- +Preparation
- Interfacing / Stabilizer – Ultra-firm heavyweight fusible stabilizer e.g. Peltex 71F / Vilene S133 and/or Midweight fusible woven interfacing e.g. Pellon SF 101 Shape Flex / Vilene G700. If you are using a lightweight fabric you will want to use a heavier interfacing / stabilizer to create a firm bag. You can use a heavier interfacing on the Main bag pieces and a lighter interfacing on the linings or the same interfacing on both. You will need approximately the amounts listed below (in YARDS):

- Bias binding – double fold bias tape that is ⅜ inch wide when finished. You can buy/make ¾ inch wide single fold bias tape and fold in half down its center line. You will need approximately the amounts listed below (in YARDS):

Please read the full instructions before getting started.
Wash, dry, and press your fabric before starting your project. A bit of prep now prevents shrinking and means your garment will stay the same size you made it.
Never leave a child or baby unattended or allow to sleep in a garment made from one of our patterns with ties, snaps, buttons, or anything they could remove, choke on, or get caught on. Always use caution if you are unsure. We love our patterns, but we love your bundles of joy more!

Tools needed are needle, pins, iron, disappearing ink pen, bodkin or safety pin, cutting mat and rotary cutter or scissors, zipper foot, optional washaway sewing tape and a sewing machine.
Printing Your PatternSettings
The pattern is a separate download. Choose either the US letter paper, A4 paper, or A0 paper size based on the printer you wish to use. If you are in the US or Canada then your printer will likely use US letter paper. Other regions normally use A4 paper. Some people prefer to print their patterns at a print shop: A0 is best in this case.
Print at 100%.
On the second page, you will find a 1-inch and a 3-inch square test box. Print this page first, on its own, and measure these squares.
Once you are happy that the test box is accurate, print the rest of the pattern pages.

- INTERFACING – Apply interfacing to wrong side of pieces.
- OPTIONAL BIAS BINDING – Follow this free DIY Bias Binding tutorial to create bias binding.
- FUSIBLE FLEECE – Lay Main Top wrong side facing up. Place Fusible Fleece on top, centered. Use manufacturer’s instructions to apply Fusible Fleece. Repeat with Main Bottom, Back, Upper Zipper and Lower Zipper pieces.
- ZIPPER – Find and mark center of zipper, Upper Zipper Lining and Main Upper Zipper. Lay Upper Zipper Lining right side facing up. Layer pieces in this order: Lining facing up, zipper facing up, Main facing down, matching raw edges and centers. Stitch. Flip Main Upper Zipper up over zipper. Press. Pin raw edges. OPTIONAL Topstitch. OPTIONAL Baste raw edges. Repeat with Lower Zipper Lining and Main pieces. NOTE – This will now be called the Front.
- ATTACHING BACK – Lay Back Lining right side facing up. Place Front on top, right side facing up, matching long raw edges. Place Main Back on top, right side facing down, matching raw edges. Stitch. Flip Back pieces over, wrong sides of Main and Lining together. Press. Topstitch. Move Back Lining out of the way. Create memory hem on raw edge of Main Back. Pin. Place Back Lining right sides together with Front Lining, matching raw edges. Stitch. Take memory hem edge and place it over Main Front. Topstitch.
- TOP AND BOTTOM – Place Main Bottom and Lining wrong sides together. Baste. Snip into seam allowance. Find and mark quarter points.
- Repeat with Main Top and Lining pieces.
- OPTIONAL KEY TAB – Use double fold binding method to create Key Tab. Topstitch each long edge. Thread through keyring. Fold over, matching short ends. Baste. Place Key Tab the Main Top at a quarter point, matching raw edges. Baste.
- OPTIONAL HANDLE – Use double fold binding method to create Handle. Topstitch each long edge. Place Handle on top of bag matching it to two quarter points. Baste.
- BAG CONSTRUCTION – Turn Front wrong side out. Find and mark quarter points on top edge of Front. Place Main Top onto Main Front right sides together, matching raw edges and quarter points. Stitch. Open zipper. Repeat to attach Main Bottom onto Main Front.
- FINISHING – Trim the seam allowance on the Top and Bottom in half. Finish both raw edges using binding. Turn right side out.
- XS – 5 inches
- S – 20 inches
- M – 25 inches
- L – 39 inches
- XL – 5 inches

0.1Interfacing
Using the manufacturer’s instructions, apply interfacing to the wrong side of the Back, OPTIONAL Key Tab and OPTIONAL Handle pieces. If you are adding OPTIONAL interfacing to the Upper and Lower Zipper pieces, do so now.
0.2OPTIONAL Bias Binding
If you are not using store bought binding, you will need to create double fold binding to bind the inside raw edges of the bag.
Follow this free DIY Bias Binding tutorial to create the bias binding.
0.3Zipper
If your zipper is too long, cut it to the correct length. The correct lengths per size are listed below:
Stitch a bar tack to close the zipper. A bar tack is
a very short and dense zigzag stitches used to
reinforce stressed seams on a garment or to create a zipper stop on a zipper. Start by using a regular straight stitch over the end of the zipper. Backstitch back to your starting point.
Change your machine setting to a narrow and very
dense zigzag stitch (2-3mm wide, 0.3-0.5mm long).
Sew from your starting point to the end point.
1 . Fusible Fleece1.1Lay the Main Top wrong side facing up.
Place the Fusible Fleece on top, centered.
1.2Use the manufacturer’s instructions to apply the Fusible Fleece.
1.3Repeat steps 1.1 to 1.2 with the Main Bottom, Back, Upper Zipper and Lower Zipper pieces.
2 . Zipper2.1Find and mark the center of the zipper, Upper Zipper Lining and Main Upper Zipper.
2.2Lay the Upper Zipper Lining right side facing up. Place the zipper right side facing up, matching centers and matching the top raw edge of the Upper Zipper Lining with the zipper tape.
Pin.
TIP – To help prevent the zipper from shifting or the fabric from distorting while sewing, apply washaway sewing tape to secure the zipper.
2.3Place the Main Upper Zipper on top of the zipper, right side facing down, matching the top raw edge with the zipper tape.
Pin.
The pieces will now be layered in this order: Lining facing up, zipper facing up, Main facing down.
2.4Using a zipper foot on the sewing machine, stitch using ¼ inch seam allowance.
2.5Flip the Main Upper Zipper up over the zipper, so the wrong sides of the Main and Lining are together. Press.
Pin the raw edges.
2.6OPTIONAL – Topstitch along the zipper tape, ⅛ inch from the fabric edge.
2.7OPTIONAL – Baste along the raw edges, ¼ inch from the fabric edge.
TIP – Basting is just like normal stitching except the stitches need to be long and loose so that they can be removed later, if needed. Stitch within the seam allowance, so that the basting stitches are not seen in the final garment, while keeping the stitches loose enough to pull out just in case they are visible. The purpose is to hold a piece of fabric in place until that section is properly sewn. Set the machine to a long loose stitch. Test it on a piece of fabric first to make sure that the stitches can easily be removed. Do not backstitch at either end. Leave the ends loose, with approximately 1 inch of thread tails at either end of the stitching.
2.8Repeat steps 2.1 to 2.7 with the Lower Zipper Lining and Main pieces, attaching them to the other side of the zipper.
NOTE – This will now be called the Front.
3 . Attaching Back3.1Lay the Back Lining right side facing up. Place the Front on top, right side facing up, matching long raw edges. Place the Main Back on top, right side facing down, matching raw edges. Pin.
The Front will be sandwiched between the Main Back and Lining.
3.2Stitch using a ½ inch seam allowance.
3.3Flip the Back pieces over, so the wrong sides of the Main and Lining are together. Press.
3.4Topstitch using a ⅛ inch seam allowance.
3.5Move the Back Lining out of the way. Fold the raw edge of the Main Back over by ½ inch to the wrong side. Press, creating a memory hem.
NOTE – A memory hem is where you fold and press your hem, but do not actually stitch it yet. We do this so that fold lines are pressed into the Main Back. It is much easier to do this now, than to try and press the hem later when it is stitched to the Front.
3.6Pin the memory hem in place.
3.7Place the Back Lining right sides together with the Front Lining, matching raw edges. Pin.
Stitch using a ½ inch seam allowance.
3.8Take the memory hem edge of the Main Back and place it over the Main Front, enclosing the seam. Pin.
3.9Topstitch using a ⅛ inch seam allowance.
4 . Top and Bottom4.1Place Main Bottom and Lining wrong sides together. Pin.
4.2Baste using ¼ inch seam allowance.
NOTE – If you desire to quilt your bag do so now.
4.3Snip into the seam allowance, being careful not to cut into the stitching.
4.4Find and mark the quarter points.
4.5Repeat steps 4.1 to 4.5 with the Main Top and Lining pieces.
If you are adding the OPTIONAL Key Tab, follow below. If you are not adding the OPTIONAL Key Tab, skip to step 6 to add the OPTIONAL Handle, or skip to step 7.
5 . OPTIONAL Key Tab5.1If you are familiar with making double fold bias tape, please use this. If not, don’t worry, just follow along here!
Fold the Key Tab in half lengthwise, wrong sides together.
5.2Press.
5.3Open the Key Tab, then fold the two long sides into the middle and press.
5.4Refold the Key Tab along the center edge, folding the raw edges to the inside.
5.5Pin.
5.6Topstitch each long edge using ⅛ inch seam allowance.
5.7Thread the Key Tab through the keyring. Fold the Key Tab over, matching up the short ends to form a loop. Pin.
NOTE – A swivel clasp can be used instead of a keyring.
5.8Baste the two layers together at the raw edge using a ⅛ inch seam allowance.
5.9Place your Key Tab onto the Main Top at a quarter point, matching raw edges. Pin.
5.10Baste using ¼ inch seam allowance.
6 . OPTIONAL Handle6.1If you are familiar with making double fold bias tape, please use this. If not, don’t worry, just follow along here! If you have sewn the OPTIONAL Key Tab you will be repeating steps 5.1 to 5.7.
Fold the Handle in half lengthwise, wrong sides together.
6.2Press.
6.3Open the Handle, then fold the two long sides into the middle and press.
6.4Refold the Handle along the center edge, folding the raw edges to the inside.
6.5Pin.
6.6Topstitch each long edge using ⅛ inch seam allowance.
6.7Place your Handle onto the right side of the Main Top, centering it across two quarter points, matching raw edges. Pin.
6.8Baste across each side of the Handle using ¼ inch seam allowance.
7 . Bag Construction7.1Turn the Front wrong side out. Find and mark the quarter points on the top edge of the Front.
TIP – Start with the center for the Back piece as the first quarter point. Then mark the rest. We recommend matching this quarter point to the quarter point where the OPTIONAL Key Tab is attached on the Main Top.
7.2Place the Main Top onto the Main Front right sides together, matching raw edges and quarter points. Pin.
NOTE – If you have added the OPTIONAL Key Tab and/or Handle, check these are not caught when pinning.
NOTE – Make sure you have pinned the Main Top onto the Main Front on the Upper Zipper to avoid your prints being upside down if you have used a directional print.
7.3Stitch using a ½ inch seam allowance.
7.4Open your zipper.
7.5Repeat steps 7.1 to 7.4 to attach the Main Bottom onto the Main Front.
8 . Finishing8.1Trim the seam allowance on the Top and Bottom in half.
8.2Open up your bias binding. Fold the short edge ½ inch over to the wrong side.
8.3Place the binding onto the Top Lining matching raw edges. Pin.
8.4Continue pinning all around the Top Lining, overlapping the end of the binding by ½ inch.
8.5Stitch along the fold, using a ¼ inch seam allowance.
8.6Fold the binding up to the stitch line.
Fold the overlapped piece over the folded edge of the binding. This will create a neat finish.
8.7Fold the binding over the seam allowance, enclosing the raw edges. Pin.
8.8You will now “stitch in the ditch”, stitching directly along the folded edge of the binding. This creates a neat and pretty finish.
8.9Repeat steps 8.1 to 8.8 to enclose the raw edge of the Bottom seam.
8.10Turn the bag right side out.
