Project OverviewStocking Advent Calendar
Difficulty Level = Beginner
Create your own advent calendar made from hanging stockings. Each numbered stocking is attached to a dowel which is connected with cord, ready to hang. There are three shapes to choose from, each slightly different in shape and size. Mix and match them for a unique look. Pop little gifts for each day of your count down for your little ones, or grown ups to enjoy.
Our Facebook group is a great place to get help, share your tips and creations! We are a friendly bunch, and we love to help and see what you have made.
Please read the full instructions before getting started.
Wash, dry, and press your fabric before starting your project. A bit of prep now prevents shrinking and means your garment will stay the same size you made it.
Never leave a child or baby unattended or allow to sleep in a garment made from one of our patterns with ties, snaps, buttons, or anything they could remove, choke on, or get caught on. Always use caution if you are unsure. We love our patterns, but we love your bundles of joy more!

Printing Your PatternSettings
The pattern is a separate download. Choose either the US letter paper, A4 paper, or A0 paper size based on the printer you wish to use. If you are in the US or Canada then your printer will likely use US letter paper. Other regions normally use A4 paper. Some people prefer to print their patterns at a print shop: A0 is best in this case.
Print at 100%.
On the second page, you will find a 1-inch and a 3-inch square test box. Print this page first, on its own, and measure these squares.
Once you are happy that the test box is accurate, print the rest of the pattern pages.
Please follow this video for information and assistance on assembling this pattern.
Also, please note that some Rebecca Page patterns and projects also come with cut files and a printable design page which you can use to plan your project if you wish. These are provided in a separate section below to avoid any confusion!

File Types
We have included three to four file types for you to choose from. Please choose whichever you are more familiar with or works best with your cutting machine. For cut files of the smaller pieces for some of our patterns, like the Dolls House Quiet Book and Add-on, we do not include a PDF copy. All versions come with .SVG, .PNG, and .DXF.
You will start by downloading the files from your account. Open your software and choose the file type you’d like to work with.
Pattern Cut Files
When working with cut files to cut small pattern pieces, it is imperative that you make sure the file is the correct size prior to cutting. We have included a one-inch square box offset in each file. You should be able to move the square off to the side, so it isn’t cut with the rest of your file. For files that also have square pieces, please be sure to compare them to the cut chart in the original file instructions. We’d always prefer you double check than have something cut out that isn’t useable!
Other Cut Files
For all other cut files, you should resize to your project needs. Please do keep in mind the size of some of the features. Going very small may make it difficult to cut smaller fonts or finer details.
Media
As mentioned earlier, it is very important to choose the correct media to for your cut. There is a huge selection to choose from and it can be overwhelming. Be sure to use the materials suggested by your machine for the type of project you are completing.

Sewing –
1 . NumbersSeam Allowance
½ inch seam allowance included (¼ then ¼ for French seams) – Top stitching ⅛ inch – Basting ¼ inch
1.1Draw around/trace all the numbers (1-24) onto the wrong side of your fabric/iron on adhesive.
OPTIONAL IRON ON ADHESIVE: Iron on adhesive to the wrong side of your fabric, using the manufacturer’s instructions.
NOTE – These need to be traced the mirror image (wrong way around).
1.2Cut out each number.
1.3OPTIONAL IRON ON ADHESIVE: Lay a Front Stocking right side facing up. Remove backing from number and place as desired, right side facing up. Press.
NO ADHESIVE: Lay a Front Stocking right side facing up. Place a number as desired, right side facing up. Pin.
1.4Topstitch around all outside edges of each number to secure in place.
NOTE – If you have used iron on adhesive you do not need to topstitch in place, however, it makes it more secure.
Repeat steps 1.3 to 1.4 for the remaining 23 Stocking numbers.
2 . Hanging Loop2.1Fold a Hanging Loop in half lengthways, right sides together. Pin.
2.2Stitch one short end, and the long edge, Using a ½ inch seam allowance.
2.3Clip the corners to reduce bulk.
2.4Turn the Hanging Loop right sides out and push out the corners. Press.
TIP – Push out the corners with a blunt object, like a chopstick, so that there are crisp, sharp edges and corners.
2.5Place a piece of hook tape in the center of the short sewn edge of the Hanging Loop. Pin.
2.6Topstitch in place using a ⅛ seam allowance.
OPTIONAL: Topstitch around both long edges and the short sewn edge, using a ⅛ inch seam allowance.
2.7Repeat steps 2.1 to 2.6 with a second Hanging Loop, stitching the loop tape to the second piece.
2.8Lay the Front Stocking right side up. Place the Hanging Loop onto the Stocking, right sides together, matching short raw edges, 1.5 inches from the side straight edge. Pin.
NOTE – The side of the Hanging Loop with the hook and loop tape needs to be facing up.
2.9Baste using a ¼ inch seam allowance.
TIP – Basting is just like normal stitching except the stitches need to be long and loose so that they can be removed later, if needed. Stitch within the seam allowance, so that the basting stitches are not seen in the final garment, while keeping the stitches loose enough to pull out just in case they are visible. The purpose is to hold a piece of fabric in place until that section is properly sewn. Set the machine to a long loose stitch. Test it on a piece of fabric first to make sure that the stitches can easily be removed. Do not backstitch at either end. Leave the ends loose, with approximately 1 inch of thread tails at either end of the stitching.
2.10Repeat steps 2.8 to 2.9 to attach the second Hanging Loop to the wrong side of the Back Stocking.
NOTE – The side of the Hanging Loop with the hook and loop tape needs to be facing up.
Repeat steps 2.1 to 2.10 for the remaining 23 Stockings.
3 . Stocking3.0SERGER / OVERLOCKER OPTION – Place the Front and Back Stocking pieces right sides together. Pin the outside curved edges. Serge using a ½ inch seam allowance. Then follow steps 3.6 to 3.11.
REGULAR SEWING MACHINE OPTION – We will be using a French seam to enclose all raw edges and have beautiful finishing on the inside of the Stockings. If you have never done a French seam, don’t worry, we’ll have all the steps included here.
3.1Place the Front and Back Stocking pieces wrong sides together (right sides out). Pin the outside curved edges.
NOTE – Do not pin the top opening.
3.2Stitch using a ¼ inch seam allowance.
NOTE – Do not stitch along the straight top edge.
3.3Trim the seam allowance approximately in half.
TIP – Trimming makes it possible to hide all the threads and raw edges when the seam is encased in the next step. Trim the seam allowance in half to make sure absolutely nothing is sticking out. However, just neatening up the edge here will also suffice.
3.4Turn wrong side out and press from the other side as flat as possible. Make sure that the seam line is at the exact center of the fold.
TIP – For some fabrics, you will find it easier to first press the seam to one side, then turn the fabric wrong side out and press it so the seam is in the middle. It gives a little more control and helps ensure the fold is nice and crisp.
3.5Pin and stitch again approximately ¼ inch from the edge.
This will encase the raw edges, so they are not seen (a French seam).
3.6Turn right sides out and press.
3.7Turn the Stocking inside out. Fold the top straight edge of the Stocking ½ inch over the wrong side. Press.
3.8Fold over again by ½ inch, enclosing the raw edges.
3.9Press the Hanging Loops up, away from the body of the Stocking.
3.10Topstitch all the way around the straight top edge, using a ⅛ inch seam allowance.
NOTE – Check that your Hanging Loops are up and out of the way. You will need to stitch these in place while stitching the top edge of the Stocking.
3.11Fold the Hanging Loops together, connecting the hook and loop tape.
Repeat steps 3.1 to 3.11 for the remaining 23 Stockings.
4 . Assembling the Calendar4.0NOTE – Do not cut the cord/trim to the desired length. Follow the steps below and cut the ends once fully assembled. It is difficult to get it accurate if you cut beforehand as you have to twist it around each dowel exactly the same, otherwise it will affect the angle of the bottom dowel.
TIP – If you would prefer an alternative hanging option such as bunting or hanging on a tree, skip this step and attach each Stocking to your hanging choice.
4.1Find the center of the cord/trim.
4.2Measure 15 inches from the center. Measure 1 inch away from the end of the dowel. At this measurement wrap the cord/trim around one side of the dowel once.
4.3Glue the cord/trim in place.
4.4Repeat steps 4.1 to 4.3 attaching the piece of cord/trim to the other side of the dowel.
4.5Measure 13 inches from the first dowel on either side.
Repeat steps 4.1 to 4.4 to attach the cord/trim to the second dowel.
Repeat this step until you have the cord/trim attached to all five dowels, keeping them 13 inches apart.
Trim the cord/trim at the bottom on either side to 2 inches.
TIP – Tie a knot at each end of your cord/trim if it is prone to fraying.
4.6Attach the Stockings to the dowels in number order, by looping the Hanging Loops over the dowels and closing them together. You should have five Stockings per dowel, except the last one which will have four.
4.7Your Stocking Advent Calendar is finished. Fill and enjoy!
