- Interfacing – Since this is used to give structure to the hat, if you are using a heavier weight fabric, you can use light to medium weight interfacing, but if you are using a lighter weight fabric, just as quilting cotton, you will want a heavy weight interfacing. You will need just less than the amount of fabric.
- Thread to match
- Brim – Fabric cut 2, Interfacing cut 1
- Cone – Fabric cut 1, Interfacing cut 1
- OPTIONAL Decorations – Cut out as many or as few decorative pieces as you’d like.
Project OverviewSpooktastic Hat
Difficulty Level = Beginner
The Spooktastic hat has four height options and can be adjusted to fit any head size from child to adult. There are two brim widths to choose from: wizard or witch
Our Facebook group is a great place to get help, share your tips and creations! We are a friendly bunch, and we love to help and see what you have made.
Please read the full instructions before getting started.
Wash, dry, and press your fabric before starting your project. A bit of prep now prevents shrinking and means your garment will stay the same size you made it.
Never leave a child or baby unattended or allow to sleep in a garment made from one of our patterns with ties, snaps, buttons, or anything they could remove, choke on, or get caught on. Always use caution if you are unsure. We love our patterns, but we love your bundles of joy more!

To determine your size, measure your head circumference around where you’d like the brim of your hat to sit. Then measure the height of how tall you’d like the hat. Hat height is a personal preference. For a dramatic look, go for the tallest pattern piece. For a more practical height for children or for running around, go for one of the shorter heights. You can mix and match any head circumference with any height.
For example, if your head measures 16 inches in circumference, use the 16 inch diameter pattern pieces. And if you’d like an average height hat, go for the 12 or 15 inch height.
You’ll also find some extra pattern pieces for if you’d like to add a spider, buckle, bat, or cat decoration to your hat.
Materials and ToolsHat – You can use nearly any woven fabric for the hat. Do not use a knit fabric as it will stretch.
OPTIONAL Decorations – If you wish to use the extra decorations (spider, buckle, bat & cat), you will need a non-fraying fabric such as felt as they aren’t finished around the edges, you just cut and stick them on. You could also decorate with any other fabric, tulle, mesh, ribbon or trim. Whatever your imagination can come up with!

Printing Your PatternSettings
The pattern is a separate download. Choose either the US letter paper, A4 paper, or A0 paper size based on the printer you wish to use. If you are in the US or Canada then your printer will likely use US letter paper. Other regions normally use A4 paper. Some people prefer to print their patterns at a print shop: A0 is best in this case.
Print at 100%
On the second page, you will find a 1-inch and a 3-inch square test box. Print this page first, on its own, and measure these squares.
Once you are happy that the test box is accurate, print the rest of the pattern pages.
Please follow this video for information and assistance on assembling this pattern.
Also, please note that some Rebecca Page patterns and projects also come with cut files and a printable design page which you can use to plan your project if you wish. These are provided in a separate section below to avoid any confusion!

If you wish to measure your own hat to fit, skip to the first section to create your own measurements and custom sized hat pieces.
Cutting Checklist:
- + Instructions
- Measure your head circumference.
- Determine your preferred hat height and add 1 ½ inches.
- Tape together 4-6 pieces of paper. Near one edge, mark a point and measure the number from step 2 down, repeatedly, creating an arch that is the length from step 1. Along one edge of the Cone, measure out ½ inch and draw a line, connecting it to the starting point and arch. Along the other edge, measure 1 ½ inches and connect it as well. This is your final Cone pattern.
- Determine the radius of your inner Brim piece by dividing your number from step 1 by 6.28 and rounding up to the nearest ¼ inch.
- On the corner of a piece of paper, draw another arch, measuring from the corner the rounded radius from step 4. Draw a full quarter circle.
- Determine how wide you’d like Brim, usually 4-5 inches for a witch and 2-3 inches for a wizard. Add 1 inch for seam allowance. Measure this distance from your rounded radius arch and draw another quarter circle. This is your final Brim piece. When you cut this piece out, fold your fabric both horizontally and vertically.
- INTERFACING – Apply interfacing to the wrong size of one Brim piece and Cone piece.
- BRIM – Sew Brim pieces right sides together. Clip ¼ inch snips every ½ inch on inner circle and trim seam allowance of outer circle. Also snip the arch of the Cone piece. Turn Brim right sides out and press.
- CONE – Right sides together, sew the straight side of the Cone. Clip tip and trim seam allowance. Turn right sides out, pressing tip out fully.
- ATTACHING THE BRIM – Quarter the inside circle of the Brim and the bottom circle of the Cone. Align and pin these together. Sew this seam. OPTIONAL: Topstitch this seam up. Reshape hate and enjoy!!
- OPTIONAL DECORATIONS – RIBBON – sew, glue, or tie a ribbon at the base of the Cone. If desired, use the optional buckle included in the pattern. SILHOUETTES – cut out your silhouette from felt or a non-fraying fabric. Glue or topstitch onto the Cone or Brim. TULLE, MESH OR NETTING – add one of these around your Cone or Brim either before or after sewing with glue, topstitching, or tying.

Sewing –
0 . PreparationSeam Allowance
½ inch seam allowance included – Top stitching ⅛ inch
0.1If you are using the pattern pieces provided, skip to the interfacing preparation step, under Sewing Instructions. If you would prefer to make your own custom pattern pieces, follow the instructions below.
1 . Creating your Own Pattern1.1Measure your head circumference. This should be the distance around the crown of your head, where the hat will sit.
Determine what height hat you would like. If creating your own pattern pieces, add 1 ½ inches to this for seam allowance.
Tape together 4 to 6 pieces of paper to create one large piece.
Marking a point near the top edge, measure down the length you determined in step 2 and draw a line. This is the height of your hat.
1.2We are now going to draw an arc. Keeping the top of your ruler on the top of your line, swing it diagonally out to the side. Mark the same length again with a dot.
Again, keeping the top of your ruler on the top of your line, swing it in about an inch and mark the same length with a dot.
Continue marking this length from your original mark until you have an arc of dots. Connect the dots so you have a curve.
Measure the curve with a measuring tape and mark your head circumference, from step 1. From the start of the measuring tape to where you’ve marked your head circumference is the length of curve we need.
1.3From the straight edge along one side, measure ½ inch and draw another line. This is your seam allowance.
With a straight line, connect this new seam allowance line to your original mark and the arch.
1.4From the other edge, measure out 1 ½ inches, draw a line and connect that as well. This is your seam allowance on this side, plus a little ease so the hat isn’t skin tight while wearing it.
This is now your Cone piece. Cut around it.
1.5We are now going back to geometry.
TECHNICAL EXPLANATION – We will use the equation circumference = 2 x π x radius (π = 3.14). Since we are using the measurement from step 1 for circumference, we rearrange to determine the radius of the circle as circumference/(2 x π) = radius.
SIMPLE EXPLANATION: Take the number from step 1 and divide by 6.28.
Once you have done this math, round up to the closest ¼ inch.
On a corner of a piece of paper, measure the rounded radius you calculated in step 4 from the corner point all the way from one edge of the paper to the other, creating a quarter circle.
Use the same technique we did earlier by keeping the tip of the ruler in the corner of the page and swinging it from one side of the page to the other, marking regularly.
1.6Determine how wide you would like your Brim. We recommend about 4-5 inches for witches and 2-3 inches for wizards, but this can be however wide you’d like it to be.
Whatever number you have chosen, add 1 inch for seam allowance. Measure this distance from the radius line you’ve drawn into a quarter circle and draw another quarter circle.
You now have your Brim piece.
1.7You have a quarter circle pattern piece now. You can either trace this in quarters onto a new piece of paper so you have a full circle (like in the printed pattern pieces).
Alternatively you can fold your fabric (or interfacing) in half horizontally, then in half again vertically.
Your quarter circle Brim piece should now match up with the corner of your folded fabric and will create a full circle when cut out.

0.0Interfacing
Apply interfacing to the wrong side of your Cone pattern and one of your Brim pieces. Make sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your interfacing.
1 . Brim1.1Line up your two Brim pieces, right sides together. Pin and sew around the outer edge.
1.2On the inner circle, cut ¼ inch snips every ½ inch or so all the way around. Be careful not to snip too far, or you will end up with a hole after you sew.
Repeat these snips on the bottom, rounded edge of your Cone piece.
1.3Trim the outer edge seam of the Brim piece. Be careful not to trim too close to your seam, or you will end up with a hole.
You can use pinking shears here to help prevent fraying of woven fabrics.
1.4Turn the Brim right sides out and iron well. Try your best to get the seam right in the middle when ironing for the smoothest Brim.
OPTIONAL – Topstitch ⅛ inch from outer edge of Brim to keep the edge crisp.
2 . Cone2.1Fold the Cone piece right sides together and align the long straight edges. Pin and sew this line.
2.2Clip the tip and trim the seam allowance, being very careful not to cut any stitches.
2.3Turn the Cone right side out, pressing the tip out with a blunt object.
3 . Attaching the Brim3.1On the inner circle of the Brim, mark quarter points.
TIP – An easy way to do this is to fold the Brim flat in half, and mark or pin the points. The fold again, matching those points, then mark or pin the new points.
3.2Repeat step 3.1 for the bottom circle of the Cone.
3.3Matching up quarter points, pin Cone to Brim, right sides together.
Add additional pins as necessary to secure these circles before sewing.
3.4Sew this seam.
3.5OPTIONAL – Topstitch this seam allowance up, onto the Cone of the hat.
3.6Reshape the hat and enjoy!!
4 . OPTIONAL Decorations4.1RIBBON – Sew, glue, or tie a ribbon to the base of the Cone. You can choose to use the optional buckle included in your pattern to thread your ribbon through.
SILHOUETTES – Print off one of the provided decorations or another silhouette, cut it from felt or a non-fraying fabric. Glue or topstitch around the edges onto the Cone or Brim of your hat.
TULLE, MESH, OR NETTING – Add one of these around your Cone and/or Brim, either before sewing or after with glue, topstitching or tying.
