- Sizing – Sizing is different in different countries & stores, so please measure your model before picking your size. The ready-to-wear size your model normally fits into may be different from our size chart.
- Picking your size – When picking your size, if you fall between sizes, go for the size with the correct chest measurement. That way the shoulders, arms, and upper back are likely to fit well. Then, grade out or into the correct waist size.
- Height adjustment – This pattern is designed for a height of 5 foot 6 inches. If your height is above or below 5 foot 6, use this tutorial as a guide for making height adjustments to your bodice and sleeve.
- Bust adjustment –
- The Women’s Regular pattern is designed for a sewing C cup (approximately, a ready-to-wear B cup). If your bust size is above a D cup, you may need to do an FBA (full bust adjustment). Follow our free tutorial to make this adjustment to your pattern pieces. Given it is designed for knit/stretch fabrics and it has a large, draped look, the sizing will be quite forgiving. Cup sizes A to D should fit well in it. However, if you have over a D cup, you may need to do an FBA (full bust adjustment). There are several great tutorials online how to do this with knit. Our favorite ones are pinned in the link below.
- The Women’s Curvy pattern is designed for a sewing E cup (approximately, a ready-to-wear D cup). If your bust size is above a F cup, you may need to do an FBA (full bust adjustment). Follow our free tutorial to make this adjustment to your pattern pieces.
- Sleeve length – There are two sleeve options (short, and ¾ sleeve). The short sleeve option is designed to sit at the elbow due to the dolman design of the top. The ¾ length sleeve sits mid-way down the forearm.
- Muslin – To ensure you get the best fit, sew a muslin to check the fit. A muslin is a test version of the pattern in an inexpensive fabric.
- Use an inexpensive knit fabric similar in weight to the final fabric you plan to use.
- Cut out the Front and Back. Label each piece with tailors chalk / fabric pen so you know what each piece is.
- Baste these together using a ⅜ inch seam allowance
- Try on. If you are happy with the fit, continue to your final garment.
- If you feel the fit needs adjusting for your personal shape, turn the muslin inside out and try on again. Adjust the seams with pins until you are happy.
- Trim your new seam allowances to ⅜ inch and pull out your basting stitches.
- Use these bits of fabric as your pattern pieces instead of the original pattern pieces. Continue to sew your final garment.
- Make sure to keep your adjusted pattern pieces in case you wish to make more!
- To check this, hold a piece of your fabric up to a ruler, pull it along the stretch and see if it stretches at least 1.5 times its length).
- 1x – 4x Zipper – See the zipper chart in the cutting charts for recommended zipper length. Any type of zipper can be used, such as a plastic, metal, separating, and non-separating, although we do not recommend using an invisible zipper.
- NOTE – If you adding ruching to any of the seams, the lengths needed for the zippers will change.
- OPTIONAL Wonder tape
- Thread to match
- Use a ball point needle of a size appropriate to your fabric when working with knits – The ball point needle has a slightly rounded tip and will prevent from damaging the fibre. Use ball point pins or clips and, if you can’t, use regular pins into the seam allowance and you should be just fine.
- Use a stretch stitch – You can use either a short and narrow zigzag or a stretch stitch (lightning bolt stitch) for construction. Test on a scrap of fabric to find which stitch and tension settings work best for you. You don’t want the fabric to pucker under your stitches.
- Your machine might have many fancy stretch stitches and you are welcome to play with them, but often the basic zigzag or stretch stitch are just right.
- Use a walking foot – Using a walking-foot is not a necessity but it is highly recommended when working on a stretchy knit. The walking-foot helps to prevent one layer of fabric from stretching out while sewing. Both layers of fabrics are fed at the same time under your needle.
- Reduce your presser foot tension – Some machines will allow you to change your presser foot tension. Check your manual to see how to reduce your presser foot tension. Reducing tension will prevent your fabric from stretching while it goes through the machine.
- Use a ball point twin-needle (double needle) for top stitching – Using a twin-needle will give you a regular double line of straight stitches on the right side and a short and stretchy zigzag on the wrong side. Alternately, if you don’t own a twin needle, you can use a medium size zigzag stitch for hemming and topstitching. I like to lengthen my stitch a little when top stitching with the twin needle. Test on a scrap of fabric to find what works best for you.
- Finishing the seams – Because knits don’t fray, it isn’t strictly necessary to finish your seams. That being said, you will achieve a more polished and durable look if you do an overcasting or zigzag stitch on your raw edges.

The Zipper Top & Dress is extremely wide. The finished garment chest measurement is roughly twice your chest measurement. This is correct, and the result is what gives the garment its drape.
If you get stuck with fitting, see our favorite resources on our Pinterest Sewing Fitting Advice board.
Materials and ToolsMaterials & Tools
You will need a stretch / knit fabric with a 50% stretch. Best results will be achieved with a fabric with drape. The more drape, the more flowing & relaxed your top will look, for example a cotton lycra 5% will fit, but it won’t drape and flow under the arms where the excess fabric sits. A great choice is lightweight knit such as rayon, viscose, bamboo, ITY jersey, cotton jersey as they will drape and flow in a much more relaxed way. The less drape, the more structured your top will look like French terry, hacci sweater knit, interlock, ponte.
* Do not use a woven fabric.

Printing Your PatternSettings
The pattern is a separate download. Choose either the US letter paper, A4 paper, or A0 paper size based on the printer you wish to use. If you are in the US or Canada then your printer will likely use US letter paper. Other regions normally use A4 paper. Some people prefer to print their patterns at a print shop: A0 is best in this case.
Print at 100%.
On the second page, you will find a 1-inch and a 3-inch square test box. Print this page first, on its own, and measure these squares.
Once you are happy that the test box is accurate, print the rest of the pattern pages.
Please follow this video for information and assistance on assembling this pattern.
Also, please note that some Rebecca Page patterns and projects also come with cut files and a printable design page which you can use to plan your project if you wish. These are provided in a separate section below to avoid any confusion!

The raw edges (e.g. the ones you could pick at, and threads would come off) will be at a right angle to your fold.
Fabric TipsTips for Sewing with Knit Fabrics
Using a serger is not a necessity to sew with knit fabrics! Here are a few tips to get the best results on a regular sewing machine:
- + Instructions
- PATTERN MARKINGS – Transfer all pattern markings.
- CENTER FRONT, CENTER BACK, AND SHOULDERS – Place Front pieces right side together, aligning along center front seam. Pin and stitch. If adding a zipper to center front seam, skip to Back pieces. Place Back pieces right side together, aligning along center back seam. Pin and stitch. If adding a zipper to center front seam, skip to Shoulder seams. Place Front and Back pieces right side together, aligning the shoulder seams. Pin and stitch. If adding a zipper to center front seam, skip to step 2.
- SIDE SEAMS – Place the Front and Back pieces right sides together. Pin side seams. Stitch. Repeat for second side seam.
- OPTIONAL V-NECK NECKBANDS – NO ZIPPERS: Place the short ends of right sides together. Pin and stitch. Repeat to attach the two Front Neckband pieces along either side of the Back Neckband pieces aligning the short straight edges. Pin. Stitch. Press. Fold the Neckband in half lengthwise, right sides together. Fold the Neckband in half again widthwise, matching the short edges. Pin all four layers. Stitch. Open up and fold along seamline, wrong sides together. Press seam. Starting at the V, baste 2 inches up one side, then 2 inches up the other side. Find and mark center of back neckline on bodice and Neckband. Baste 2 inches up one side, then 2 inches up the other side. Snip into the v. Place Neckband onto neck of bodice, right sides together, matching center backs and center front to the V. Pin, stretching Neckband slightly to fit. Start at center back to center front, stitch. Turn bodice and stitch from center front to center back on other side. Press seam. OPTIONAL Topstitch. ZIPPERS: Lay out four Neckband pieces. On the seams you are adding zippers, do not stitch the Neckband pieces together. Place two Neckband pieces together, matching the short, straight ends. Pin. Stitch. Repeat to attach the remaining pieces together. Press. Starting at the right front of the bodice, align the raw edges of the Neckband with the raw edges of the neckline. Pin. Stitch. Press seam. OPTIONAL Topstitch.
- OPTIONAL SCOOP TOP NECK FINISH – OPTIONAL serge/zigzag stitch the top edge of the neckline. Turn the top edge of the bodice over once ⅜ inch. Press. Pin. Topstitch.
- RUCHING – Ruching can be added to any seam. If you are adding ruching, decide how much you would like to shorten your top or dress. I.e. to shorten by 4 inches, use 4 inches of elastic and stretch 8 inches of the seam. Mark the length you want to shorten your top or dress along the edge of the seam on both the Front and Back. Add an inch to the length you have calculated for your elastic. Mark ½ inch from each end of elastic. Match top markings on wrong side of the Back slightly outside the ⅜ inch seam allowance. Pin. Gently pull elastic and match bottom markings. Pin. Stitch a few stitches from the top pin using a straight stitch. Pull the bottom pin and elastic, stretching the elastic so the fabric lays flat. Continue stitching until you reach the bottom pin. Trim elastic. Stitch and gather each Front seam to match the Back seams. Baste. Stitch. Repeat for each seam you are ruching.
- HEM – OPTIONAL finish raw edge of Sleeve. Fold Sleeve hem ½ inch to the wrong side. Pin. Topstitch. Repeat for second Sleeve. Finish raw edge. Fold hem ½ inch to wrong side. Press. Topstitch.
- ZIPPERS – Lay the zipper and top or dress right sides facing, line the zipper teeth up with the top of the bodice, pin, stitch. Repeat on other side. Open zipper, flip seam allowance open so it lays flat. Fold the zipper into the seam allowance. Pin and stitch. Repeat on other side of the seam. OPTIONAL Topstitch. Fold the zipper tape ends to the wrong side. Pin. Stitch a bar tack. Repeat for any other seams you are adding zippers to.

0.0NOTE – The pictures used in the instructions are from a different pattern, however, the techniques are the same.
0.1Pattern Markings
Transfer all pattern markings to the fabric using a disappearing ink pen or tailors chalk. 1 . Center Front, Center Back, and Shoulders1.0A zipper can be added to any of the following seams, the Front at the center front seam, the Back at the center back seam, and along both shoulder seams. The zippers will not be added until step 7. If you are adding a zipper to a seam, you will not stitch the seam in this step.
If you are NOT adding a zipper, follow steps 1.1 to 1.2 to stitch the center front seam, steps 1.3 to stitch the center back seam, and steps 1.4 to 1.5 to stitch the shoulder seams.
If you are adding a zipper, pay attention to the NOTE within each step which will direct you to skip seams appropriately where you will add a zipper in step 7.
1.1Place the Front pieces right sides together and align along the front seam. Pin.
NOTE – If you are adding a zipper to the center front seam, skip to step 1.3.
1.2Serge or stitch using a ⅜ inch seam allowance and a stretch stitch.
1.3Repeat steps 1.1 to 1.2 for the Back Bodice pieces, aligning them along the back seam.
NOTE – If you are adding a zipper to the center back seam, skip to step 1.4.
1.4Place the Front and Back right sides together at the shoulders. Pin.
NOTE – If you are adding a zipper to the shoulder seams, skip to step 2.
1.5Serge or stitch using a ⅜ inch seam allowance.
TIP – If your fabric is very stretchy or has less recovery, you might want to use a clear elastic to stabilize the shoulder seams to prevent them from stretching out overtime with wear. To install the elastic leave excess on either ends of the seam, you can cut the excess later. Pin the elastic without stretching it and incorporate it to the shoulder seam.
2 . Side Seams2.0SERGER / OVERLOCKER OPTION – Place the Front and Back right sides together and pin along under arm seams. Serge along both underarm seams using a ⅜ inch seam allowance. Repeat for the other side seam.
REGULAR SEWING MACHINE OPTION – Follow instructions below.
NOTE – A zipper should not be added to the side seams.
2.1Place the Front and Back Bodices right sides together, matching the side underarm seams. Pin.
2.2Serge or stitch using a ⅜ inch seam allowance.
2.3Repeat steps 2.1 to 2.2 for the other side.
If you are doing a V-Neck, continue below.
If you are doing a Scoop Neck, skip to step 4.
3 . OPTIONAL V-Neck Neckbands3.0The V-Neck Neckband has four pieces. You will stitch the neckband pieces together except at the seams that align with the bodice seams you have left unsewn for insertion of zippers in step 8.
If you are adding zippers, skip to step 3.17.
If you are not adding zippers, continue below.
If you are doing a Scoop Neck, skip to step 4.
3.1If you are NOT adding zippers:
Place the short ends of the two Back Neckband pieces right sides together. Pin.
3.2Repeat to attach the two Front Neckband pieces on either side of the Back Neckband pieces along the short, straight edges.
3.3Press the seam allowances open if you are using a stretch stitch. Press the seam allowance to one side if you have serger. This will allow your Neckband to lay flat.
3.4Fold the Neckband in half lengthwise right sides together matching the shaped ends of the Front Neckband pieces.
3.5Fold the Neckband again widthwise, matching short edges. Pin all four layers together.
3.6Serge or stitch using ¼ inch seam allowance.
3.7Open up the Neckband and fold along the seamline, wrong sides together. You should now see a V-shape at the center front.
3.8Press the seam flat.
3.9Starting at the V, baste 2 inches up one side, then 2 inches up the other side of the V-shape, using a ¼ inch seam allowance.
TIP – Basting is just like normal stitching except the stitches need to be long and loose so that they can be removed later, if needed. Stitch within the seam allowance, so that the basting stitches are not seen in the final garment, while keeping the stitches loose enough to pull out just in case they are visible. The purpose is to hold a piece of fabric in place until that section is properly sewn. Set the machine to a long loose stitch. Test it on a piece of fabric first to make sure that the stitches can easily be removed. Do not backstitch at either end. Leave the ends loose, with approximately 1 inch of thread tails at either end of the stitching.
3.10Find the midpoint of the Back neckline by folding it half. Pin.
Baste 2 inches up each side of the v shape of the front neckline using a ¼ inch seam allowance.
Carefully snip the point of the V-neck almost up to the stitching line taking care not to snip into the stitches.
3.11Find and mark the center back (opposite to the V) of the Neckband.
3.12Place the Neckband onto the neck of the bodice, right sides together, matching center backs and center front to the V. Pin.
Continue pinning, easing the Neckband onto the neckline.
NOTE – Stretch the Neckband slightly to fit. Do not stretch the bodice.
TIP – If you are serging, baste together using a ⅛ inch seam allowance.
3.13Start at the center back to the center front, serge or stitch using a ⅜ seam allowance.
Turn your bodice and serge / stitch from the center front to the center back on the other side.
3.14If using a serger, here are two methods to finish the thread tails.
METHOD 1 – Use a wide eye needle to thread the tails back through the stitches.
METHOD 2 – Pull the threads back over the seam and stitch a few zigzag stitches over the seam allowance, securing the tails in place.
3.15Press the seam.
3.16OPTIONAL – From the right side, topstitch around the neckline with a twin needle, coverstitch or stretch stitch.
If you are adding ruching, skip to step 5.
If you are not adding ruching, skip to step 6 to hem.
3.17If you are ADDING zippers:
Lay out the four Neckband pieces. You will have two Front Neckband and two Back Neckband pieces. On the seams you have decided to add zippers, you will not stitch the Neckband pieces together.
For the first seam that needs to be stitched together, place the short, straight ends of two Neckband pieces right sides together. Pin.
3.18Stitch using a ⅜ inch seam allowance and a stretch stitch.
Repeat steps 3.16 to 3.17 to attach the remaining Neckband pieces together.
3.19Press the seam allowance open if you are using a stretch stitch. Press the seam allowance to one side if you have serger. This will allow your Neckband to lay flat.
3.20Fold the Neckband in half lengthwise, with the wrong sides together and press.
3.21Starting at the right front of the bodice, align the raw edges of the Neckband with the raw edges of the neckline of the bodice. Pin.
Repeat for each section of the Neckband.
3.22Serge or stitch using a ⅜ inch seam allowance.
NOTE – The Neckband will not be sewn in a continuous round as pictured, it will be sewn in sections depending on where you have planned to insert the zippers.
TIP – To prevent waviness, stretch only the Neckband and not the neckline.
TIP – It is easier to stitch with the Neckband on top.
3.23If using a serger, here are two methods to finish the thread tails.
METHOD 1 – Use a wide eye needle to thread the tails back through the stitches.
METHOD 2 – Pull the threads back over the seam and stitch a few zigzag stitches over the seam allowance, securing the tails in place.
3.24Press the seam.
3.25OPTIONAL – From the right side, topstitch around the neckline with a twin needle, coverstitch or stretch stitch.
If you are adding ruching, skip to step5.
If you are not adding ruching, skip to step 6 to hem.
4 . OPTIONAL Scoop Top Neck Finish4.1OPTIONAL – Serge/zigzag stitch top edge of the neckline to finish the raw edges.
4.2Turn the top edge of the bodice over once ⅜ inch all the way around the neckline and press. Pin.
4.3Topstitch around the neckline with a twin needle, coverstitch or stretch stitch.
If you are adding ruching, follow below.
If you are not adding ruching, skip to step 6 to hem.
5 . Ruching5.0Ruching can be a added to any seam. If you are adding ruching, you will need to first decide how much you would like to shorten your top or dress with the ruching. For example, if you would like to shorten your top or dress by 4 inches, you will use 4 inches of elastic and stretch it over 8 inches of the seam. This will reduce the length by 4 inches.
Mark the length you want to shorten your top or dress or sleeve along the edge of the seam where you will be adding the ruching. Make sure to mark both the Front and Back pattern pieces. Add an inch to the length you have calculated for your elastic. Mark a half inch from each end of the elastic. This will allow you to have something to hold onto as you are stitching the elastic.
NOTE – The ruching will impact the length of zipper you used. The length of zipper provided is NOT for ruching.
5.1Double check that you have marked a ½ inch from each end of the elastic. Match the marking at the top of the elastic to the top marking on the wrong side of the Back. Place the elastic slightly outside of the ⅜ inch seam allowance. Pin at the marking.
TIP – Pre-stretch the elastic a few times before pinning it.
5.2Gently pull the elastic and match the bottom marking on the elastic to the bottom marking on the Back. Pin.
NOTE – There should be a ½ inch of elastic above the top pin and below the bottom pin.
5.3Stitch a few stitches from the top pin using a straight stitch, backstitching to lock in the stitches.
NOTE – Do not pull the fabric taut yet, let it remain bunched up.
Pull the bottom pin and elastic, stretching the elastic so the fabric lays flat.
Continue stitching down the elastic until you reach the bottom pin. Backstitch a couple stitches to lock in the stitches and secure the elastic in place.
5.4Trim the bottom of the elastic.
Repeat steps 5.1 to 5.4 for the Front piece.
Repeat for each seam you are ruching.
6 . Hem6.1OPTIONAL – Before hemming, serge or zigzag stitch the bottom raw edge. Do not remove any seam allowance, just serge to finish.
6.2Fold the hem of the armhole under ½ inch and press.
6.3From the right side topstitch the hem with a twin needle or a zigzag stitch.
Repeat for second Sleeve.
6.4Serge or zigzag stitch the bottom raw edge. Do not remove any seam allowance, just serge to finish.
6.5Fold the hem ½ inch to the wrong side. Press. Pin.
6.6Topstitch ⅜ inch from the fold, using a medium size zigzag or a stretch stitch.
TIP – Or you can use a coverstitch or twin needle for hemming.
7 . Zippers7.0SERGER / OVERLOCKER OPTION – If you are using a serger, serge along the bottom of your top or dress. Do not remove any seam allowance, just serge to finish. Then continue with step 7.1.
REGULAR SEWING MACHINE OPTION – Follow along below.
7.1Unzip the zipper and place it teeth face down onto your ironing board.
When the zipper is closed the teeth of the zipper will curl upwards. By ironing the teeth, it will help them lie flatter, which will make it easier to sew.
I find the best way to do this is to use my fingers to press the teeth gently towards the center. Butt the iron up against the teeth gliding the iron along the zipper. The zipper will look a little odd, but the teeth should lay flat.
NOTE – Use a warm dry (no steam) iron. Be careful not to iron directly on top of the teeth as it can damage or melt them. The goal is just to flatten the zipper a little to make it easier to attach.
7.2With wrong sides facing up, press a ⅜ inch seam allowance from the top of your bodice.
Repeat for the other side of the top or dress.
7.3Lay the top or dress right sides facing up. Unfold the seam allowance on the seam you are attaching the zipper to. With the right zipper tape on the left side of the top or dress, right sides together (zipper teeth facing in towards your bodice), line the zipper teeth up with the top edge of the bodice. Pin in place.
TIP – Take a moment here to check you’ve got the correct side of the zip on the correct side of the top or dress, and that they are facing right sides together.
TIP – Add Wonder Under Tape to the zipper instead of using pins. This will help hold it in place.
Shorten the zipper, if necessary, to match the recommended zipper length. To do this, stitch a stationary bar tack several times over the zipper to stop it from opening below this point. Then cut the remaining zipper off.
NOTE – If you have added ruching, your zipper length will be different than the recommended zipper length.
TIP – A stationary bar tack is a wide stitch that does not go anywhere. You stitch from side to side, not moving forward. You can do this by hand, or set your machine to 0 stitch length, and a stitch width that reaches from one side of the zipper to the other.
7.4Using a regular zipper foot, stitch the zipper to the dress, as close to the zipper teeth as you can. Stitch from the top of the zipper as close to the zipper pull as you can.
7.5Close the zipper. You will then be able to check that your stitches are correct, and the zipper can close easily.
7.6Open the zipper. Repeat steps 7.3 – 7.4 with the left zipper tape on the right side of the top or dress.
It may feel awkward but do still stitch from the top of the top or dress downwards. That way the zipper won’t slip or move and will be aligned correctly.
NOTE – An invisible zipper is pictured. We do not recommend that you use an invisible zipper.
TIP – Check that you can close the zipper properly before moving onto the next step.
7.7OPTIONAL – Topstitch along the zipper tape stitching ¼ inch from the raw edge.
7.8Fold the zipper tape ends to the wrong side. Stitch a stationary bar tack several times to keep the zipper tape end in place.
Repeat for any other seams you are adding zippers to.

- To check this, hold a piece of your fabric up to a ruler, pull it along the stretch and see if it stretches at least 1.5 times its length).
* Do not use a woven fabric.
