Description
This zip ornament sewing pattern is perfect for holding small gifts, everyday items, or as a reusable Christmas cracker. It comes in three sizes, is fully reversible and has a zip closure.

- +Preparation
- Interfacing – Recommend light to midweight interfacing. You will need approximately ¼ yard for all sizes
- 1x Zipper – The zippers may need to be trimmed to the zipper length. Minimum zipper lengths needed are:
- Small: 4.5 inches
- Medium: 6 inches
- Large: 7.5 inches
- OPTIONAL Ornament hanger – an 8-inch piece of ribbon
- OPTIONAL – 1x ½ inch Swivel Clasp hardware OR – 1x Key Ring

Wash, dry, and press your fabric before starting your project. A bit of prep now prevents shrinking and means your garment will stay the same size you made it.
Never leave a child or baby unattended or allow to sleep in a garment made from one of our patterns with ties, snaps, buttons, or anything they could remove, choke on, or get caught on. Always use caution if you are unsure. We love our patterns, but we love your bundles of joy more!

Tools needed are a sewing machine, zipper foot, optional fray check, optional washaway tape, iron, pins/clips, tailors chalk or disappearing ink pen, scissors, tape measure, and a ruler.
Printing Your PatternSettings
The pattern is a separate download. Choose either the US letter paper, A4 paper, or A0 paper size based on the printer you wish to use. If you are in the US or Canada then your printer will likely use US letter paper. Other regions normally use A4 paper. Some people prefer to print their patterns at a print shop: A0 is best in this case.
Print at 100%.
On the second page, you will find a 1-inch and a 3-inch square test box. Print this page first, on its own, and measure these squares.
Once you are happy that the test box is accurate, print the rest of the pattern pages.

Pattern S – L 2 – 3 Cutting InstructionsCut each of the pieces according to the directions on the pattern piece. Seam allowances are all included so just cut them as is.

- INTERFACING – Add interfacing onto all Circle and Half Circle Main and Lining pieces.
- ZIPPER – Layer Half Circle Lining and Zipper both right sides facing up, put Main with right side laying down, pin. Stitch with a zipper foot. Flip Main Half Circle over Zipper. Repeat for other side of Zipper Tape. Baste around the circle, trim excess Zipper Tape.
- RING TAB – Make double fold bias tape. Topstitch both long edges, then baste the Ring Tab in place.
- CIRCLE – Match Circle Main and Half Circle Main, right sides together, then put Circle Lining and Half Circle Lining right sides together. Stitch around, leave an opening for turning. Trim seam allowance.
- FINISH – Turn Zip Ornament right side out. Use a ladder stitch to close the gap in the main and lining. Press. Add optional ornament hanger ribbon.

0.1Interfacing
Using the manufacturer’s instructions, apply the iron-on interfacing to all the Circle and Half Circle Main and Lining pieces.
1 . Zipper1.1Lay the Half Circle Lining right side facing up. Place the zipper right side facing up, in the center on top of the Lining. Align the top raw edge of the Half Circle Lining with the zipper tape.
Pin in place.
TIP – To help prevent the zipper from shifting or the fabric from distorting while sewing, apply washaway sewing tape to secure the zipper.
1.2Place the Main Half Circle right side facing down on top of the zipper, lining up the top raw edge with the zipper tape.
Pin in place.
The pieces will now be layered in this order: Lining facing up, zipper facing up, Main facing down.
1.3Using a zipper foot on the sewing machine, stitch using ¼ inch seam allowance.
1.4Flip the Main Half Circle over the zipper, so the wrong sides of the Main and Lining are together. Press.
OPTIONAL – Topstitch along the zipper tape, ⅛ inch from the fabric edge.
1.5Repeat steps 1.1 to 1.4 with the second Half Circle Lining and Main Half Circle pieces on the other side of the zipper.
1.6Baste around the outside of circle, using ¼ inch seam allowance.
NOTE – Check that the zipper pull is not hanging off the edge of the circle.
TIP – Basting is just like normal stitching except the stitches need to be long and loose so that they can be removed later, if needed. Stitch within the seam allowance, so that the basting stitches are not seen in the final garment, while keeping the stitches loose enough to pull out just in case they are visible. The purpose is to hold a piece of fabric in place until that section is properly sewn. Set the machine to a long loose stitch. Test it on a piece of fabric first to make sure that the stitches can easily be removed. Do not backstitch at either end. Leave the ends loose, with approximately 1 inch of thread tails at either end of the stitching.
1.7Trim off the excess zipper tape.
2 . Ring Tab2.1If you are familiar with making double fold bias tape, please use this. If not, don’t worry, just follow along here!
Fold the Ring Tab in half lengthwise, wrong sides together. Press.
TIP – Do not use a thick fabric for the Ring Tab as it can be tricky to stitch and attach to the zipper.
2.2Open the Ring Tab then fold the two long sides into the middle and press.
2.3Refold the Ring Tab along the center edge, folding the raw edges to the inside.
2.4Topstitch ⅛ inch from each long edge.
2.5Slide the Ring Tab through the Key Ring or Swivel Clasp. Fold in half and pin.
2.6Aligning the raw edges, match the Ring Tab along the top of the zipper tape and pin in place.
NOTE – You are attaching it to the zipper pull side of the zipper.
2.7Baste using ¼ inch seam allowance.
3 . Circle3.1Take your finished main Half Circle piece and lay the main Circle piece on top, right sides together. Pin.
3.2Turn the ornament over and place the Circle lining on top of the Half Circle lining, right sides together. Pin.
The pieces will now be layered in this order: main Circle, completed main and lining Half Circle, Circle lining.
3.3Stitch around the circle, using a ½ inch seam allowance. Leave a 2-inch gap for turning.
3.4Trim the seam allowance all the way around to help reduce bulk.
4 . Finish4.1Turn the Zip Ornament right side out, pulling the main Circle through the gap from step 3.3.
4.2Use a slipstitch (also called a ‘ladder stitch’) to close the gap left in step 4.1 on the main and lining.
Thread the needle, tying the thread tail ends together in a knot. This will provide added strength to the finished seam. Push the needle up through one of the folded seams, from the inside of the lining to the outside, pulling the thread tail completely through.
The knotted end will now be nicely concealed within the seam on the inside.
4.3Directly across from the starting point, push the needle down and then back up through the fold on the opposite seam to create a stitch that is between ⅛ – ¼ inch long. When the thread is pulled through, the stitch is concealed within the seam crease, and there will be a horizontal stitch connecting the left and right sides of the opening.
NOTE – The stitches have been left loose in this picture to show what the ladder stitch looks like. Pull the thread through and taut after each stitch.
4.4Repeat steps 4.2 to 4.3 to the end of the opening. To tighten the stitches, gently pull the thread. This will conceal the stitches in between the seams.
To end, create a loop for your needle to pass through by picking up a tiny section of the opposite seam and passing the needle through the loop. Tighten to form a knot. Reinforce the stitching as needed by repeating this step.
Poke the needle back into the fabric next to the stitching and pull it all the way through to the other side.
Pull the thread taut and snip it close to the fabric. Allow the thread tail to slip back inside the Ornament so that the tail is now hidden inside.
4.5Give the Zip Ornament another good press.
OPTIONAL: If adding an ornament hanger, tie this through the Key Ring/Swivel Clasp now.
