Cream: Main8.1With cream yarn and your 1B / 2.20mm hook, chain eleven.
8.2Starting in the second chain from the hook, work one single crochet into each chain. Turn (10 stitches).
8.3Chain one, work one single crochet into each stitch across. Turn (10 stitches).
8.4Change color, to the dark pink yarn. To do this, cut the old yarn. Make a slip knot with the new yarn and put this onto the end of your hook.
Slip stitch the new yarn, through to the front of the work. Pull the tail of the old yarn to tighten.
Chain one and work one single crochet into each stitch, turn. For ten rows (10 stitches per row).
8.5Chain one. Work one single crochet into each of the next eight stitches, skip the last two stitches and turn (8 stitches).
8.6Chain one. Skip the first stitch, work one single crochet into the next six stitches. Skip the last stitch and turn (6 stitches).
8.7Chain one. Skip the first stitch. Work one single crochet into the remaining five stitches and turn (5 stitches).
8.8Chain one. Skip the first stitch, work one single crochet into the next three stitches. Skip the last stitch and finish off (3 stitches).
8.9Weave in the tail ends.
8.10Now you will crochet a border around the edge. Join the dark pink yarn (as in step 8.4) on the right side, three rows from the bottom edge (where the pink section begins).
Chain one. Work one single crochet into each of the row ends, of the next ten rows (10 stitches).
8.11You will then work three single crochets, diagonally up, to create the round top of the popsicle. Work one single crochet into the skipped stitch on the next row, one single crochet into the side of the stitch, on the end of the next row, then one single crochet into the skipped stitch on the next row (3 stitches).
Then one single crochet into the three stitches across the top. Finish off.
8.12Join the same yarn, (as in step 8.4) after the bitten section, missing the first row.
Work one single crochet into each stitch down the other side (9 stitches).
8.13Change color to cream (as in step 8.4) and work one single crochet into the next two row ends.
Work two single crochets into the corner, one single crochet into each stitch across the bottom edge, two single crochets into the second corner and one single crochet into the remaining two row ends (16 stitches).
Slip stitch into the chain one at the start and finish off.
8.14Weave in all the tail ends.
8.15Repeat steps 8.1 to 8.14 to create a second Main piece.
NOTE – When making your second Main piece you will need to turn it over before working the border so that you are creating the bitten section on the opposite side. That way when they are assembled wrong sides together the bite will be on the same side.
